Took my mask off on the aeroplane AIBU

I was on a 5-hour flight recently alone with my two kids under 3. I once every few years might suffer from travel sickness and unfortunately on this day it was the worst I've ever had. I believe it may have been caused by having to wear the mask on the aeroplane. I used 20+ sickbags and felt better during the last hour (vomited for 4 hours, 5th hour was better).
I felt really bad but after I started vomiting I couldn't physically put my mask on because I couldn't breath and it made me gag. The air stewards were furiously coming and telling me to put my mask on every 5-10 mins. I had tears in my eyes during all of this and to be honest I can't comprehend how little compassion they had. They kept coming until I firmly said I would be putting my mask on when I felt better. I was keeping my distance from everyone and had no one sitting in front of me, behind or next to me (apart from my children). I didn't have a fever and it had I had been checked before boarding the plane. AIBU to think there was no reason to harrass me while I was throwing up with my face in a bag? Are you scared of people who don't wear masks? Would you go up to someone ill and tell them to put their mask on?

@TheFirstRuleOfAIBUClub

"I wonder what would people with such extreme views do if someone has a medical emergency and needs some assistance in the street (somebody choking for example)? Let them die just in case they had Coronavirus? I wouldn't be surprised, the world has gone mad!"

@piscis I actually genuinely wondered this the other day. It's not a theory I really want to test in RL, but rest assured if it happens (epileptic) I will come back and let MNers know! I can actually imagine people walking past and not getting involved, specially if there is a mask involved.

Luckily I am prepared. Of course I know from this thread in advance if this happens, I will have been selfish going to the shops - even worse as it was probably for an unnecessary item - stupid for failing to foresee this might happen, irresponsible to cause my DC any discomfort through my selfish action of becoming ill and clearly I need to get a grip for doing anything it anyway and expecting sympathy in the middle of a global pandemic.

And that's before we even get to the Taking Off of The Mask...Certainly I would definitely BU to remove said mask and aerosolise all over other people.

But maybe MNers will think it's to remove a mask when someone is having a seizure? But vomiting isn't a good enough reason. Anyway it depends on the reason why you are in the place you are in and whether random MNers deem your reason good enough.

I think. I'm not sure.

I'm a first aider. Guidelines currently are mask for us and casualty and use chest compressions only. However I carry a pocket mask on my keys and as someone at low risk from Covid (who has already been a suspected case) I know I wouldn't hesitate to give CPR fully if required.

This threat is a perfect example of what we have become. It's so depressing

LonelyGir1 · 24/07/2020 10:36

I am firmly in the camp that the OP should have worn a mask in between being sick, but I hope the OP is okay as she hasnt responded for a while.

Some American airlines are now only allowing under 2s to not wear a mask, and have advised that those who cannot for medical reasons find a different way to travel. I wonder if this will become the global norm soon.

Thank you. You sound an incredibly caring first aider.

@itsgettingweird Thank you. It does actually worry me a little as although there is quite a low risk of it happening, I can genuinely imagine people walking by as they think it would be too risky to themselves to help someone, especially removing someone's mask!

On the other hand, I don't want to go out without a mask as I can see from a vocal majority on MN, I will be judged to fuck for that too. And I would actually prefer to wear one anyway.

It's just so shit that people have just become so selfish and uncaring (so well demonstrated on this thread) I know for some people it comes from a place of fear, but in a lot of other people I think this current situation has given them an opportunity to indulge openly in their natural inclination to be a total cunt - usually frowned upon but now practically encouraged. Sadly, and depressingly, even on MN.

Also, they are stupidly complicit in giving the government protection from their own total fuck ups (eg test and trace) by encouraging people to fight amongst themselves - and not "look up". It's so fucking stupid.

We should do better.

"Given that for months posters have repeatedly said that people shielding were about to die anyway,"

Photos or it didn't happen Hmm

Really, we all know this has not happened - I have no intention of engaging with your total self centredness and attempts to dominate every single thread like this as other people have also mentioned - but just wanted to point out to anyone new or recent to MN this just isn't the case - yes people are being more dickish in general but not to that extent, as I'm sure MNHQ can confirm.

Have a look at the countless, endless threads about Covid. You'll find plenty of examples saying exactly that. One from memory

"We've sacrificed enough. The only people at risk would have died within the next year anyway. Let them stay shielded so the rest of us can get on with living our lives normally"

Look around, you'll see plenty more

Drivingdownthe101 · 24/07/2020 11:40

Given that for months posters have repeatedly said that people shielding were about to die anyway so why should the rest of the country sacrifice anything in order to protect them, or that vulnerable people should just stay at home so that everyone else can crack of with living without restriction, I'm.surprised that you're surprised that nastiness is allowed to stand

I report viciousness, nastiness and shaming wherever I see it, whatever the argument is. MN aren’t bothered.
Plus two wrongs don’t make a right.

TheFirstRuleOfAIBUClub · 24/07/2020 11:45

I'm on the shielding list so have been on lots of related threads and what you are saying simply isn't true.

There is occasionally (in all threads, not just CV) some total knobhead making a comment which is unreasonable by any normal person's standards, but if they're reported they will be deleted. But it's simply untrue that there are plenty of people making comments about us "dying anyway".

But hey, I'm failing at not engaging with you! I shall try harder in future

TheFirstRuleOfAIBUClub · 24/07/2020 11:47

Although I do really want to ask you hooves what you would do if you saw someone requiring medical attention involving mask removal. I shan't derail this thread, I might possibly start one to ask in general. No doubt you will appear!

TheFirstRuleOfAIBUClub · 24/07/2020 11:50

(Sorry to keep posting Blush) but just to point out MNHQ have deleted Maths's needlessly rude and unkind post on this very thread. So they will delete - occasionally they disagree if something (or someone) is delete worthy or not, but in general I think they do a good job.

I believe Netmums has a stricter deletion policy but you can't say cunt there so...Wink

KeepingPlain · 24/07/2020 11:59

It's stupid people only that would expect you to keep a mask on while being sick, so I can't honestly count their opinions as being worth listening to. What was she meant to do, vomit into the mask? Hmm

Next time though op, you now know for certain what travelling can do to you. To make it easier on yourself, ask the doctor for some anti sickness pills to take with you, as a just in case. Least then you won't feel so shit if you do become sick and won't be sick as much either. It will help you out. Doesn't matter if it only happens every once in a while, still take them. It's worth it if it means you won't be so ill. Keeps your healthier and happier.

TheGreatWave · 24/07/2020 12:19

Well this will please the majority. (American airlines)

I would normally agree with you, but I have recently seen some vile, ableist comments left to stand. I’m glad to see Mathanxiety’s disgusting comment was deleted.

This "Karen" stuff is awful.

eatsleepread · 24/07/2020 13:26

That sounds like a hell on earth situation. Hope you're ok Thanks

Michaelschofield · 24/07/2020 13:30

I feel for you . Ignore the vipers. Ridiculous we have to wear masks on a plane anyway. I won’t be wearing one in the shops.

NoWordForFluffy · 24/07/2020 13:55

Bloody hell. It's cunt central in here.

I hope you're OK, OP (I'm also a very rare / unpredictable travel sickness sufferer. I have been sick once - on a very hot, stuffy, plane in 2003 - since childhood. I don't take travel sickness tablets on the off chance either).

@Defenbaker, it's perfectly legal to go on holiday. There is no shame in saying that's where you're flying to / from.

The people saying she had poor judgment in taking the flight at all are just daft (or, in the main it seems, cunts).

Which post got deleted? The one saying OP wasn’t looking after her kids?
