Do I need medical attention?

I have done something really stupid. Was out with a few friends tonight for the first time in forever and had a couple of glasses of wine. Came home and in my slightly tipsy state, I walked into the TV cabinet. My knee was sore and swelling up so thought I best take some ibuprofen, which I did, only to realise I have been such an idiot and taken two one a night sleeping tablets instead. I am now really worried as they are both depressants. I don't know whether I should ring 111 or not.. I have taken two 1 a night sleeping tablets before thinking they were two a night tablets and that was okay but the mix with alcohol is stressing me out. Not sure what to do.

I would phone for advice.

AdoptAdaptImprove · 22/07/2020 00:13

I have no idea whether this is harmful or not, and neither do you, so I think you should get medical advice, to be safe.

Rose789 · 22/07/2020 00:17

You are posting coherently so can’t be that tipsy. Have a couple of pints of water before bed and call 111 if you need medical advice don’t post on mn. No one knows your health conditions which medication you are prescribed or the strength. I mean I can get out my crystal ball if you like?

Lorddenning1 · 22/07/2020 00:18

I would stick my fingers down my throat and get them back up, if it was me, it's not pretty but needs must, drank a pint of water and go to sleep

BillBaileysBum · 22/07/2020 00:18

I mean what are we talking here, Nytol or max strength prescription sleeping tablets?

BillBaileysBum · 22/07/2020 00:19

And exactly how much alcohol?

olympicsrock · 22/07/2020 00:20

What have you taken?

NoMoreJunk · 22/07/2020 00:21

Im not to sure about the sleeping pills, but you aren't suppose to take ibuprofen straight after a injury, You should wait 48-72 hours, because swelling in injury is actually a good thing and stopping the swelling, isn't a thing you should be doing straight away

ellaandthebella · 22/07/2020 00:28

The 50mg nytol. I have had two and bit large glasses of wine. I feel tipsy but still pretty with it.

@NoMoreJunk I actually think the literature is quite conflicting when it comes to ibuprofen. Some experts recommend taking it straight away whilst some say wait. I personally have always found it better to take straight away.

Give 111 a quick call op, don’t be embarrassed these things happen.

If it helps, I once bumped my head and took some ibuprofen, then I took two more too soon and two paracetamol except I hadn’t I’d taken 6 ibuprofen and had a mild concussion!

Shmurf · 22/07/2020 00:32

Well, I'm not a doctor but there are people out there who regularly take copious amounts of coke, drink a shedload of booze, and don't die. I'd imagine you'll be fine but defo call to check if you're worried.

ellaandthebella · 22/07/2020 00:36

Thank you everyone :)

@ellaandthebella

If you want to take ibuprofen straight away, ofcourse, thats up to you

NaNaNaNaNaNaBaNaNa · 22/07/2020 00:40

www.nhs.uk/medicines/diphenhydramine/

NHS website has big red letters:
"Call your doctor straight away if you take too much diphenhydramine by accident"

It also clearly says to avoid alcohol when taking. So I would call 111, but chances are you will be fine.

Duemarch2021 · 22/07/2020 00:42

111 tend to ask you your weight and height... if you are heavier and taller it would take more to affect you.... i did soemthing like this once and they basically asked how i felt and told me how many id have needed to take to affect me .. so yeah id probs call them just to put your mind at rest xxx

MaleficentsCrow · 22/07/2020 00:44

Ah you'll be ok OP, it's o my Nytol. They ara like smarties of sleeping tablets, they are a antihistamine not a sedative.

I once accidentally took twice the max dose of Zopiclone (sedative) after 3/4 large glasses of red wine. 111 nurse practitioner basically said, you are going to sleep tonight my dear 🤣

To be fair I did sleep for like 13 hours. I'm still here. 🤷🏻‍♀️

The reason why medication instructions say 'do not induce vomiting' in the event of an overdose, is because aspirating the chemicals you have swallowed can be more damaging than swallowing them in the first place. I'm not being pedantic, just trying to let you know in case you're ever in a situation where you feel you might have to do this.

I have taken two one a night Nytol before after drinking alcohol, and apart from being extremely groggy the next day, it didn't do any lasting damage. That's not to say don't call the GP - you should call - but I'm mentioning this so you don't panic too much.

ellaandthebella · 22/07/2020 00:47

@Duemarch2021 I am quite tall and have a BMI which is slightly into overweight so hopefully that is a good thing for once :) And I do generally feel okay. I shall ring anyway to check I think.

ellaandthebella · 22/07/2020 00:48

@SuckingDownDarjeeling that does make me feel a bit less panicky. Thank you :)

I'd just enjoy a good nights sleep and hope your knee is better in the morning Grin

Ugzbugz · 22/07/2020 00:52

I would think you could probs take alot more and be fine but it's never good to presume, nothing wrong I guess in phoning 111 but presume they will be busy, hopefully there are some GPs around tonight

SpillTheTeaa · 22/07/2020 00:55

Just call them doesn't matter if they're busy you need reassurance. Hope you're okay

God I might try this. Sounds blissful!

oceanbreezy · 22/07/2020 01:10

I would call 111. A clinician will ask about your weight and height etc. They c an advice on what to do
