To even think of going abroad?

Bridecilla · 25/07/2020 16:58

We are the laziest holidayers ever. We spent 2 weeks lazing by and playing in the pool in Turkey last year. Utter bliss and did us the world of good as a family.

Usual crap with working full time and a decent commute means family time is stretched so a lazy holiday suits us perfectly

Pretty much accepted not going this year after pricing up UK breaks (had a thread last week- £1400 for a week in a hot tub lodge)

I've spotted a dirt cheap 5 star plus AI in Turkey and we're so tempted. Has anyone been abroad really recently? Would we notice much difference if all we do is pool, meal and drinks usually?

We left the hotel complex once last year to nip to a market - we really are lazy!

We have booked for Dubrovnik in September. We will do the same, and like you it does us the world of good. My only worry would be that lots of people are booking and having their holidays cancelled on them later on. For Dubrovnik and Jet2 many, many have had their flights cancelled. I'm half expecting it to happen to us too. So.. I would book, but bear that in mind.

Totally depends on your appetites for risk. I'd do it. I think covid will be around for ages and you can't put your lives on hold indefinitely. After the tough year we've had, recharging the batteries is really important.

You'll get heaps of people telling you it's too risky. But unless you are high risk of being badly affected if you get covid, then I'd get on with normal life, just taking sensible precautions like lots of hand washing.

Bridecilla · 25/07/2020 17:18

We're lucky that we've both got a month off so as long as I had everything washed and ready we could book and fly with a day or so notice.

I really am torn.

I'm sitting outside a cafe in Berlin right now. Everyone is wearing masks in shops and on public transport but not many wear them in the open air.

cologne4711 · 25/07/2020 17:44

If you are in Berlin why are you wasting time on MN? Go and enjoy the city!

I am very envious. I follow a chap called AndyBtravels on Twitter and he is in Germany at the moment.

Rollmopsrule · 25/07/2020 17:51

We've booked a holiday at the end of Aug to Greece. Taking a risk yes but it was super cheap, a place we've always wanted to go and covered by the Covid insurance policy some tour operators are now including in their price now have so we've gone for it. Can't wait!!

lydia7986 · 25/07/2020 17:52

As long as you will be able to quarantine for two weeks when you get back IF Turkey is added to the ‘unsafe’ list while you’re away.

The government is about to put Spain back on the unsafe list as it is experiencing a second wave, which means that all the tourists currently there who didn’t think they would have to quarantine on return will now have to.

This could happen to any of the countries on the safe corridor list.

AmiSpan · 25/07/2020 17:56

I’m currently in the Canary Islands. It is bliss. We feel very safe as there’s hardly anyone here. Our only concern was with the flight where people weren’t taking the mask wearing seriously.

I’m able to WFH so no problem with quarantine if the rules are changed. We also have COVID insurance.

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/07/2020 17:57

Let me guess. His time is expensive, yours is cheap.

Charity all the way.

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/07/2020 17:57

Wrong thread!

labyrinthloafer · 25/07/2020 18:01

Just seen on another thread the two week quarantine from Spain is back in place so just be careful if you have to get straight back to work. Pick somewhere very covid-cautious!

labyrinthloafer · 25/07/2020 18:01

Oh sorry, didn't rtft did I.

CrayonedWalls · 25/07/2020 18:09

We’re going abroad yes. If it gets cancelled, it gets cancelled - we also have Covid flexible terms in the booking policy and we’ll deal with it when the time comes. Bud until then... ☺️

chopc · 25/07/2020 18:12

How the hell did you get a dirt cheap 5 star all inclusive in Turkey? The cheapest for 5 of us (kids aged 17, 14 and 12) was still around the £4K mark for 4 nights

AmiSpan · 25/07/2020 18:12

@labyrinthloafer do you have a source please?! I’m in Spain and didn’t know anything about this! 😱

I didn't know the quarantine was back for Spain?

Iamclearlyamug · 25/07/2020 18:21

I’m literally in turkey right now and it’s fine - hotels have lots of protocols in place for social distancing and people are vigilant about wearing masks when they’re supposed to. Go for it - turkey have done an excellent job controlling the virus and arguably its safer than the UK!

whiteroseredrose · 25/07/2020 18:27

If DD's passport turns up we may go to Iceland. So kind of leaving it to fate.

We've hardly been out for months, lots of space on the plane (lots of seats free) and we'll be in Apartments, in the car or outdoors.

We'll buy the more medical masks from Lloyd's for the flight.

alphabetsoup1980 · 25/07/2020 18:34

I can't believe the amount of posters who are on their holidays and on mumsnet !! I'm currently sat breastfeeding my babby. If I were on holiday there is no way I'd be wasting my time on mumsnet 😂😂😂😂😂

Planetaryexplorer · 25/07/2020 18:43

We have Portugal booked for end of August. We booked it before Corona Virus. I'm hoping they open up the air bridge soon so it's just a waiting game at the moment. Both dh and I should be fine if we need to quarantine. I really hope we can go.

CrayonedWalls · 25/07/2020 18:47

  1. Turkey has more daily infections than the UK, so it's not really safer. Maybe same.
  2. the problem with travel that even if the individual doesn't have symptoms s/he may be carrying the virus and spreading it on the airport, flight, holiday spot. So yes, you'll be "safe" but you potentially can cause a lot of grief for others. All because you can't sit on your arse for 1 summer.... and you need a holiday. Well, we could all do with one I'm sure.
  3. I don't get how it's never an issue that on holiday you'll be eating food that has been prepared by who knows who and drink from glasses touched by potentially multiple ppl, sit on chairs that might not be sanitized correctly.... Again, if everyone could think these things through and act responsibly and let this summer holiday season go we would be in a much better place. All this moving around is doing nothing else but prolonging the need to lockdown/ease/lockdown again...
DazedandConcerned · 25/07/2020 19:15

I'm in Rhodes right now. 5 new cases in all of Greece today so pretty safe in comparison. Hotels have new protocols like no self serve drinks or buffet. It's been fine - we do miss the resort we usually go to in Egypt but it's been sunny, warm and the Greek people welcoming.

No regrets. Plus a 4 hour flight was doable in a mask.

A word of caution: do read up on the current tensions between Greece and Turkey before you book. I've seen multiple military helicopters in the sky over Rhodes. There is also a massive military build up. Doesn't seem to be widely reported on in the UK.

Good luck and enjoy your holiday.
