"treats" - really cringey?

AIBU to find the word "treats" really cringey??

As in "oh I'm on a diet so limiting the amount of treats I eat" or "I brought some treats for the kids"...

In my mind it just really doesn't mean human food at all, it conjures up images of people knawing on a pedigree dentastix... or those disgusting meat sticks that the cats like...

*LIGHTHEARTED (obviously)! Yes I know I have too much time on my hands, but I'm still WFH and a bit bored...

better than "nom noms". As in "I bought some nom noms for the famalam"

🤮🤮🤮

romeolovedjulliet · 21/07/2020 10:50

i hate the word 'pretty' in any form or 'snuck out' ffs.

romeolovedjulliet · 21/07/2020 10:51

tummy is another one and belly button

thenightsky · 21/07/2020 10:52

'Pamper' is worse than both snack and treat (and they are awful).

zingally · 21/07/2020 10:54

Gosh, I wish I had your concerns!

WhatamessIgotinto · 21/07/2020 10:57

@zingally Did you notice that the OP put 'lighthearted' in her OP? If it's all doom and gloom you're after, there are plenty of threads on this board full of it. Or the news, that's always a good one for making everyone feel worse.

Treats doesn’t annoy me. But snacks, ugh. It’s not a snack if it’s a whole sandwich Karen.*

I find people who use the name Karen to take the piss are even more annoying and not very original.

My name is not Karen.

My dogs get treats.

PrincessMaryaBolkonskaya · 21/07/2020 10:59

@Calic0

I don’t mind the word “treats” so much, but the word “snack” makes my teeth itch for some reason. I HATE it. I do not know why.

Mind you, when people refer to chocolate as “choc” it makes me want to throw things. I might have issues...Confused

I see your choc and I raise you a hot choc Envy (not envy)
Bodgedboxdye · 21/07/2020 11:00

It doesn’t top “cheeky” that’s the worst.

I could quite happily hear “snack” and “treat” over that.

Pamper day. Foul
GatherlyGal · 21/07/2020 11:00

Treats fine for children and dogs in my opinion. I certainly cringe when loyalty cards etc talk about "treats" - how patronising.

Hoolahoop33 · 21/07/2020 11:01

It's 'drinks' and 'pre drinks' for me huns

ZaraW · 21/07/2020 11:02

I hate it. Especially when people say I have a treat everyday. It isn't a treat it's part of your diet.

oakleaffy · 21/07/2020 11:02

''Treats'' implies something that isn't regularly given, like ''Milk and Honey'' biscuits on Christmas Morning when I was a kid.
Luxuries like treats and snacks have become so commonplace now that they are rarely treats.

Sparklesocks · 21/07/2020 11:03

I don’t think food should be given ‘morality’ either way, like when people say that certain foods are ‘naughty’ or they’re being ‘bad’ by eating them. It’s food! Eat it or don’t, it doesn’t need a narrative.

Thinkingg · 21/07/2020 11:03

@rawlikesushi

You're all weird.

A snack is a light bite between meals.

A treat, in any capacity, outing or purchase or food, is a lovely reward or something special to enjoy.

I don't use either word with pets - they just get fed a range of different food items.

The word treat in general is fine. But I hate that it's become a synonym for sweet foodstuffs. It seems influenced by food marketing to me, makes people feel hard drive by if they're not constantly getting "sweet treats". Why is a cheap chocolate bar more of a treat than a fresh salad?
Poppyismyfavourite · 21/07/2020 11:04

@FortunesFave Actually even worse than "snacking on" is "snacky" as an adjective... eugh

@MintyMabel Ah I knew as soon as I pressed send on that it'd be jumped on! I don't have children yet (currently pregnant) but when I do don't worry they won't get sweets for eating their dinner!

@zingally Don't worry I do have real problems too (pregnant + feeling icky, job woes etc), just wanted a lighthearted argument/muse about semantics :)

Absolutely agree...It sounds like some 'Adult baby' role-play.

Nousernameforme · 21/07/2020 11:06

The word treat conjures up forced enjoyment. That's another word I don't like, enjoy. Oh I bet you enjoyed that, did you enjoy yourself? Envy

When at best most things are like meh and I feel like I am forced to go over the top with how wonderful I found the chocolates/experience.

Poppyismyfavourite · 21/07/2020 11:06

I think this is my first AIBU thread, it's fun! I was afraid I'd be crucified!

Those peanut sweets were actually annoyingly called Treets. Which I assume is a mash up of treat and sweets.
