Took my mask off on the aeroplane AIBU

I was on a 5-hour flight recently alone with my two kids under 3. I once every few years might suffer from travel sickness and unfortunately on this day it was the worst I've ever had. I believe it may have been caused by having to wear the mask on the aeroplane. I used 20+ sickbags and felt better during the last hour (vomited for 4 hours, 5th hour was better).
I felt really bad but after I started vomiting I couldn't physically put my mask on because I couldn't breath and it made me gag. The air stewards were furiously coming and telling me to put my mask on every 5-10 mins. I had tears in my eyes during all of this and to be honest I can't comprehend how little compassion they had. They kept coming until I firmly said I would be putting my mask on when I felt better. I was keeping my distance from everyone and had no one sitting in front of me, behind or next to me (apart from my children). I didn't have a fever and it had I had been checked before boarding the plane. AIBU to think there was no reason to harrass me while I was throwing up with my face in a bag? Are you scared of people who don't wear masks? Would you go up to someone ill and tell them to put their mask on?

@mathanxiety why should you know why she took the flight? While it had absolutely no bearing on the OP’s post - am going to take a stab that it wasn’t a family holiday.
So what’s worthy enough? Seeing family? Going “back home”? Funeral?

Anyone can get sick without notice. It happens.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 23/07/2020 18:30

@mathanxiety

OP you did your best to survive a shitty situation that you had no control over.

Ridiculous.

We have yet to hear the compelling reason she undertook this flight.

Until we do, we can assume she had control over the choice of flying during a pandemic despite knowing she was likely to vomit.

And as Lord Commander of the Unwell do you feel you're entitled to this information?
PablosHoney · 23/07/2020 18:30

She was wearing a mask Hooves 🤨 she took it off to vomit copiously, not sure what part of that isn’t clear.

Leflic · 23/07/2020 18:30

@bluebadgehelp101

Don't take it so personally, it's their job. They will be held accountable if they are seen to allow passengers to sit without masks. I fell asleep once on a flight and was woken by a stewardess shaking me violently and hissing "do you not love your son?!" When I came to my senses I realized that (sleeping) ds did not have his seat belt on and the seat belt sign had come on whilst we were asleep Hmm
They do tell you in the flight safety message - every flight, every time, to leave your seatbelt fastened if seated. Probably for this very reason.
weightedpunch · 23/07/2020 18:30

20+ sick bags and they wanted you to put the mask on? Totally ridiculous, I'm suprised by how many have said you're being unreasonable.

OwlBeThere · 23/07/2020 18:30

E) I have flown with kids alone, short of never ever visiting my mother so she could know her grandkids, I didn’t have a choice.

bookworm14 · 23/07/2020 18:33

Of course you’re not being unreasonable OP.

I swear to god, this virus has turned MN completely insane. What is WRONG with some of
you?

Viviennemary · 23/07/2020 18:33

Government rule says you need to do x. Cue for entitled army but.... but..... but..... It is getting very tiresome.

GreytExpectations · 23/07/2020 18:34

YABU. If your travel sickness is that bad then you shouldn't have got on a plane during a pandemic or at least you could have taken sickness tablets. The mask is mandatory and it sounds like they only asked you to wear it when you weren't being sick, which is fair enough.

PablosHoney · 23/07/2020 18:36

That doesn’t apply here @Viviennemary, she was wearing a mask and took it off to be sick not just refusing to wear a mask.

TinySleepThief · 23/07/2020 18:36

Seriously did you willfully ignore the part that said it only happens every 5 years... Also once again I would like to point out masks are not mandatory for everyone, there are exemptions. (Although it feels like talking to a brick wall when this is pounted out).
JacobReesMogadishu · 23/07/2020 18:36

I suspect if you were actually vomiting they weren't telling you to put a mask on.

So it sounds like you were not wearing a mask between vomiting. Which if you're feeling ill I do understand. But they probably have one person per flight claiming "sickness" and refusing to wear a mask. Whether they were reasonable or not is hard to say as we weren't there - maybe they felt you could have made more of an effort. You say that you couldn't breath with the mask on - but tit's been proven that that isn't true. It doesn't affect your oxygen levels.

Yep, OP is SO entitled for spending 5 hours vomiting, who does she think she is?

OP didn't know it was going to happen - something happening roughly every five years isn't 'frequent' or 'likely' as so many PP's seem to think.

Viviennemary · 23/07/2020 18:41

Then she wouldn't put it back on. Who travels without sickness meds if they know they are prone to sickness.

PablosHoney · 23/07/2020 18:43

Normal human beings that aren’t perfect? Is being sick 5 years ago being ‘prone’

TinySleepThief · 23/07/2020 18:44

Who travels without sickness meds if they know they are prone to sickness.

Why do people keep embellishing the OPs post how is once every few years I get a struck down unexpectedly by travel sickness even remotely the same as being prone to sickness??

IdblowJonSnow · 23/07/2020 18:45

Yanbu
How can you vomit with a mask on? Sounds bloody awful.
I'd complain about their rudeness.

Batshittery · 23/07/2020 18:45

If you had a 13 month old child on your knee, and another under 3 next to you and surrounded by 20+ bags full of vomit, I doubt the stewards would have noticed the tears in your eyes.

I think I would have decamped to the toilet and taken the DC with me. It couldn't have been more uncomfortable than what you have described.

NavyBerry · 23/07/2020 18:46

Haha @Rwooley is already here to judge you! That was quick!

IdblowJonSnow · 23/07/2020 18:47

Btw I get travel sick but dont always experience and often csnt tell how bad its going to be. Depends on all sorts of things. I.e. dont usually get it in planes but its happened a handful of times.
Trains I'm usually fine but occasionally I'll feel lousy without any particular reason.

YABU. When you weren’t being sick you should have worn your mask and the air stewards shouldn’t have had to continue to ask you not to put everyone else at risk.

IAintentDead · 23/07/2020 18:48

@ChristmasFluff

The lack of compassion and common sense on this thread is astounding.

Vomiting generates aerosols anyway, so not much point in OP wearing a mask in between as breathing generates far less aerosols. The damage had been done.

Let's imagine it's the worst case scenario. OP was infected with COVID-19 that became symptomatic on the flight, causing vomiting multiple times per hour. Cabin crew could have found somewhere to try to isolate her, and recognised that she wasn't able to put on a mask between spews. Maybe moved people away from the likelihood of splashes and droplets. Surely there is a procedure to enact if someone becomes ill on a plane? And surely the assumption should be it is COVID until proved otherwise?

As it was, what did the cabin crew achieve with their attitude, except upsetting OP at a time when she was clearly under extreme stress already? Did it stop the potential infection of themselves or others? Did it make her more able to wear her mask? No. So they could just as easily have had some compassion.

As could the majority on this thread.

I totally agree with you.
SantaClaritaDiet · 23/07/2020 18:48

if their mother had passed out or become severely dehydrated and unable to care for them. Hmm

Why anyone who suffers from travel sickness would even consider flying in sole charge of small children is beyond me.

clearly.

Fucking hell, is there anything people won't berate the OP for? Shock
