Everytime I go round a friend's house and they bring out the pims I can't have it because virtually all lemonade now has sweeteners in. People say they taste like crap and gives me such a bad headache.

I wonder if people with problems with sweeteners struggle with foods

Can you eat chewing gum? Crisps? Cereals? Theres lots of food with sweeteners in that arent fizzy drinks

And have ypu isolated the sweetener? Theres no reason for example both aspartame and stevia give you the same side effects as they are different sweeteners

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 18/07/2020 21:43

@AlphaDalpha

I hate diet drinks, I find it a really struggle to buy squash without sweeteners so we tend to dilute juice now.
Sainsburies high juice range doesnt contain sweeteners, there are plenty of flavours. Also rocks, bottlegreen cordials

The only squashes that have changed are ribena and vimto. For years high juice ranges have been the only squash without sweeteners.

Really squash without sweeteners is not hard to find

Moonmelodies · 18/07/2020 21:47

Sugar is a sweetener, right?

Comefromaway · 18/07/2020 21:48

Chewing gum - no. I got cramps from sugar free mints
Crisps - I only eat ready salted crisps and have never seen sweeteners on the ingredients
I reacted to a diet brand trifle once
Cereals - I eat Weetabix & cornflakes. I don’t think they contain sweeteners

I’ve worked out I can tolerate sucralose but not aspartame, saccharin, sorbitol or acesulfame.

bruffin · 18/07/2020 21:52

Comefromaway
Prawn cocktail flavour always included artificial sweeteners in ingredients

Sugar is a sweetener, right
You know Dish was talking about artificial sweeteners.

NeverForgetYourDreams · 18/07/2020 21:52

No YANBU because my son gets poorly if has artificial flavourings and I have to spend ages ensuring he doesn't have anything with them in. I buy all things that don't say No Added Sugar

trixiebelden77 · 18/07/2020 21:54

A diabetic with a hypo a) carries nothing on them for hypos and b) found a pub with no coke and no juice?

Can only assume they’d never had a hypo before and found a very unusual pub indeed. What an unfortunate combination of events.

maddiemookins16mum · 18/07/2020 22:02

Pimms is vile. It’s like fizzy cough mixture with floating salad.

Tolleshunt · 18/07/2020 22:04

YANBU OP.

I can’t stand the taste of artificial sweeteners, they taste disgustingly bitter to me. I’m pissed off that my choice has been limited because other people - totally unrelated to me - can’t exercise self-restraint, and patronising do-gooders want to feel smug about limiting their choices.

And the idea that it’s healthier to consume sweetener rather than modest amounts of sugar is overly simplistic bullshit in the first place.

Artificial sweeteners alter the composition of gut bacteria in ways that promote ill-health - ironically one of the effects is that they induce glucose intolerance.....

I also dislike the way it’s getting harder to find kids pain relief and medication without sweeteners. I have had to give my five year old medication only rarely in her life, but on every occasion she’s had a medicine with sweetener in, she’s gone absolutely batshit hyper. I really, really do not want to be up until 4am with a drunk-acting kid every time she needs a bit of Calpol.

I don’t care if there’s a couple of grams of sugar in a 5ml spoon of Calpol because her diet is good the rest of the time, and so the odd spoonful of Calpol once every 4 or 5 months is really nothing to get concerned about. How many parents are stuffing their kids so full of sugar every single day that the powers that be have to come over all holier than thou about a teeny amount of sugar in medication? I dread having to give antibiotics several times a day (never had to give them yet), where the taste of the meds isn’t concealed in a sweet syrup, but instead I have to force my kid to swallow a rank bitter concoction so that some big wig (or Jamie Oliver) can feel smug and virtuous.

And don’t get me started on the soft drinks that have been ruined. I’m a fucking adult and I don’t take kindly to being treated as a child, thanks very much.

StrawberrySquash · 18/07/2020 22:11

Yeah, most soft drinks are now unpleasant. I rarely drank them, but when I do I want the sugar. I think we have to realise that we're not meant to drink sweet things too much, they are occasional treats. When we drink a sweetener our body expects a hit of sugar and doesn't get it and there are suggestions it messes with blood sugar and appetite suppression.

Comefromaway · 18/07/2020 22:13

Prawn cocktail flavour urgh! Can’t even stand the smell.

Frazzles are another favourite of mine. I’ve just looked and no sweeteners in them (not the healthiest list of ingredients I’ve ever seen!)

I’ve never tried gum. I check crisps and cereals and don’t eat ones with sweeteners.

Same with yogurt, shop bought desserts.... lots of things.....

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 18/07/2020 22:20

I also can’t have “cough sweets” like lockets etc and have to be careful with other over the counter medication.

noraclavicle · 18/07/2020 22:20

Even Stevia tastes grim. Fentimans doesn’t use sweeteners, or Fever Tree. But is it completely beyond the whit of manufacturers to simply use LESS sugar??

DennisTMenace · 18/07/2020 22:22

I don't react to artificial sweeteners, I just don't like the taste, particularly the after taste. Plus it in so many things now. Getting stung by Aldi cereal bars was bad enough, but Tesco put it in the tuna pasta bake sauce. I wish his plan had actually worked and thing a just had less sugar, instead of the hyper sweetness of the artificial stuff.

Macncheeseballs · 18/07/2020 22:26

Surely you can live life without drinking that kind of drink?

PhilSwagielka · 18/07/2020 22:27

I think he's a tool, but not because of Pimm's, I just find him really irritating.

Pikachubaby · 18/07/2020 22:41

Mac cheese balls, surely we can all live without sweet drinks, beer, crisps, alcohol, tea, hair straighteners, foreign holidays, gyms, pets, whatever

We do not live a live on bread and water

You can choose never to have any of the above

But does that mean we should all not have those things in our lives?

Oliversmumsarmy · 18/07/2020 22:43

Surely if your friends can afford a bottle of Pimms they can afford proper lemonade

Diverseopinions · 18/07/2020 23:33

Enerzaid are making the original taste which once was lucozade - and I believe irn-bru also. They have a website and have started manufacturing full sugar drinks in response to popular demand. They do little trial packs, too. Reviews say that the taste is a very good copy, and very refreshing.
I really miss the old Lucozade - and, like other posters, get dreadful headaches with the awful bitter substitutes to sugar. I find it annoying that manufacturers of the old brands don't even want to consider customer feedback. We should have a right to choose. Lime and soda on a pub with the sweetnered lime - disgusting.

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 18/07/2020 23:41

@Tolleshunt you might not care if your childs calpol had sugar in, but for years children with chronic health problems, who needed recurrent antibiotics/painkillers etc. had their teeth ruined by sugary medicines.

Medicines should not contain sugar. Sugar in the form of syrup/liquid is the worst form there is

Children who regularly needed antibiotics could lose all their teeth by 3 simply to stay alive. I find it shocking that we give children medicine full of sugar

Sweeteners are not bitter, they are sweet (obviously) but they do not have the same texture as sugar, they are not sticky and thats why a lot of people find they taste very different. Your bodygets confused by the sweetness but lack of sticky

I am not a fan of sweeteners, but I am even less of a fan of sugar and this thread is absolutely ridiculous with its faux concern for health when in reality people just like a sugary drink. There is no shortage of sweetener free drinks

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 18/07/2020 23:44

@pikachubaby there are many many sweetener free drinks listed on this thread. So no you dont have to live without sugary drinks.

Just some sugary drinks now contain a sweetener, if you do not like these drinks then it is probably a good idea to live without them

Worat case scenario homemade lemonade is really fucking easy to make

Therollockingrogue · 18/07/2020 23:46

Sometimes it’s nice to eat quinoa and kale.
And then there are days when you just fancy a turkey twizzler and a full fat coke. And Jamie has ruined that for all of us Sad

Busymum45 · 18/07/2020 23:49

Don't understand the Jamie Oliver thing but can't stand him !

MHisNOTaTREND · 18/07/2020 23:53

Turkey twizzlers was the straw for me! Going to the supermarket finding shelves filled of diet crap alternatives..But how anybody enjoys his shows baffles me, practically orgasming over his own food BlushGrin
