Not to tip the hairdresser?

harryberry44 · 22/07/2020 17:59

I went for a cut/colour/highlights in quite a big salon.
Got to the till and she said £135 and already had the amount on card machine.
I didn't know what to do.
Should I have said take a extra £5 or have gave her £5 coins
I was really unsure as I felt stupid
Aibu not tipping ?

I stopped tipping as the cut it self is quite a lot, and £2 seems a bit low, and I didn’t want to add another £5 to my bill so just stopped. It’s been fine first few timeS was a bit awkward but it’s all ok now

RunningFromInsanity · 22/07/2020 18:03

I don’t tip in big salons if I’m being honest. £135 is quite enough without adding extra.
If I pay with cash (unlikely for such big amounts) then I might say keep the change.

The80sweregreat · 22/07/2020 18:04

You could have given cash , but I know that is frowned upon at the moment because of COVID! Extra tip next time your in?
Buy her some chocs and drop them in ?

piscean10 · 22/07/2020 18:05

I'm not sure how this tipping hairdressers started. They are providing a service just like anyone else. My haircuts are quite expensive and between dh , ds and myself we see our hairdresser once a month. We provide him with enough business- dont need to tip.

moomin11 · 22/07/2020 18:07

I don't tip unless I'm particularly pleased with a new style or something, a cut and colour costs a lot as it is.

Meredithgrey1 · 22/07/2020 18:07

I've never tipped my hairdresser, I didn't realise it was a thing Blush

harryberry44 · 22/07/2020 18:08

I'm assuming my hairdresser gets paid a already agreed wage from salon so if I say take extra £5
It would go to the salon
Plus no tip jar

I wouldn’t tip my hairdresser, I’d actually feel more awkward about it than just paying the bill presented to me

I certainly wouldn’t drop a box of chocolates in to her after. (Why is it always “chocs” or “posh chocs” on MN?!)

BluebellForest836 · 22/07/2020 18:15

I wouldn’t be tipping at £135 a go so don’t worry about it.

piscean10 · 22/07/2020 18:15

Why on earth would you make a trip and drop of 'chocs' ??

20viona · 22/07/2020 18:17

Why are we tipping hairdressers?! I certainly wouldn't at £135 a pop.

JustHereWithPopcorn · 22/07/2020 18:18

I've never tipped hairdressers Blush

Scarby9 · 22/07/2020 18:19

I do tip, but my cut was £22, so I don't feel I am in any way paying too much to start with. Apparently, it has gone up to £25 post-lockdown, but I haven't been yet.

DotDotDotty · 22/07/2020 18:27

I don't tip, as if I tipped the hairdresser I'd need to tip the lady who waxes my eyebrows, then I'd need to tip the lady who does my eyelashes, then I'd need to... It would be a massive cycle!
Also a £135 a visit I'd feel that was quite enough.
Might be me being mean but I wouldn't drop in chocolates either. You've paid for a service, which she's provided... She's not done you a favour.

Chloemol · 22/07/2020 18:32

I don’t tip. It costs enough as it is

Beautiful3 · 22/07/2020 18:32

I used to tip my hair dresser until I realised that she put it straight into the till! No tip jar. It went straight to the salon owners! Never again.

HM1984 · 22/07/2020 18:34

I've noticed a few people do this but I personally never have. Its a very American thing to tip whereas in Japan I believe they find it offensive (not that we are in Japan or America!). I do find it awkward though when the stylist walks you over to the till and wait for your payment to be processed before saying goodbye, like its expected sometimes!

SpeedofaSloth · 22/07/2020 18:37

I don't tip my hairdresser, there is no tips jar and I pay by card, there is no option to e.g. round up the bill. So I don't see any of the things which would make me think they would expect it.

daisypond · 22/07/2020 18:41

Why would you tip a hairdresser?

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 22/07/2020 18:41

I don’t, it’s a big Aveda salon and costs £££. I always buy her something at Christmas - this year it was a book she had mentioned being interested in, and a bunch of flowers.

When I go at the weekend I have a nice bottle of wine for her, and a card, because she is bloody well leaving me! She’s not going to another salon so I am really glad I have managed to get in to see her before she goes.

maddiemookins16mum · 22/07/2020 18:41

I went to a home based hairdresser today. Fantastic haircut for £30. I gave her £35.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 22/07/2020 18:42

I don’t tip either, I just pay for the service. No different than any other service.

islockdownoveryet · 22/07/2020 18:46

If I pay by card I just get a couple of £ in cash to the hairdresser for tip .

Roselilly36 · 22/07/2020 18:46

Is that what you usually pay OP? That seems a lot to me, but of course hairdressers have been without income for months & PPE costs need to be factored in, I wouldn’t be able to leave without tipping though tbh.

Coldspringharbour · 22/07/2020 18:49

My hair is usually just over a hundred quid. I’ve never tipped the hairdresser.
