Would you be happy with the finding of this cake for £80

I ordered a graduation cake from a lady who I have used for years and all of the cakes have been beautiful which is why I've returned every time. However I picked up this yesterday and I'm a little disappointed in the size and finish compared to the picture I sent of how I would like it. I've messaged her to tell her I was a little disappointed with it but she hasn't replied so am I being unreasonable? She wasn't in when I picked it up she left it with her teen son to hand over so couldn't really say anything there and then.

@Osirus

The photo of the full cake is on the app.
Can you paste it here? Don't know if that's possible.
Thisismytimetoshine · 26/07/2020 16:41

Oh, x post!

That's a very pale imitation of the cake you asked for, op. The colour is grim, too.

Darkdecent · 26/07/2020 16:46

As an amateur cake maker, that is rubbish. Perhaps she had overbooked so contracted it out to someone else or got her son to do it!

Binkybix · 26/07/2020 16:47

It doesn’t look like the one you asked for. But now I am desperate for cake.

BranchAndPoppy · 26/07/2020 16:47

Yeah, that's awful, now I've seen the full cake pic.
Definitely not worth £80! Definitely don't use again op. How annoying.

Pinkcat231 · 26/07/2020 16:50

Post that side by side comparison to her page with an honest review of what happened, it speaks for itself!

Well, yes. I'd eat it, I just wouldn't want to be the one paying for it Grin
DryHeave · 26/07/2020 16:54

Sloppy finish. And where’s the rest of it?!

Pikachubaby · 26/07/2020 16:57

Was it delicious though?

Or was it stale (as it has been hanging around for three days before the icing was finished)

Thisismytimetoshine · 26/07/2020 16:59

It is literally half the cake you ordered, height wise.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 26/07/2020 17:04

The last o in congratulations seems to be sliding away from its friends.

It’s no where the height you asked for. I thought the top had been piped, but now I see it hadn’t been smoothed.

It’s the cake version of eBay prom dresses ‘What I ordered V What I got’
Here: (pic)

Are the orchids silk or icing?

Consideredopinion · 26/07/2020 17:07

No it's crap.

At least there isn't a fag butt in the background ..... anyone else remember that cake thread, it was bloody hilarious

MarshmallowsOnToast · 26/07/2020 17:10

Those flowers are definitely not icing!

Oh my god that was glorious, best ashtray photobomb ever Grin
JonHammIsMyJamm · 26/07/2020 17:11

£80?! Saw you coming. It looks awful.

Livingoffcoffee · 26/07/2020 17:12
@Livingoffcoffee buttercream can be made near perfect. The trick is to let is to apply more icing than needed, use a bench scraper to remove the excess, put in the fridge to let it set hard then quickly before it condensates apply more buttercream to the outside and remove the excess. This will fill the little air pockets you get in the first coat.

For the top just work carefully to bring the edges in smooth. Once you get the practice you will find it pretty easy, not as easy as 'rustic' but it's a good skill to have.
Oh yes I do know that - and do that - but it does still look different than fondant, which tends to be what people expect

Grilledaubergines · 26/07/2020 17:13

OP, 3 days to cover in buttercream?Shock.

How old is the sponge then? She’s totally lied about the time taken - to fill and cover, that would be 1.5hrs max to a smooth sharp finish. Plus time for the other pieces on it.

3 days... she’s a joker alright.

Bluegeode · 26/07/2020 17:13

I’m a professional cake maker and I would be embarrassed to have made that, let alone charged anyone for it. Not sure what’s happened there but you should definitely speak to her about it and get a refund.

Bluegeode · 26/07/2020 17:15

For £80 I would have done four layers, a beautiful smooth finish and plenty of buttercream or fondant flowers and decorations, no fake flowers for sure.

3cats · 26/07/2020 17:17

I'm going to guess polyester.
