Took my mask off on the aeroplane AIBU

I was on a 5-hour flight recently alone with my two kids under 3. I once every few years might suffer from travel sickness and unfortunately on this day it was the worst I've ever had. I believe it may have been caused by having to wear the mask on the aeroplane. I used 20+ sickbags and felt better during the last hour (vomited for 4 hours, 5th hour was better).
I felt really bad but after I started vomiting I couldn't physically put my mask on because I couldn't breath and it made me gag. The air stewards were furiously coming and telling me to put my mask on every 5-10 mins. I had tears in my eyes during all of this and to be honest I can't comprehend how little compassion they had. They kept coming until I firmly said I would be putting my mask on when I felt better. I was keeping my distance from everyone and had no one sitting in front of me, behind or next to me (apart from my children). I didn't have a fever and it had I had been checked before boarding the plane. AIBU to think there was no reason to harrass me while I was throwing up with my face in a bag? Are you scared of people who don't wear masks? Would you go up to someone ill and tell them to put their mask on?

hooves your example would only work if the poster had had the shits 5 years ago on a plane, had been fine every since and then got on the latest plane and had the shits.

You know on the balance of probabilities that you may have an issue so take steps to try to prevent that. On the balance of probabilities there was no need for the OP to take any pre action. In this case, yes she was wrong, but on every other flight she has been right.

TheGreatWave · 23/07/2020 21:01

Gah what I wrote isn't quite what I meant, it should be that if hooves had only had one episode and been fine since.

I think that is what I meant to put.

CottonSock · 23/07/2020 21:02

Yanbu about the mask.
But unreasonable to travel with a toddler and a baby when you have travel sickness so badly you must not have been able to care for them. The older one must have been worried. Medication or a second person needed. Or botj for the sake of other passengers.

IAintentDead · 23/07/2020 21:02

@Hearhoovesthinkzebras

Should I just not bother then in future? Presumably other passengers would not have a problem with me having copious diarrhoea in my seat right? Certainly not you or any of the other posters who think op was fine.

Come off it. CV19 is here to stay, most of us are going to learn to live with it being around - you know, like we do with flu BUT you are never going to leave your home again, except to doctor, hospital and possibly work - until you leave because they don't care enough about you.

Exactly! But in acknowledging this, Hooves and that Anxiety one would have to a) express rationality and b) accept that sometimes you can't plan for everything nor avoid unavoidable situations. I doubt either has the capacity; it's far more exciting on a Thursday evening to attack someone and question the minutiae of their lives in order to beat them a little harder.

But you're spot-on regardless.

shinynewapple2020 · 23/07/2020 21:04

@TheFirstRuleOfAIBUClub

Really you should have had a supply of masks, vomited into each one, removed it and put a fresh one on.

Actually the government advised that masks can be made from T shirts or old socks. Just carry a load of socks around with you. Tie them to your face one at a time and when you feel sick, remove it and vomit into it (as the sock can double as a bag you see) then replace it with a new sock on your face.

I feel like I should send that into Take
A Break Top Tips (or whatever they are called).

Lucindainthesky · 23/07/2020 21:06

The rules are you wear a mask on a plane now. If you have several small children and a known problem with travel sickness then perhaps it's not the best time to fly.

PablosHoney · 23/07/2020 21:06

‘That anxiety one’ 🤣🤣🤣

shinynewapple2020 · 23/07/2020 21:08

Seriously though , OP that sounds an absolute nightmare .

How are people not understanding that there are exemptions to wearing face masks ? Pretty sure the fact that someone is solidly throwing up for 4 hours would count as being not medically fit to wear a mask.

So, your journey OP , were you flying home , visiting family or travelling on holiday. I'm a bit concerned that you may have to repeat this in a week's time.

LastResorts · 23/07/2020 21:08

Some people are being ridiculous. If your being sick how can you wear a mask, if I was on the plane I’d have no problem. If people are vulnerable maybe they shouldn’t board a plane Hmm

LastResorts · 23/07/2020 21:13

Rules of exemption states this

“If putting on, wearing or removing a face covering would cause you severe distress“

wanderings · 23/07/2020 21:15

Why haven't MNHQ commented on this thread yet? Is this nastiness really the impression MN wants to give to the rest of the world? And do certain posters have crystal balls (to say nothing of diamond haloes) that they seem to think everyone should have?

KarenKarendson · 23/07/2020 21:15

And if it does come back and tell us about all the awful people you met along the way

Not only that will I do that, but I'm going to run a Mumsnet bingo for all the posters berating me for (insert behaviour / swear word /insult here) for having the cheek to travel as a single parent with a health condition. 👍

No, my example is that it has never happened but that because I know it possibly could happen I takes steps to prevent it.

In ops case it actually has happened before yet now, when everything is more complicated - Covid, masks, travelling alone with two little children - she didn't take any easy precaution and then is upset because people weren't full of sympathy.

Aaahhh.

So it's discriminatory to say that people who can't wear masks shouldn't go to places where masks are required but apparently it's completely fine to say vulnerable people shouldn't fly?

PablosHoney · 23/07/2020 21:19

It’s called being the devil’s advocate.

eaglejulesk · 23/07/2020 21:21

God some people on this group are beyond ridiculous.

Aint that the truth!

I can't believe the attitude of the stewards tbh. They should have been sympathetic to your plight, not hassling you about wearing a mask - which is just ridiculous when you were vomiting so much.

Pertella · 23/07/2020 21:23

Ugh. Lockdown cunts are now mask cuts.

I was travel sick once about 30 years ago. Maybe I should fashion some kind of nosebag style covering for my nose and mouth on the off-chance I'll need to vomit on the plane next week Hmm

LastResorts · 23/07/2020 21:27

@Hearhoovesthinkzebras I thought everybody wanted Op to be accountable for her actions & take necessary precautions, so why shouldn’t everybody use their judgement?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 23/07/2020 21:30
@Teateaandmoretea

Yes, I agree with the vast majority of experts that masks are very important in preventing the spread of covid 19.

I wear one when I am out because I care about the health and welfare of others. I don't make plans for unnecessary travel or shop for unnecessary items.

I expect others to take expert-advised precautions too.

Again, resorting to ad hominems is a sign that someone has run out of valid arguments.
Please no! I thought the 'not shopping for unnecessary items' crap was finished now!

I used to get travel sick as a child i dont now but funnily enough i haven't taken travel sickness pills every time i travel for the last 40 years. Should I start taking unecessary drugs now "Just in case"?

Pertella · 23/07/2020 21:32

What if taking travel sickness pills actually makes you sick Shock

PablosHoney · 23/07/2020 21:33

What if you gave someone the virus whilst shopping for travel sickness pills!! 😋

Pobblebonk · 23/07/2020 21:34

@Sisterwives

If it was my job, which it was theirs, then yes. Don't take it so personally.
It really isn't their job to tell people who are in mid-vomit to put a mask on.
piscis · 23/07/2020 21:35

Some people have gone mental...there is no common sense.
People saying that the rest of the plane have also the right to feel safe...cannot you see the difference?

 • someone throwing up on a plane is a potential problem. That is, it would be a problem only if that person is infected with Coronavirus. As controls and checks are.done before boarding, that reduces the possibilities. The possibilities are actually not very hight at all
 • the OP being sick is a real problem, it is happening 100%, now,it is not maybe, she is not well FFS.
Seriously... I wonder what would people with such extreme views do if someone has a medical emergency and needs some assistance in the street (somebody choking for example)? Let them die just in case they had Coronavirus? I wouldn't be surprised, the world has gone mad!
