40+ year old women posting selfies on social media - is this a new trend?

Quite a few of my friends/acquaintances have recently started posting very posed selfies (without much in the way of a description) on FB and instagram. Women who are well into their 40s, married with children. Is this some sort of lockdown related insecurity? I find it so strange.

I am always wondering, why people put selfies..whatever age,on an open facebook page.I guess it's because they can.People have a camera phone, and are somewhat addicted to this kind of thing.

Some people in the village here are always posting photo's of a cup cake or a sausage roll etc, that they have just bought from the village shop, they get home, put the food on a plate, and take a photo of it to post. Much the same,if they see just one BEE on a flower in their garden,or a bird on a tree branch, it gets posted immediately, all the things we have in our own gardens obviously.

It's all laughable. but simply, it's just what some people do.

Ingridla · 22/07/2020 13:51

It's none of your business what they do! Why do you find it strange? What is strange about it, you sounds like a bit of a bitch. Have a Biscuit

You are?

differentnameforthis · 22/07/2020 13:54

Well... it's their space and you have either accepted an invite into it, or asked to be there (depending which way the friend request went) so YABU to think they are not allowed to post a photo of themselves in their space.

Should they not have photos of themselves up on their walls, either?

SecretWitch · 22/07/2020 13:54

Oh look! Another ageist thread on MN.

You sound very thick, op. HTH.

HappyMealWithLegs · 22/07/2020 13:57

What is laughable about it? Do you not get out much that you find this so laughable?

Terralee · 22/07/2020 13:58

I'm 43. I don't post many selfies as I feel really fat at present but when I do they're with my cat, or my friends, or showing off new specs or something.

thepeopleversuswork · 22/07/2020 14:00

1forAll74

What's laughable exactly about it? Can you articulate this or are you just following the herd of people piling in on other people with scorn for the mildest and least harmful acts of self-expression?

RhianFuckingMorris · 22/07/2020 14:02

Shit! Looks like I missed the memo that says I should have stopped at 40!

That's kinda, well, social media, dude!

You say laughable but I'm reading sneery from you, actually. And it's not a good look. Photographed and uploaded or not.

SummerPoppies · 22/07/2020 14:03

A woman over 40 posting a selfie? Oh god, how dare they?
Don't they know they're supposed to be invisible?
They're supposed to be all about comfy elasticated waistbands and sensible shoes with vanity that only extends as far as a caulihead perm.
They ought to seek help before they infect other 40+ women with this madness.
Women over 40 posing for selfies? How very dare they!!

Lweji · 22/07/2020 14:08

This thread on the back of another with pps saying women over 40 shouldn't have long hair. Hmm

What else is on the list?

I'm writing them down in case I inadvertently offend someone

I should cut my hair as apparently long hair looks nice from the back until I turn round and give judgy twats a fright with my face that is Grin (I saw that thread too lol)

Now I should keep my mush off social media. Luckily I only really post pictures of my dinner or nice things I've done that day but that's probably frowned upon too lol Grin

Duly added to the list along with singing groups such as Rock Choir which was on here a while back now

FFS it's ridiculous, mebbe we should all just stay at home and do mumsy things? whatever that is

Mrsjayy · 22/07/2020 14:19

I don't have no children to look after so I might just resign myself to being useless and find a cave Wink

Illdealwithitinaminute · 22/07/2020 14:19

Oh no, I'm over 40, post the odd selfie, and have long hair!

Once or twice a year. I've found it very liberating not to be afraid to post a picture of myself as I really am on my profile. I spent my twenties and thirties feeling too ugly in photos. Now I realise I'm just a middle-aged perfectly ok looking person who my friends like.

If you aren't into FB or photos with friends, that's fine but you simply aren't better than people that are.

Grapewrath · 22/07/2020 14:20

Where have you been for 10 years?
Selfies are not a new thing, nor age restricted. I’m not a selfie taker but fair play to those who are. Nice to see people comfortable in their own skin regardless of age.
God forbid, women married with kids should do it too. It is quite vain, in some respects but it doesn’t bother me. It’s like saying ‘ I keep seeing frumpy women not caring about their looks’. Who cares, nothing to do with us

Illdealwithitinaminute · 22/07/2020 14:21

And yes to photos of people who are no longer with us. I have an incredible treasure trove of the past few years thanks to camera phones and FB of my loved one. I absolutely love those pop up memories. I know if they had been on an old phone of his, I wouldn't get to see them.

FriedasCarLoad · 22/07/2020 14:21

I tend to associate lots of selfies with being a bit vain, a bit insecure, or both.

Those are traits I think people often mature out of, to some extent. So I'm also surprised at how many middle aged people are now putting lots of selfies on FB.

Jarofflies · 22/07/2020 14:21

Ugh I hate when people post their selfies on FB, regardless of age. It's just fishing for compliments anyway. I tend to roll my eyes and scroll on past.

I wish the selfie thing would hurry up and die out already. I want to see proper photos of people!

notacooldad · 22/07/2020 14:23

In dear. I'm over 40, in fact over 5o,

I have long, dyed ( but nicely cut!!😀) hair
I take selfies sometimes.
I take group selfies if ' being busy having fun'

Hate me now!
Good job I don't give two hoots about judgemental idiots wagging their fingers and pursing their lips at me- who ever they are because they never say anything to my face!!

I'm writing them down in case I inadvertently offend someone
Dont bother! Just live your life as happily as you can.

Purplepie78 · 22/07/2020 14:23

I dislike selfies full stop. No idea why people need to do it.

notacooldad · 22/07/2020 14:26

A bit if fun perhaps?
Me and my friends do it but not for the ' hey hun, you are stunning' Nobe if my friends have said that ever and I would wet myself laughing if they did!!
We do roast each other a bit which can be brutal but funny!

HappyMealWithLegs · 22/07/2020 14:26

I am shortly to turn 40 so I am taking notes.

Get my long hair cut short - check.
Stop taking selfies in pubs - check.
Stop going to pubs - check.

I will keep checking back to make sure I am up-to-date with what is expected of me in a few weeks time.

p00p · 22/07/2020 14:27

An acquaintance of mine posted a selfie. It was followed by tens of messages with the usual 'beautiful', 'stunning' etc. and amongst all this one poster wrote (can't recall exact words, it's a while ago) 'why do you all keep telling her this when it's clearly not true'. It was so nasty. My acquaintance left Facebook and other social media and now hates going outside. It was a truly awful thing to say.

ItsSpittingEverybodyIn · 22/07/2020 14:29

Selfies make me cringe whatever the age, especially sexy type ones!
