Took my mask off on the aeroplane AIBU

I was on a 5-hour flight recently alone with my two kids under 3. I once every few years might suffer from travel sickness and unfortunately on this day it was the worst I've ever had. I believe it may have been caused by having to wear the mask on the aeroplane. I used 20+ sickbags and felt better during the last hour (vomited for 4 hours, 5th hour was better).
I felt really bad but after I started vomiting I couldn't physically put my mask on because I couldn't breath and it made me gag. The air stewards were furiously coming and telling me to put my mask on every 5-10 mins. I had tears in my eyes during all of this and to be honest I can't comprehend how little compassion they had. They kept coming until I firmly said I would be putting my mask on when I felt better. I was keeping my distance from everyone and had no one sitting in front of me, behind or next to me (apart from my children). I didn't have a fever and it had I had been checked before boarding the plane. AIBU to think there was no reason to harrass me while I was throwing up with my face in a bag? Are you scared of people who don't wear masks? Would you go up to someone ill and tell them to put their mask on?

I do wonder how on earth they expect you to wear a mask while vomiting? Yanbu

Rwoolley · 23/07/2020 16:34

YABU

You put others at risk in a tight space

If you suffer with travel sickness I wouldn't have gone on the flight, it's not worth the risk to yourself or others

Sisterwives · 23/07/2020 16:34

If it was my job, which it was theirs, then yes. Don't take it so personally.

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 23/07/2020 16:35

Well you can't wear a mask whilst you are vomiting!
I think there should be some exceptions and they should have had some sympathy as you weren't just not wearing it because you didn't want to.
I'm certainly not afraid of people who don't wear masks and I wouldn't tell anyone to wear one, ill or not.

Bemorechicken · 23/07/2020 16:36

Don't fly if you know you get travel sick. This virus is AIRBOURNE.

OwlBeThere · 23/07/2020 16:37

@Rwoolley how on Earth was OP to know it would get so bad? And how are they meant to wear a mask whilst vomiting??

YANBU OP, all common sense seems to have gone out the window you can’t wear a face covering whilst vomiting!

Nottherealslimshady · 23/07/2020 16:38

Well you cant wear tour mask while vomiting but you can the rest of the flight. Everyone knows it's the rules, it's no surprise. You should have taken travel sickness tablets if you get travel sick.

Kenworthington · 23/07/2020 16:38

Oh god this is such a fear of mine to get stuck in an enclosed space with someone vomiting was I’m massively emetophobic 🤢 id have been so stressed I’d have prob cried.

Tsubasa1 · 23/07/2020 16:38

I get travel sick about once every 5 years @Rwoolley

I can see both sides i suppose. You obviously can't wear a mask while being sick, but it is possible others were complaining to them and so they felt they had to be seen to be doing something. Awful for you though. The problem is though someone could potentially have covid and also travel sickness so that is why they were concerned.

Gently, if you are that unwell flying then maybe flying isn't for you. I don't know if there is anything you can take maybe. I would certainly avoid travel on a plane until the mask regulation is lifted though (obviously you need to fly back)

PablosHoney · 23/07/2020 16:40

Would they not let you do some of the throwing up in the toilet

islockdownoveryet · 23/07/2020 16:40

I do wonder how on earth they expect you to wear a mask while vomiting? Yanbu
I agree and yes you need to wear a mask but people are exempt if they hand illnesses or disability and this is a circumstance when common sense would suggest you are ill vomiting and can't wear a mask until you feel better .
Honestly not everything is black and white. Hmm

islockdownoveryet · 23/07/2020 16:41

And seriously someone would complain about you even though you are clearly ill . Hmm

Tsubasa1 · 23/07/2020 16:42

@PablosHoney No, I had a 13 month old on my lap.

BarbedBloom · 23/07/2020 16:42

X posted. You obviously couldn't anticipate it then. Just avoid flying until mask restriction is lifted.

I must admit, I couldn't bear to be sat in same area as someone being sick that much either. I probably would have been sick myself. Really difficult situation.

Yes I wouldn't like being near someone not wearing a mask while flying, but I am immune suppressed so wouldn't be on the plane anyway.

Chocoholic12 · 23/07/2020 16:42

YABU. Yes I would. Get the mask on. If you get that sick do not fly during a pandemic where you have to wear a mask. Rude and entitled.

crustycrab · 23/07/2020 16:44

YABU.

I'd have hated to be on that plane. Grim 🤢

PablosHoney · 23/07/2020 16:44

@Tsubasa1 I feel so awful for you, I got ill on a plane with a 1year old and a 3 year old with separation anxiety who screamed blue murder every time I had to go to the toilet but at least I wasn’t alone and could give the baby to my husband, horrific experience.

Tsubasa1 · 23/07/2020 16:45

Thank you for the nice comment @islockdownoveryet I don't think anyone was complaining about me. Only people who could see me were in the row adjacent to mine and I didnt see them complaining plus the guy was nice throwing me sick bags from his side and tissues. It was the cabin crew that were nightmares just paranoid and unpleasant.

OP posts:
Sisterwives · 23/07/2020 16:45

It sounds like you didn't wear a mask for pretty much the entire 5 hours?

Tsubasa1 · 23/07/2020 16:46

Thank you @PablosHoney, yes it is horrible really!

OP posts:
Ballybeyondthepail · 23/07/2020 16:46

They should have used some common sense.

Rhine · 23/07/2020 16:48

If you genuinely do suffer from travel sickness then you wouldn’t only get it every few years...

They weren’t harassing you they were doing their job, why do you think you are entitled to special treatment?

I can’t imagine how foul it must have been for the other passengers on that plane?

OwlBeThere · 23/07/2020 16:48

@Tsubasa1 yes, you should be able To see the future and know you would be so ill. How rude of you to feel so Ill.

Hmm

God some people on this group are beyond ridiculous.

TinySleepThief · 23/07/2020 16:49

Christ, does no one have any compassion any more. The OP clear said it was unpredictable that she would get sick, I've no doubt she wouldn't have gone on the flight if she knew she got travel sick every time she flew.

You are totally no being unreasonable. Yes I know there is a pandemic happening but you'd think they would show some sympathy when you were clearly not feeling well. We're they honestly expecting you to put it back on in between each bout of sickness?? Confused
