"treats" - really cringey?

AIBU to find the word "treats" really cringey??

As in "oh I'm on a diet so limiting the amount of treats I eat" or "I brought some treats for the kids"...

In my mind it just really doesn't mean human food at all, it conjures up images of people knawing on a pedigree dentastix... or those disgusting meat sticks that the cats like...

*LIGHTHEARTED (obviously)! Yes I know I have too much time on my hands, but I'm still WFH and a bit bored...
@WorraLiberty I just snorted into my tea... thanks
Treats, picky bits etc - all awful.

Not as bad as “spends” though. What’s wrong with saying “spending money?!”

However you’ve nearly committed the biggest sin of all OP. People saying they’ve just spit their tea out or woken the cat / baby up by laughing so hard - no you didn’t. Not even close. You’re treading a fine line with that OP 👆🏼

GracieLane · 21/07/2020 12:36

It was meant tongue in cheek. I know it's pretentious, that was my point

TweeterandtheMonkeyman · 21/07/2020 12:38

@GracieLane

I hate when "ies" is put on the end of everything. My DD has caught on to this. So she asks for "treaties, choccies, sweeties, crispies, cakies, fruities, toasties" etc. Drives me crazy!

I've started to dislike the word treats because I realise that it is part of weight issues and eating disorders. Treating yourself should not mean eating a family size bag of Doritos with a tub of soured cream, a multipack of mars bars, a partly frozen cheese cake, or a whole trifle, or whatever your thing is.

Oh god you would hate me 🙈😂

DH can’t stand it either 😂 I think it started when my kids were babies “drinkies ” “snick snacks“ and DH’s absolute worst - “Bacon-ey pasta” 😂

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 21/07/2020 12:38

I think 'treats' is a bit Daily Mail....

....with her locks styled in a loose bun and showcasing her pins in on-trend denim, Kelly stopped off at a bakery to buy herself some sweet treats and a hot beverage ....

TweeterandtheMonkeyman · 21/07/2020 12:40

I totally agree about treat though! And when you say no thanks to a slice of cake someone in the office will invariably say “Oooh ..are you being good?” 🤔

eggandonion · 21/07/2020 12:41

A few wee messages is a bag full of things needed for tray bakes. The Shopping is lots of bags and a list.
You get the messages, you do the shopping.

You missed out “poured her curves in to...”

I had a colleague ages ago who used to bring in "homemade treats" for the whole department a few times a month. (I should probably be relieved she didn't call them "ho-made".) I know I'm ungrateful (I never ate them, though). But the very perky way she said "treats" and the way she'd edge them toward the gentlemen in our ranks (ladies apparently don't consume calories) made it cringey. "Here boy! Treeeeeeeeeeeeeats!!"

I'm ambivalent about "snacks", but find "to snack on" annoying. Also "to munch on" and - even worse - "to nom on".

DancingInDespair · 21/07/2020 12:49

Treats is awful, but not as bad as "goodies". Goodies gives me the rage.

derxa · 21/07/2020 12:56

YADNBU OP re treats and all the other twee shit

SpeckledyHen · 21/07/2020 12:58

The Foodbank that has opened in our village asks for treats , along with all the normal stuff people donate , the millions of bags of pasta and tins of beans etc.

I think it is the obvious word to use.

silverbubbles · 21/07/2020 13:01

Treats and snack are not the same. A snack can be healthy and needed. A treat is not healthy. Perhaps use the word crap instead.

Poppyismyfavourite · 21/07/2020 13:02

@ShirleyPhallus haha I wasn't laughing, I just snorted (halfway to a laugh?). Wow I'm sexy...

@Calic0

I don’t mind the word “treats” so much, but the word “snack” makes my teeth itch for some reason. I HATE it. I do not know why.

Mind you, when people refer to chocolate as “choc” it makes me want to throw things. I might have issues...Confused

I see your 'choc' and raise you 'choc choc' as used my my SIL with her kids. 🤮
Spanglemum · 21/07/2020 13:06

My child was friends with a little girl who called pudding 'a treat'. As in 'Eat up your fish fingers or there won't be a treat.'

MessAllOver · 21/07/2020 13:08

I'm asked every five minutes for a 'snack' or a 'treat' by my toddler. Usually, "Mummy, I want a treat" or (if I don't answer immediately), "Muuummmy, Muuummmy, Muuummmy, treat, treat, treat now".

So I find both words irritating. I am trying to curb their usage in our house (and increase the use of "please") to maximise DS's chances of survival into adulthood.

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 21/07/2020 13:08

I hate treats in a cheeky breaking the diet context.
Calling a genuine special occasion a treat is fine

golddustwomen · 21/07/2020 13:10

Yep - cringe !! 'I've got some treats for after' Or even worse 'I've got some goodies for after'

Totally different but I HATE the word nap. It really irritates me and I have no idea why.

Butchyrestingface · 21/07/2020 13:11

Generally it doesn't bother me.

But there was a thread on here a couple of years ago from a woman irate that her husband wouldn't go out at stupid o'clock to buy her a "treat" (lemon flavoured sparkling water). Said delicacy would have been SUCH a "treat" for her as she was on her period.

In that context, the word really ripped my knitting.

golddustwomen · 21/07/2020 13:12

@Crackerofdoom oh god I raise you - 'dip dip' for sauce.

delilabell · 21/07/2020 13:18

I put poorly poorly on a thread once (that got deleted) I didn't know the mn hatred for that word!!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 21/07/2020 13:18

Smorgasbord is pretentious.

Thought it was Swedish grin

Swedes are pretentious, though: going round smugly living in Sweden, speaking Swedish, following Swedish culture.... They even got a vegetable named after them - how pretentious is that?! Grin Grin

Stripesgalore · 21/07/2020 13:19

Aren’t all sugary foods, baths, scented candles, magazines and days out now referred to as ‘self care’?

Poppyismyfavourite · 21/07/2020 13:20

@Butchyrestingface I LOVE the phrase "ripped my knitting" - not heard that before! Will definitely start using that one!
