Took my mask off on the aeroplane AIBU

I was on a 5-hour flight recently alone with my two kids under 3. I once every few years might suffer from travel sickness and unfortunately on this day it was the worst I've ever had. I believe it may have been caused by having to wear the mask on the aeroplane. I used 20+ sickbags and felt better during the last hour (vomited for 4 hours, 5th hour was better).
I felt really bad but after I started vomiting I couldn't physically put my mask on because I couldn't breath and it made me gag. The air stewards were furiously coming and telling me to put my mask on every 5-10 mins. I had tears in my eyes during all of this and to be honest I can't comprehend how little compassion they had. They kept coming until I firmly said I would be putting my mask on when I felt better. I was keeping my distance from everyone and had no one sitting in front of me, behind or next to me (apart from my children). I didn't have a fever and it had I had been checked before boarding the plane. AIBU to think there was no reason to harrass me while I was throwing up with my face in a bag? Are you scared of people who don't wear masks? Would you go up to someone ill and tell them to put their mask on?

OP posts:

Interestingly all of the times I was actually sick I had reduced air flow (hot day, extra stuffy vehicle) and so can easily believe that the mask may not have helped when already feeling sick.

And if the same goes for the OP, then she absolutely should have taken travel sickness pills. She knew she would have to wear a mask.

mathanxiety · 23/07/2020 22:36

...we set off back from Cornwall at 5am, DH had to pull over because I was really sick. No idea what brought it on but it can't be helped.

Yes it can be helped.

You take the pills, which are cheap and easy to find.

MaxNormal · 23/07/2020 22:37

You can all screech at people with impunity on here but fortunately you don't get to tell people what to do in reality, or question them about their medical history, or demand they take medication for your convenience.

andweallsingalong · 23/07/2020 22:40

Lol, of course she should have known that wearing a mask on a plane might have kicked off her travel sickness before ever having actually experienced wearing one on a plane.

Until reading this thread it never crossed my mind thatask wearing COULD exacerbate my travel sickness. I'm still not sure, it feels a little far fetched, but now I've thought of it I will be extra careful.

mathanxiety · 23/07/2020 22:41

same if you know you get D&V sometimes
a cold sometimes
chest infection sometimes
or any other ailment really. Do not travel!

What an utterly ridiculous comment.

D&V is not caused by travel.
Colds are not caused by travel.
Chest infections are not caused by travel.
Pretty much any other ailment - not caused by travel.

Travel sickness - 100% caused by travel.

Equally, not many ailments can be easily prevented simply by taking a few cheap, non-prescription pills. But travel sickness can.

It's amazing how compassion must only travel one way.

How about op showing some compassion and consideration to fellow passengers by taking an anti emetic in order to prevent travel sickness? How about everyone showing some compassion to the fellow passengers and crew who have potentially been exposed to either Covid or some other infection? So, once she was being a sick I guess there was nothing to be done, other than everyone else just having to put up with it but it wasn't unavoidable was it? She could have taken medication to prevent it.

I agree with this. I do feel sorry for you OP but really I would rather die than be on that flight and you had had silent Covid then you would have been spreading it to a huge number of people due to the air flow/air conditioning within the plane.

I'd rather die than be in a room with a load of judgmental people particularly ones that can't even be bothered to read and understand the OP before piling in.
mathanxiety · 23/07/2020 22:45

@PablosHoney

Didn’t you know it’s become the ONLY thing you can get sick with and die from, SockYarn

I'd love to see your list of things people can get sick and die from that other people can prevent by mask wearing, that put covid into perspective.
Cancer?
Heart disease?
Complications of diabetes?
Severe asthma?
Car crash?
Being hit by a train?

You say you wear a mask. Do you understand why?

PablosHoney · 23/07/2020 22:46

Nope, no bite ☺️

mathanxiety · 23/07/2020 22:48

And don’t even think of travelling as a single mother.

@PablosHoney
She hasn't said she is a single mother.
Just that she was traveling alone.

I have traveled alone on long haul flights with small children. Lots of women do.
Anyone who has done it knows how much planning and forethought it requires.

Your cheap shots are becoming more and more silly.

LastResorts · 23/07/2020 22:48

This threads hilarious! One pill will fix all travel sickness & someone would rather die than share a plane with a possible COVID19 super spreader, a silent one may I add

I feel for you Op, by the sounds of this thread if you choke in public you will die, The selfish people on this thread will not help you in case you have Covid

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 23/07/2020 22:49

Good god some people on here are just ridiculous. OP didn't know she was going to get ill. What should she have done jumped out of the fucking plane? Once you're on the plane and being sick, what exactly can you do about it? Honestly all common sense has gone out the window.

mathanxiety · 23/07/2020 22:49

'No bite' because you realise how ridiculous your comment was?

PablosHoney · 23/07/2020 22:49

😂 Keep trying

LastResorts · 23/07/2020 22:52

@Iminaglasscaseofemotion she should have been ejected from her seat immediately GrinGrin

mathanxiety · 23/07/2020 22:52

I want to do a study into how much the population behaving like arseholes has increased due to Covid.

You don't have to do a study, KarenKarendson et al.

You can just count the people you see out without a mask, and posters here mocking people who dare to remind them that there actually is such a thing as society.

Flu kills more children every year than have been killed by CV19. So does measles, chickenpox, herpes simplex, norovirus AND that's just in the uk

And yes - they would all be reduced by good hygiene.

Possibly masks - but as with covid this is debatable.

Bebbanburger · 23/07/2020 22:53

Oh no I would have hated being near you on that plane. I would have presumed a sick bug and would have got the fear. I don't know how air stewards cope. What do they do with 20 bags of sick?? Dramamine are really good for travel sickness.

Pertella · 23/07/2020 22:57

Ah, you had us all going there for a while math, nice one! Spot on impression of a pompous, up their own arse curtain twitcher!

Its always difficult to resist going too OTT though, but you did well to last this long!

Goingprivate2020 · 23/07/2020 22:58

I think you’re being a bit unreasonable. The cabin crew were just doing their job. If you can’t see that then YABU. Masks on planes is obligatory. Many covid infectees have no symptoms. Be flippant about your own exposure but don’t expect others to be, especially at such close quarters with no possible escape from germs.

Omg bless if only she had known she was going to be sick!
mathanxiety · 23/07/2020 23:04

How have I misread the OP, @IAintentDead?

Fro your convenience, here is the OP:
I was on a 5-hour flight recently alone with my two kids under 3. I once every few years might suffer from travel sickness and unfortunately on this day it was the worst I've ever had. mathanxiety · 23/07/2020 23:05

Omg bless if only she had known she was going to be sick!

She said quite clearly that she has previous experience of travel sickness.

Haenow · 23/07/2020 23:06

Oh poor you @Tsubasa1. I do have empathy for the cabin crew too. They were probably really anxious and it sounded like it came across badly from them. Of course you shouldn’t wear a mask if you’re puking. Possibly bad timing that when they looked at you, you didn’t have it on?
Hope you’re ok now.

slipperywhensparticus · 23/07/2020 23:10

She said she gets travel sick once every FIVE YEARS and this was the worst she had ever been shoukd she really take meds for five years for something that doesn't effect her

TheGreatWave · 23/07/2020 23:12

You say you wear a mask. Do you understand why?

In order of reasons:

  1. BoJo told us we needed to.

  2. I have no reason to be exempt.

  3. Annoying people may decide to put me on FB if I didn't wear one.

  4. It makes some people feel that outside is now safe (whatever that may mean)

  5. It may possibly prevent me from passing it on, if I was the 1 in something like 2000 that had covid at the moment, had it asymptotic (as if I suspected I had it with symptoms I wouldn't be out) and coughed, sneezed and sung everywhere.
