To be horrified.

DD2 has just informed me that the chlorine smell at the pool is in fact pee. Is it really true?

Igotthemheavyboobs · 26/07/2020 21:22

Ah whatever it is, it's a bloody lovely smell

jimmyhill · 26/07/2020 21:24

No. It isn't

Lockheart · 26/07/2020 21:25

Does Google not work where you live?

EveningNibble · 26/07/2020 21:26

Nottherealslimshady · 26/07/2020 21:26

It's the smell of reacted chlorine isn't it, so once its reacted with urine that's the smell you smell I think

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 26/07/2020 21:29

It's not urine directly that you smell, it's what you get from the reaction between chlorine and urine / sweat etc.

Starbuggy · 26/07/2020 21:30

Ah yes, that well known reliable scientific source TikTok Hmm

Bunnybigears · 26/07/2020 21:32

Do you know what smells of chlorine? Chlorine. Hope that helps.

shelikesemwithamoustache · 26/07/2020 21:45

The chlorine granules I add to our temporary pool before anyone has gone in it smell very much of chlorine. As does the water the following morning before anyone has gone in it.

SirGawain · 26/07/2020 21:57

You have been reading too many copy paste and pass on to all your friends on FaceBook.

Our local 25 metre pool holds 1,237 tons of water. You would need a lot of people peeing in it to make that smell.

darkwader · 26/07/2020 22:04

The Chlorine 'smell' that you associate with pools is Chloramines, which are indeed when sweat, pee and other Nitrogen based waste are combined with Chlorine.

People often think this is too much Chlorine in the pool, but standard practice is to add more chlorine to fully remove the Nitrogen compounds as gas.

A pool with lots of free chlorine doesn't smell.

FrostyGirl66 · 26/07/2020 22:28

when I fill my pool with fresh water and dissolve chlorine in it, why does it smell of a swimming pool then? pre-kid invasion so no urine or sweat.

hamandcheesesandwichplease · 26/07/2020 22:30

No, it's not. I've cleaned with chlorine (a long time ago), it smells of chlorine. I assure you I didn't pee in it.

Shizzlestix · 26/07/2020 22:44

My hot tub smells like chlorine when I tip in chlorine granules after using it. I promise you we don’t pee in it!

I used to swim in a hospital pool that used saline instead of chlorine, it was very odd!

IgiveupallthenamesIwantedareg0 · 26/07/2020 22:50

There is a well known story here where I live that Mums tell their kids when they go to the pool - there is something in the water that, if the kid pees, the water will change colour and leave a trail behind.

TimeWastingButFun · 26/07/2020 22:59

Why does it smell exactly like the chlorine tablets I use for our pool then? They haven't been peed on.

TheHighestSardine · 26/07/2020 23:14

It's a learning opportunity! Tell DD2 to show some initiative and research things rather than believing every piece of nonsense just because it's on the Internet.

Haha, yes i was told it was a green trail if you did a wee.
Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 27/07/2020 00:49

Seriously, tik tok? You're believing a tik tok? Ffs

TheNestedIf · 27/07/2020 01:42

I don't know about the smell but chlorine combined with urine is the reason your eyes and nose are sore and itchy after swimming in a pool where someone has been an unhygienic arsehole.

This is just one reason I don't swim any more.

This is what I was going to say; I use chlorine bleach in my white laundry, and it smells like a swimming pool. To my knowledge, no one has peed, sweat, or anything else in it.

lemoncarafe · 27/07/2020 07:04

We have a pool, use chlorine twice weekly. It does not smell of anything at all.

LioneIRichTea · 27/07/2020 07:06

Chlorine has a light smell anyway, however, if you mix it with urine or sweat it creates
chloramines which cause the strong smell and stop chlorine from being able to it’s job properly. Chlorine doesn’t just zap urine and sweat out of the water! This is why some pools ask you to shower before entering. Apparently some deodorants conflating chemicals that have a similar effect and I’m wondering how much sun cream also effects this... anyway if you smell a sharp chlorine smell it definitely has sweat, urine, deodorant and other nitrates in it - which means the chlorine isn’t working well, which means you could get sick.

FannyFungi · 27/07/2020 07:07

Our tap water sometimes smells of chlorine. Has someone been sweating in my taps?
