"treats" - really cringey?

AIBU to find the word "treats" really cringey??

As in "oh I'm on a diet so limiting the amount of treats I eat" or "I brought some treats for the kids"...

In my mind it just really doesn't mean human food at all, it conjures up images of people knawing on a pedigree dentastix... or those disgusting meat sticks that the cats like...

*LIGHTHEARTED (obviously)! Yes I know I have too much time on my hands, but I'm still WFH and a bit bored...

Pamper, picky nibbly bits and goodies make me cringe too

lifeafter50 · 21/07/2020 11:48

YANBU -hate that word!
I don't know if anyone remembers a fab Mike Leigh play from the '70s 'Nuts in May' with Alison Steadman playing a cringe character could Candice who referred wheedling to 'treats' (tho not able to properly pronounce the'r' sound, Always reminds me of that.
I can just about bear it on the context of dog-training, but not people (of any age)

GuiltyBark · 21/07/2020 11:49

The word vegetables when its pronounced with four syllables. VeGEtables. Also Belongings. The middle g really annoys me. Also refreshments, just sounds so twee.

Have we done pamper? Just makes me think of pampers nappies.

maras2 · 21/07/2020 11:49

If I say 'messages rather than groceries, where am I from?

thecatsthecats · 21/07/2020 11:50

What pisses me off is people using it as a shorthand for cake. Especially their piss poor shop bought cake which is NOT a reward in any shape or form, and certainly not worth deviating from my diet plan for.

A treat is whatever will make me feel really happy and rewarded - which includes lots of healthy and savoury options these days.

I'd rather have excellent houmous and fresh sliced carrots than those cheapo box cakes you get from the supermarket.

Gawdzilla · 21/07/2020 11:51

Snacks would have been considered quite a posh word in my house growing up (many moons ago). Was round at my DS house once when her GC were there. The word ‘snack’ was used so often that it became just a noise.

Gawdzilla · 21/07/2020 11:53

Oh and..

ExtremelyBoldSquirrels · 21/07/2020 11:54

@maras2

If I say 'messages rather than groceries, where am I from?
Same place as me possibly.
Onlythepiratesarefree · 21/07/2020 11:55

I find the word ‘treat’ to be overindulgent and a little smug. Though it doesn’t make my blood boil half as much as ’trimmings’ when used in the context of side dishes to go with a Sunday roast etc. Makes me want to scream!

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 21/07/2020 11:57

My otherwise articulate and entirely reasonable DH says “munchies”.

SerenityNowwwww · 21/07/2020 12:00

DH has always said ‘treat? What am I, a dog?’

GracieLane · 21/07/2020 12:02

I hate when "ies" is put on the end of everything. My DD has caught on to this. So she asks for "treaties, choccies, sweeties, crispies, cakies, fruities, toasties" etc. Drives me crazy!

I've started to dislike the word treats because I realise that it is part of weight issues and eating disorders. Treating yourself should not mean eating a family size bag of Doritos with a tub of soured cream, a multipack of mars bars, a partly frozen cheese cake, or a whole trifle, or whatever your thing is.

GracieLane · 21/07/2020 12:02

I try to call a binge a binge and a biscuit a biscuit IYSWIM

diddl · 21/07/2020 12:02

@Mrsjayy

didl I think you are right I am having recollections of a brown packet
Although I might be thinking of Galaxy Counters?

Although when I was a kid they were in a small white(?) packet with a picture of an animal on I think.

GracieLane · 21/07/2020 12:03

I try to use the word smorgasbord instead wherever possible

Poppyismyfavourite · 21/07/2020 12:04

@GracieLane I say "treaties" to the cats! But never to a human!

OP posts:
FortunesFave · 21/07/2020 12:04

Smorgasbord is pretentious.

EagleSqueak · 21/07/2020 12:06

I hate treats, but also toppings and trimmings. So twee. Maybe I should just erase the letter T from my alphabet

Sackofspuds · 21/07/2020 12:07

@maras2

If I say 'messages rather than groceries, where am I from?
Where OH is from. Hate it. I call it "Granny language" Along with housecoat. A lot of it is outdated rather than regional.
DieSchottin93 · 21/07/2020 12:08

My mum and I call them nibbles Grin as in "it's Friday, do you fancy some gin and nibbles this evening?"

ZaraW · 21/07/2020 12:12

I don't have a problem with saying messages. My Irish friends use it all the time.

Mrsjayy · 21/07/2020 12:16

didl counters had a giraffe on themSmile

My parents go for messages I just go shopping.

Manzana · 21/07/2020 12:17

GracieLane · 21/07/2020 12:17

@Poppyismyfavourite

Yes I'm sure if I had cats I would do the same, it's when it's done for every word and for human beings that it's annoying though

Mrsjayy · 21/07/2020 12:18

Smorgasbord is pretentious.

Thought it was Swedish Grin
