Not to tip the hairdresser?

harryberry44 · 22/07/2020 17:59

I went for a cut/colour/highlights in quite a big salon.
Got to the till and she said £135 and already had the amount on card machine.
I didn't know what to do.
Should I have said take a extra £5 or have gave her £5 coins
I was really unsure as I felt stupid
Aibu not tipping ?

Don’t tip and don’t feel guilty .

alseb · 22/07/2020 18:51

I used to tip the junior stylist/apprentice when they washed hair etc.

Griselda1 · 22/07/2020 18:57

I always tip between 5 and 10pds and my hair dresser owns the business. She reopened her business and sent out appointments to her clients but didn't send one to me.Her next appointment for me is now mid August which will be 6 months from my last appointment. I won't be tipping again and don't see the logic in it for anyone except waiting staff.

jomaIone · 22/07/2020 19:09

I don't see the logic in tipping anyone to be honest.

But hairdressers? It already costs £££ and they're doing a job they get paid a wage for. Same as the girl on the till in Tesco who I don't tip, and also the man at the chippy who I wouldn't tip either.

Also if everyone bought the hair dresser a box of 'chocs' (🤮) they would get at least 6 a day which is fucking ridiculous.

No, you don't need to tip a hair dresser.

heartsonacake · 22/07/2020 19:11

YANBU. They are paid to do their job, they don’t need tipping. Nobody in this country does.

Cherryade8 · 22/07/2020 19:14

I dont tip the hairdresser anymore. Just leave it.

PushyMeez · 22/07/2020 19:17

I always tip in restaurants so I'm not against tipping in principle. But I never tip my hairdresser. The cut and half head foils is £85 so it already feels like quite a lot to spend tbh.

Quarantimespringclean · 22/07/2020 19:20

I had my hair done last week. The woman who cuts and colours it owns the salon so I don’t tip her but I did ask her to add £2 to my credit card charge as a tip for the junior who washed my hair.

VerbenaGirl · 22/07/2020 19:21

I give a decent gift at my last appointment before Christmas each year, as she is the proprietor.

museumum · 22/07/2020 19:27

My hairdresser and her sister own their salon / yoga studio with just a few freelancers in to help. They are awesome but I consider supporting them by going there and leaving good reviews to be my contribution. I’d feel daft giving them a fiver tip like some kind of pocket money, they’re accomplished business women.

Alloverthegrapevine · 22/07/2020 19:30

I don't tip. I'm there for about 30mins and it costs £53. That's enough.

Incrediblytired · 22/07/2020 19:34

I don’t tip but my mum always does. I think it’s an older generation thing, when I was a kid she would always give 50p to “the girl that washed my hair” (this is 30 years ago so 50p was worth a bit more)

Siddalee · 22/07/2020 19:45

I’ve been going to the same hairdresser for about 15 years. He started his own salon and still charges me loyalty rates. I rarely tip.
BUT yesterday I tipped him £50. I know how much he’s struggled during lockdown whereas everyone in our house has been at work through lockdown. So Ive come out of lockdown with more money than I went in with.
Now my hairdresser can only have one client at a time in, he’s had to charge me more. I paid £105 yesterday rather than the usual £75. So I gave him the money equal to what I would have spent in the salon had I had my appointment during lockdown.

Siddalee · 22/07/2020 19:45

I’ll do the same for the girl who does my nails when I go there too

vintageyoda · 22/07/2020 20:07

I do tend to tip most times. I am an irregular hair salon attendee though. I always wonder what I'm tipping for, it costs enough as it is. Over £100 for a cut and colour and it rarely looks any better than when I do it myself, and it take ten times as long.

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 22/07/2020 20:12

I always tip my colourist, the stylish and the junior either £5 or £10 each in cash. And my cut and colour costs over £200 Wouldn’t dream of not tipping, I’d feel tight.

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 22/07/2020 20:13

+stylist - apologies for typo.

Whoopsmahoot · 22/07/2020 20:14

I don’t tip my hairdresser but always give her a gift at Christmas

MotherMorph · 22/07/2020 20:17

I usually do for my DS hair as he is a complete fidget and the hairdresser is really nice.
I dont get my own hair cut v regularly but one time a year or so ago the hairdresser was very rude about my hair and basically tried to sell me all her products to fix it. She also yanked the brush so hard I thought it would break so she definitely didnt get a tip. Another time I had a mobile hairdresser to do a cut and blow dry (I had already washed my hair as requested) but she charged about the same as a salon wash cut and blow dry which I was a bit miffed about (and she cut way more off than I wanted) so she didnt get one either!

Justanotherwrinkle · 22/07/2020 20:20

You pay £135 for a cut and colour As a business transaction and a PP is suggesting you go back specifically to drop off some ‘chocs’ to say thank you.

Should OP also ‘pop back’ and take chocs to the Costa barista, optician and butcher that she may also have visited

Bonkers

Michellebops · 22/07/2020 20:22

I don't tip any of my services - hair/nails/beauty etc
I don't get tips for doing my job and don't expect to either.

It's an older generation where owners can get a away with paying staff minimum wage and allow customers to top up their wages.

I will in a restaurant if I've had a particularly good meal and staff have went the extra mile.

snowone · 22/07/2020 20:24

I've never tipped a hairdresser in my life! 🙈

The80sweregreat · 22/07/2020 20:25

I must be in the minority as I always tip my hairdresser and buy them a present at Christmas! !
Not sure why but it could be an older generation thing or the fact I just appreciate anyone having to deal with my hair..

I rarely get taxis but I would tip them too. A mumsnet person will tell me I'm mad no doubt! 😀

wagtailred · 22/07/2020 20:29

How long does a cut and colour take?
My last hair cut i was in the chair for 15 minutes and i was charged £45 for it. I did tip. I got home and realised i earn £9.47 an hour and probably the £45 was enough. Its a small village and there isnt much choice.
