Would you be happy with the finding of this cake for £80

I ordered a graduation cake from a lady who I have used for years and all of the cakes have been beautiful which is why I've returned every time. However I picked up this yesterday and I'm a little disappointed in the size and finish compared to the picture I sent of how I would like it. I've messaged her to tell her I was a little disappointed with it but she hasn't replied so am I being unreasonable? She wasn't in when I picked it up she left it with her teen son to hand over so couldn't really say anything there and then.

I just sent her the picture and she gave me a price. I wasn't aware that it was buttercream on the picture, she didn't point that out or specify. Maybe it's partly my own fault but even so the proportions and colour and finish are still off.

It isn't great. The only things that come to my mind was that she had to rush it or that you areived before ot was properly finished.

MahaMoon · 26/07/2020 14:35

I think you should send her a link to this thread!

3cats · 26/07/2020 14:35

The cake in the picture has a smooth finish, so that is what I’d expect. I wouldn’t push it further though. Just take your business elsewhere. If she’d apologized and given a discount I would let it go, but she didn’t.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 26/07/2020 14:35

3 days to ice with butter icing. Grim. How on earth could it take that long. Where was the butter icing all that time?

You can get butter icing smooth. Even I can and I have very limited icing skills.

Staffy1 · 26/07/2020 14:36

Looks like something happened to it. Was it dropped and patched up? Even looks like one of the flower decorations is missing. That's poor. I would send her pictures of it asking if that's how it looked when she last saw it.

Dogsaresomucheasier · 26/07/2020 14:36

The last handicraft person I complained to was initially hurt and defensive, then apologised and sent a refund. I think it feels quite hurtful and personal when you’ve handmade something. Give it a day or so before leaving a review.

Tappering · 26/07/2020 14:37

Bollocks - she's having you on. There's no reason why she couldn't get the frosting smoother than that. The letters on the board don't look as if they have been mold cut either - they are different sizes and thicknesses and look really amateur.

The whole thing looks very DIY and for £80 I'd be fucking raging. I suspect she's run out of time - or has given it to someone else to finish - and she's trying to front it out now.

stickygotstuck · 26/07/2020 14:37

Obvioulsy in the minority here, but I assumed that the icing was buttercream and was supposed to look like that - as opposed to the smooth ready to roll icing.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 26/07/2020 14:37

Are those flowers those wafer ones you get in packs.

Beautiful3 · 26/07/2020 14:38

Can you post a picture of the whole cake?

Crumpets111 · 26/07/2020 14:38

No I would not be upset because there are far bigger issues to cry over right now than a cake.

WhattheHhashappened · 26/07/2020 14:39

If you’re not friends with her send her a link to this. It’s neither nice or well finished.
It does look like something I make for my family birthdays - very sloppy and I wouldn’t be happy parting with £80 for it!
Also, If it took her 3 days to ice/decorate there is something seriously wrong with her! Unless of course she meant 1/2 hr each day for 3 days.

There are always bigger issues, that's irrelevant.
starfishmummy · 26/07/2020 14:39

I've read on now about her response that it was buttercream. The original picture could frankly be anything and surely the type of icing should have been discussed with you?

So you’re happy to be ripped off because we’re in a pandemic?
OP isn’t BU.
Now is exactly the time NOT to scam or rip people off.

2020wasShocking · 26/07/2020 14:42

It’s not smooth and you did show her a pic where cake had a smooth finish. So from that respect then yes, it’s not what you said for.

I’m just wondering if that’s the ‘in style’ at the moment? Where it’s a bit rustic? I know I’ve seen wedding cakes that have that ‘in’ look. Where it’s not totally smooth etc...

Although, that’s not what you asked for so she should’ve have decided to change it!

2020wasShocking · 26/07/2020 14:43

asked for not said for 🤣

echidna1 · 26/07/2020 14:43

Er, she wasn't there when you picked it up, got her teenager son to hand it over to you then radio silence.......tells you all you need to know.

She either ran out of time or she outsourced it for someone else to do.

It's really not good and if you have used her previously without any issues, then can you not pull up pics of all her previous cakes and show her how rubbish this cake is in comparison?

Chickychickydodah · 26/07/2020 14:43

I would say that you’re unhappy and not use her again

2020wasShocking · 26/07/2020 14:44

shouldn’t

WhattheHhashappened · 26/07/2020 14:45

BTW, the cake you sent her looks like a flawless finish buttercream. That takes patience & time. She’s trowelled it on yours.

forfoxsakee · 26/07/2020 14:47

Full cake.

Do you have any photos of previous cakes she has made?
