Took my mask off on the aeroplane AIBU

I was on a 5-hour flight recently alone with my two kids under 3. I once every few years might suffer from travel sickness and unfortunately on this day it was the worst I've ever had. I believe it may have been caused by having to wear the mask on the aeroplane. I used 20+ sickbags and felt better during the last hour (vomited for 4 hours, 5th hour was better).
I felt really bad but after I started vomiting I couldn't physically put my mask on because I couldn't breath and it made me gag. The air stewards were furiously coming and telling me to put my mask on every 5-10 mins. I had tears in my eyes during all of this and to be honest I can't comprehend how little compassion they had. They kept coming until I firmly said I would be putting my mask on when I felt better. I was keeping my distance from everyone and had no one sitting in front of me, behind or next to me (apart from my children). I didn't have a fever and it had I had been checked before boarding the plane. AIBU to think there was no reason to harrass me while I was throwing up with my face in a bag? Are you scared of people who don't wear masks? Would you go up to someone ill and tell them to put their mask on?

Bollocks to this

This attitude along with ‘wash your hands‘ Boris is why the virus is doing so well in the UK 😎
@BellaintheWychElm - no, not really. Either make the effort to read it or ignore it - it’s hardly that important one way or the other. What was the point of your post?
Lot of words for not important.

AhBallix · 24/07/2020 00:44

Maybe the cabin crew should've turfed OP out a window and chucked her faulty crystal ball after her. Bloody hell. Some lovely attitudes on here.

Neves7 · 24/07/2020 00:53

The cabin crew was only doing what they have been instructed to do when someone has removed their mask.
On some flights they even warn you that the cabin crew will be checking and repeatedly reminding those who have removed their masks.

mathanxiety · 24/07/2020 02:17

Who said anything about a dastardly plot, Comtesse?

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 24/07/2020 02:57

@slipperywhensparticus

She said she gets travel sick once every FIVE YEARS and this was the worst she had ever been shoukd she really take meds for five years for something that doesn't effect her
Where does she say once every five years? This is what she said

I once every few years might suffer from travel sickness and unfortunately on this day it was the worst I've ever had.

So, every few years, not once in five years.

HerRoyalNotness · 24/07/2020 03:02

@Josette77

Even if you only get sick sometimes you should have been prepared. I think the only thing you could have done was take you 13 month old to the toilet with you as gross as that would be. You can't take your mask off during a pandemic. You knew this was a possibility.
Why? Are they glued on?
KarenKarendson · 24/07/2020 07:08

@KarenKarendson, you have no time for expert public health advice from around the world.

Why is that?

Sorry did I say I had no time for the expert public health advice around the world'? That's right, I didn't say that did I. Unless you're considering yourself as one of the experts. (Which you clearly are not).

I get travel sick about once every 5 years *@Rwoolley*

The fact that this thread is still standing shows than MN has absolutely no interest in supporting people anymore... the angrier and frothier the contributors, the better it seems.

SockYarn · 24/07/2020 07:57

Was it essential travel OP? If it wasn’t, you are being very unreasonable.

And here we go with the ROOLZ where people make it up as they go along. There is no law/rule which says travel should be essential. We are free to travel as we wish, and always have been. Her reason for travelling is entirely irrelevant.

Except for the hardcore posters who have moved from being the Lockdown Police to the Mask Police. No reason for travelling will be good enough, because everyone should be locked in their house, only leaving for food and medical appointments. How dare you go flouting the roolz OP, flocking on a plane and having the temerity to get sick.

As for the "how does a mask make you sick" crew - when you're already feeling queasy the usual advice is to get some fresh air. If you're in a car, stop and get out, walk about. The colder the air, the more refreshing. I don't get travel sick but have had horrendous sea sickness once, being outside on the freezing deck was the only thing which worked. A sniff of warm air or food smells and I was off again. Can people really not appreciate how feeling sick and breathing in warm, damp air through a mask isn't going to make that worse? And you can't open a window on a plane, obviously.

The lack of compassion and the willingness to kick someone who has clearly had the journey from hell is appalling. I don't like what this pandemic appears to have brought out in a lot of posters.

notimagain · 24/07/2020 07:58

I think the crew should have taken OP and her children to the galley as she was being violently sick

A belated back up to Honeyroar's much earlier comment...

Persistent vomiting might potentially indicate a communicable condition..the last place the cabin crew would want to take somebody so afflicted is into one of the aircraft food preparation/handling areas ( that goes back to the issue of the crew having a legal duty of care to everybody on the aircraft).

BTW Good luck at work Honeyroar, hope it works out OK for you....

Rollingfog · 24/07/2020 08:10

Im sorry you felt ill and I’m sure it must have been difficult to deal with with two children on your own. But masks are here to protect us from this horrible virus so we one day may return to normal. When you are vometing you are sharing all your germs with the rest of the plane. So minimising the Risk of spread and putting on your mask as soon as you can is the right thing to do to protect everyone.

romdowa · 24/07/2020 08:17

If you knew there was the slightest chance as all that you could have suffered from travel sickness, you could have taken medication to eliminate the possibility completely. You were selfish not to do so .

ravensoaponarope · 24/07/2020 08:22

Still confused as to how taking travel sickness pills would have stopped the OP vomiting from the sickness bug/silent covid she is also accused of having?

TimeForLunch · 24/07/2020 08:22

This is utterly ridiculous (not you, OP). Of course you couldn't wear a mask feeling like that. It sounds like the staff were way over the top. Hopefully that was because it is all new to them and they will be more considerate in future.

I agree completely. I was amazed to wake up this morning and see the thread still standing. Its attracted some vile comments, it should have been removed yesterday.

It's now just turned into a giant pile on where people feel justified in saying horrible things because they have the anonymity of hiding behind a screen.

Walkaround · 24/07/2020 08:30

@BellaintheWychElm - and your posts have few words with the sole intention of being unpleasant.

yeOldeTrout · 24/07/2020 08:45

How did OP get thru 20+ sickbags? I mean, eventually you empty out, no?

Drivingdownthe101 · 24/07/2020 08:47

@yeOldeTrout

How did OP get thru 20+ sickbags? I mean, eventually you empty out, no?
Is that relevant, unless you’re doubting the truth of that OP?
notimagain · 24/07/2020 08:50

Hopefully that was because it is all new to them and they will be more considerate in future.

So what do you suggest they do next time?

I think there's unreasonableness playing both ways here - Yes there have been some nasty comments but as also been pointed out by several seem to work on aircraft the crew have a legal requirement to make sure everybody on the aircraft is kept safe..they have to be considerate to everybody.

As some here will know somebody with significant sickness/illness in the cabin really ups the cabin crews workload.

In the case of the OPs flight if it really was persistent vomiting the crew may well have been trying to deal with the OP on an almost continual basis, perhaps liaising with the flight crew (who are wondering if there's a diversion coming up and/or if Port Health at the far end are going to need to be informed and all that might entail)..The cabin crew may have, for all all we know been dealing with problems elsewhere in the cabin, also perhaps trying to fend off complaints about the OP not wearing a mask, and also ensure that all the other rules were being followed In the meantime of course perform some semblance of a normal cabin service routine and whatever passes for such these days.

The poor cabin team might not have had a lot of capacity left for full time TLC and unlimited time to display compassion, but I'm sure they did the best they could.

yeOldeTrout · 24/07/2020 08:52

I'm very sympathetic to OP. I deplore the way posters have piled on OP with ridiculous suggestions. Doesn't mean that I can't point out bits of the story that seem odd.

I had terrible morning sickness in 4 pregnancies & too many noro bouts to count. I know a bit about vomitting. 20 bags is a lot to get thru in 5 hrs. Is travel sickness that much more ... "productive"?

Drivingdownthe101 · 24/07/2020 08:52

Where did the OP say she was looking for TLC from the cabin crew? Must have missed that. I thought she just wanted them to leave her alone while she was actively vomiting.

Walkaround · 24/07/2020 09:08

There are a lot of nasty comments on both sides of this. The OP did admit that the crew stopped asking when she said she would put her mask on when feeling better, though. The rest of the post sounds like the hyperbole of someone who had an upsetting, stressful experience of vomiting on a flight with small children to look after.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 24/07/2020 09:45

@Drivingdownthe101

Given that for months posters have repeatedly said that people shielding were about to die anyway so why should the rest of the country sacrifice anything in order to protect them, or that vulnerable people should just stay at home so that everyone else can crack of with living without restriction, I'm.surprised that you're surprised that nastiness is allowed to stand.
