To tell people that my twins are five?

Even though they technically don't turn five until November?

Dh is in a right hump about it. He thinks by me telling everybody that they are already five that it makes people place age inappropriate expectations on them. I think it's all just semantics, and those who actually need to know their real age know it. It's a bad habit I picked up from my mother, and my older children have survived me rounding their age up once their birthdays drew close with out being labelled as having additional needs, as seems to be DH's primary concern.

Is it really that big of a deal?

Yabu - you are the age you are until your birthday, then the go to the next age. The point in time when you start using the next age is the birthday. Your twins are 4 or 4 and a half. Come October they’ll be almost 5.

This is v weird.

GrannyBags · 26/07/2020 17:01

Lying about your child’s age to random strangers is weird.
Lying about your child’s age on a document that could be for insurance purposes is irresponsible - congratulations for making the OP look less batshit in comparison

You are right, @lottiegarbanzo - I am a numpty!

It doesn't refute the main point, though. Whether under 12 was too young or over 11 was too old, the insurance would have been invalidated just the same if the child was outside the insurance parameters.

@DrinkFeckArseGirls

Are you originally from another country, OP? My mother does that and I think it’s quite common in Poland, although I find is very irritating. 13.20 is 14.00. After your birthday, let’s say 20, you’re 21 as you started the 21st year of your life, etc.
But you aren't 21 until you complete that 21st year.

Birthdays happen at the end of the relevant year, not the beginning. We don't say a baby is 1 until that first birthday.

Insurance companies will do anything not to pay. They'd be positively rubbing their hands with glee for such an easy get out as an incorrect DOB!

SoupDragon · 28/07/2020 09:00

We don't say a baby is 1 until that first birthday.

We don't in the U.K. but DrinkFeckArseGirls was saying it is common in Poland.

It would be better to say 4 1/2 it will confuse the twin's too, and people will expect more of them 😁💕
