To think mask wearing is going to wear thin before long ?

I’ve already noticed people starting to flag in Scotland. In Tesco today I was bored shitless doing the weekly shop and counting 20 people with masks on Chins and under noses. Kids using them as hankies 🤢. I heard also the government might be advising glove wearing. I imagine this is going to start to become very impractical for some people and they’ll just not bother / or bother going out. My DH is exempt from mask wearing and he went out without today expecting some comments but not a peep from anyone! Also the one way aisles have been removed too meaning more folk all crammed in to a small space not socially distant. I overheard a couple saying “ what’s the point wearing masks when we are so close anyway?”

I’m a doctor (for 20 years) and never had to wear one before Covid. I fainted the first day, whoever have become used to them. I don’t like it, but I totally accept that this is safest for everyone, so please wear your masks!

MotherofTerriers · 25/07/2020 17:00

I think it will become normal (as it already is in some parts of the world) and we will get used to it.

MuffinHead · 25/07/2020 17:00

Agree, #NoMaskSelfie was trending on Twitter yesterday I think, people showing off that they didn't get told off in supermarkets for not wearing one Hmm I understand people saying they can't breathe in them, I find the fabric masks a bit too much but the blue plastic ones I think are fine, and I have asthma too.

I haven't left the house since the new rule has been brought in so not aware of how my town has reacted to it.

ThatDamnScientist · 25/07/2020 17:01

@britINscotland

I'm avoiding shopping as much as possible, so the retail industry will ultimately suffer a lot more.

I had to wear one to get my nails done and could not breathe. So I'm going to avoid beauty treatments and try to do treatments at home now.

I also know a mobile hairdresser who does not ask for masks so will use her instead of a salon. I will also use a home dye.

This will just kill businesses even more.

You can breathe, you are just going into new territory. It has been proven so many times by medics (both in them going about their everyday work and a number of experiments carried out by some of them and posted online) that oxygen levels are NOT affected by mask wearing (I am asthmatic, dd1 is asthmatic and we both manage!).

And those saying they won't go to the shops and it will ultimately cause the high street to crash, you are not the majority. No masks? Others will choose not to go to the high street. It is swings and round abouts in that sense. However, masks worn by those that do go reduces transmission - so mask wearing far outweighs the loss of some people choosing not to go to the high street.

Smudgeis13 · 25/07/2020 17:03

I can tolerate them. But I find I don’t recognise people. And there’s no point in smiling at someone.

pennylane83 · 25/07/2020 17:04

Anyone who can’t wear one should be at home as they clearly aren’t well enough to be out. The rest are just being dramatic

But a huge part of the reason why they have become mandatory is to encourage all those sheilding/vulnerable people to leave their homes again and go about their normal business, kickstart the high street because everyone needs to start going back to work etc. The only way the government could see would encourage this was through the use of masks as a placebo (if they really were as effective at reducing virus transmission as is now being claimed they would have been introduced months ago at the same time as other countries). What is interesting however is that I'm now reading a lot of how vulnerable people are now happier to go to the shop but a lot of other unaffected people would be sticking to shopping online from now on because they can't be arsed with the faff of it all.

emilybrontescorsett · 25/07/2020 17:05

I went shopping today and everyone was wearing a mask. Yes I feel not and sweaty in it but I will wear one. The town was very busy so I don't believe it will stop people going out.

MrsGrindah · 25/07/2020 17:06

@oakleaffy Is that you Amber Heard?!

TheletterZ · 25/07/2020 17:06

What are the medical reasons people are except? I know the travelling with lip reader but what else?

TheFaerieQueene · 25/07/2020 17:06

I have asthma. If I can were a bloody hospital grade mask - not a home made cotton one or amazon disposable- in an mri tube, you can put one on to shop.

Timekeeper1 · 25/07/2020 17:06

When shopping decreases further, more stores close and job losses maybe the government will reconsider.

When these people who 'don't want to wear a mask' get sick/die from the virus, there won't be need for them to go to the stores then anyway. Hmm

SchadenfreudePersonified · 25/07/2020 17:07

I find I've got used to them.

Same here.

I'd rather not wear one, bit it's just one of those things that isn't that much of a hardship.

I've made myself half a dozen so I can wear one and stick it straight into the wash when I come in. I'd find gloves more irritating, I think.

madcatladyforever · 25/07/2020 17:09

I cannot see what the huge problem is. I've been wearing full PPE for 4 months now and have been just fine and people can't wear a thin mask for an hour a day. No wonder Australians call us whinging poms. We are an absolute nation of wingers and whiners. Go on YouTube and check out what's happening in India right now then come back to me with your mask problems.

SantaClaritaDiet · 25/07/2020 17:10

@KarenKarendson

If some non official randomer approaches someone about not wearing a mask, they are the one looking for a fight

Yep this. People don't have to give the self appointed mask police an explanation. And if I did have an exemption it would piss me off if people thought they could ask me. For the others that choose not to wear one, I doubt approaching them would make any difference but it does increase the risk of getting physically or verbally assaulted.

but if you are not wearing a mask for whatever reason, it's up to you to stay well away from other people. If you decide to come close to people, they are perfectly entitled to tell you off.
RunningNinja79 · 25/07/2020 17:10

And there’s no point in smiling at someone.
Hides my resting bitch face which is both good and bad. Good because I don't look quite as miserable (when I'm just indifferent), but bad because then I find it harder to avoid sales people etc (I know they're just doing their job, but a lot of the time I can quickly walk past looking miserable)

I have only seen it on here this big argument about masks. The main issue I see is people moaning about people moaning. Still makes a change from moaning about the weather Grin

I wear a mask without complaint and I'm not going to kick up a fuss or have a paddy. However, that doesn't mean I love wearing a mask and that mask wearing is my favourite. Most people find them weird or uncomfortable at first. That's just natural as its a new concept in the UK. Doesn't make them snowflakes though or selfish as they have been called.

When it comes to anyone not wearing a mask. Surely a good 80% will have a good reason and the other 20 certainly aren't going to suddenly put one one cos some randomer thinks they're a snowflake.

Go shopping and wear a mask if you can. Stay at home if you prefer. Judge all those who are not wearking a mask if you must, but its only you getting worked up.

Jojobar · 25/07/2020 17:10

I hate having my face covered so even the thought of mask wearing makes me feel ill. I've been going shopping a few times a week recently as lockdown eased, browsing in clothes shops etc. I won't be doing any of that now until this stupid mask wearing stops.

I've not bought a mask nor do I intend to. Food shopping I will do click and collect. Other shopping will be online. I'm basically going to avoid anywhere that requires mask wearing until these restrictions are lifted. If I have to go into a shop unavoidably, I'll use a scarf or something.

Personally I think it's all a waste of time. So few people have it that your chances of catching it in a shop or supermarket even if no one wears a mask are tiny.

Newwayofthinking · 25/07/2020 17:11

Had a panic attack k today in Tesco, I feel so claustrophobic wearing a mask due to being sexually attacked.

I hate my mouth and nose covered.

JRUIN · 25/07/2020 17:12

I get hot and bothered as it is in shops. I will wear a mask to nip to the corner shop if I have to but apart from that I will be not be going anywhere where wearing a mask is mandatory.

Pollypocket89 · 25/07/2020 17:12

I also think people are struggling with the lack of logic around it all. I need one in a shop but not in school. I need one to buy a takeaway but not in a restaurant. I need one on the bus but not in the office. In the hairdressers but not in the gym.

I think that's a really good point. If it was about health or safety it would have been mandatory in March

diyhelpneeded · 25/07/2020 17:12

I had one on in the hairdressers today and I really felt like I was going to pass out. I was so hot with the hair drier on.

PinkOnWednesday · 25/07/2020 17:14

Many people are mentioning those that can’t/won’t wear them shouldn’t be out in public. Please think about those with disabilities such as autism. You wouldn’t know that a person is autistic and if someone with autism was challenged it could cause them a lot of distress. Some of you seem very intolerant to disabled people and it’s quite upsetting to read

SunbathingDragon · 25/07/2020 17:15

You do get used to them after a while.

I think that if anything people will become more used to wearing them before long and they will start to become part of what’s normal.

CarolVordermansArse · 25/07/2020 17:16

I am not a 'moaner' but I do find it difficult to breathe with a mask on and to find one that actually fits, they either seem to be too close around the nose area, or too loose on the ears. I do have one that fits and it seems the best way to not feel suffocated is to wear one layer of thicker fabric rather than a double layer of thinner material and ensure it is 100% cotton. Can also add a filter.

Now I have found one that works I will make my own and use it as a template. Fortunately I only need it once a week, if that.

lilgreen · 25/07/2020 17:17

I’m getting used to it. Fine if you don’t talk! It’s for the common good so I’ll do it. If I feel hot I think of doctors and nurses stuck in them all day and I get over it.

SmileyClare · 25/07/2020 17:17

NewWayofThinking you have grounds for mask exemption because you were sexually attacked. You can follow other measures to keep yourself safe; 2m distancing, hand washing and going shopping at quiet times. You shouldn't be causing yourself psychological trauma.
