"treats" - really cringey?

AIBU to find the word "treats" really cringey??

As in "oh I'm on a diet so limiting the amount of treats I eat" or "I brought some treats for the kids"...

In my mind it just really doesn't mean human food at all, it conjures up images of people knawing on a pedigree dentastix... or those disgusting meat sticks that the cats like...

*LIGHTHEARTED (obviously)! Yes I know I have too much time on my hands, but I'm still WFH and a bit bored...

"I don’t think food should be given ‘morality’ either way, like when people say that certain foods are ‘naughty’ or they’re being ‘bad’ by eating them. It’s food! Eat it or don’t, it doesn’t need a narrative."

Exactly this. It's like when people call things a 'journey'. Not everything needs to be labelled to give it some deeper meaning.

SallyWD · 21/07/2020 11:14

It doesn't really bother me.

Kaiserin · 21/07/2020 11:15

You will love to hate that song then:

www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p07ty7xq/cbeebies-hansel-gretel-song-delicious-children

"Every child I meet is a festive treat", and other gloriously self-indulgent gems (... Yum!)

I think this is my first AIBU thread, it's fun! I was afraid I'd be crucified!

Is this really the best way you could think of to spend your time productively - to start a thread that completely ignores the woe and misery that we all need in order to live proper fulfilled lives? Grin Grin

Thanks. All those years scoffing the flipping things and never noticed.Blush

Were treats the chocolates that melted in your mouth not in your hand?
My friend yells treats at her dog instead of his name, he ignores her. My dog is going for a pamper session shortly, thus avoiding the b a t h word.

Steady on! I think we might have to report your post...I don't think you're actually ALLOWED to enjoy AIBU...
diddl · 21/07/2020 11:20

Couldn't you get chocolate Treets in a brown packet?

They morphed into Minstrels didn't they?

rawlikesushi · 21/07/2020 11:20

"Why is a cheap chocolate bar more of a treat than a fresh salad?"

It's not. I'd never consider a cheap chocolate bar to be a treat and I don't know anyone who would. A treat is something to look forward to and really enjoy - it could be anything, but certainly something you consider to be a bit special.

reeny19 · 21/07/2020 11:20

It’s not just me that hates the word! I especially dislike “tasty treats”

Mrsjayy · 21/07/2020 11:23

didl I think you are right I am having recollections of a brown packet

Poppyismyfavourite · 21/07/2020 11:24

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll Consider me suitably chastised... I should be working. If it helps I'm thinking about a tricky bit of code I'm trying to write?
But what's life without a little fun?

@Zaphodsotherhead that's why I've never been brave enough to post here before! (but I have posted lots on other people's threads and other topics before I get accused of being a troll!)

Oh my god yes! I only ever really see it used on here unless it's referring to dog treats (which doesn't bother me) and I just can't stand it. Always thought it was just me being weird as usual.

WhatamessIgotinto · 21/07/2020 11:26

Oh god I hate that. I did slimming world with a friend who insisted sending me updates of her 'slimming world journey' while I was busy trying not to have any treats snacks chocolate.

PuppyMonkey · 21/07/2020 11:26

When I was a student, my friends and I used the phrase "chocolatey treat" in a post ironic, incredibly clever way ( Grin ) whenever we wanted to express out desire for sweets and stuff. "I really fancy a chocolatey treat, anyone else?" etc.

It is now more than 30 years later and I still refer to chocolatey treats and indeed my DP and all my kids and some of my siblings use this very handy term.

The word I do hate, however, is "groceries" to describe shopping for food. I know this is unreasonable and a perfectly acceptable term, but if someone says "I need to get some groceries" I feel very very annoyed with them. Indeed.

Poppyismyfavourite · 21/07/2020 11:27

Ooh yes "journey" is a really wanky word too...

Incidentally "wanky" is a great word and very apt...

I too hate this word.

"Oh god I hate that. I did slimming world with a friend who insisted sending me updates of her 'slimming world journey' while I was busy trying not to have any treats snacks chocolate."

The best one is "our cloth diapering journey". They are receptacles for your child's shite, how can you possibly assign any deeper meaning to that?!

But I do notice that it is always used for things that are meant to be virtuous. No one ever talks about their bottle feeding journey or their disposable nappy journey or their McDonalds five days a week journey.

People love to market themselves as struggling and being "good".

MaskingForIt · 21/07/2020 11:31

@Calic0 Mind you, when people refer to chocolate as “choc” it makes me want to throw things.

Someone I know write “choccies”. It is literally one letter shorter that “chocolate” so hardly an abbreviation and it really gets on my nerves!

Beautiful3 · 21/07/2020 11:32

I agree with another poster, a treat is a reward. I dont use it for food, I tend to say it when I've treated myself to new clothes or something extravagant.

DomDoesWotHeWants · 21/07/2020 11:40

Snacks is the worst word ever.

Also picky bits.

Toilenstripes · 21/07/2020 11:42

PuppyMonkey
I agree. “Groceries” is a foul word. I don’t know why, but I have the same reaction as you. “Grocery store” is even worse.

mrsBtheparker · 21/07/2020 11:46

Even worse though is "snacking on"

Can I also had the abhorrent phrase 'chowing down on' to mean eating, I've heard it used recently and it sounds revolting, I envisage animals in the field!
