To hate going to the hairdresser

clipclop5 · 17/07/2020 16:00

I hate the small talk, hair never turns out how I want it no matter where I go and hate having to sit there for hours with nothing to do staring into a mirror. Had new highlights done yesterday and my hairline looks like a silvery tiger, they’re awful! £120 down the drain for nothing.

Anyone else?

A mobile hairdresser who comes to your house might be worth a look, OP? Not sure how they are working in the current situation though.

joyjester · 17/07/2020 16:06

Yes. .I hate going as well!

Rosapilosa · 17/07/2020 16:08

I only go to mobile/wfh hairdressers as I hate the salon experience so much

Suzie6789 · 17/07/2020 16:09

I agree, I cut my own in lockdown and I’ve paid lots of money in the past and been a lot less happy than when I did it myself for free.
I just have roots and a mid length cut, so nothing too difficult.

maybelou · 17/07/2020 16:13

I'm in the same boat! My hair's always the same now - short back and sides with the clippers and badly chopped on top at home just because I hate going, I never come out with anything I want, it's usually ridiculously expensive and it's awkward as hell on top!

I wish I could find a hairdresser I loved who really knew what to do with my hair!!

ElvisPresleysSideburns · 17/07/2020 16:16

Yes! Hate going to the hairdressers. I'd sooner visit the dentist.

LadyJaye · 17/07/2020 16:19

I hate it as well - just the amount of TIME you have to commit to something as simple as a trim.

I have long hair and only get it cut a couple of times a year to stop it looking too feral, and I resent even that.

I wish you could just drop your hair off and pick it up a few hours later, like getting shoes mended or something.

pigsDOfly · 17/07/2020 16:20

Apart from the highlights bit, I'm exactly like you OP.

I was thinking about this yesterday, as it happens. I really need to go and get a completely new cut as my hair is a mess and is constantly in my face and driving me mad.

But I really don't want to go as I hate the whole experience.

The hair washing, the talk and the false bonhomie, the vain hope that I'm going to come out looking and feeling like a new women, when I know that it's never going to be what I really wanted, that it's probably going to look like shit and cost me an arm and a leg.

I think what makes it difficult for me, as well, is that I'm very short sighted and obviously, I can't wear my glasses while having my hair done so have no idea what they're doing to me; it can be quite scary.

Being a woman of a certain age, I'm a bit worried I'll sit there not know what's happening and I'll end up with some awful old lady hair do.

I hate have my hair fiddled around with anyway.

MrsAvocet · 17/07/2020 16:20

Me too. I only go 2 or 3 times a year anyway as I hate it so much.I cut my own fringe in between. I only ever have a basic cut. I couldn't sit there for hours having it coloured or anything. I used to have a mobile hairdresser which was slighly less bad as at least I wasn't wasting time travelling to and from the salon as well, but she's retired unfortunately and I can't find anyone else.

Yeahnahmum · 17/07/2020 16:21

I hate it too. With a passion.

borntohula · 17/07/2020 16:22

I don't mind it but I always develop a sudden paranoia that I've caught nits before an appointment.

I cut my own. I can't bear staring at my own face in that mirror for 3 hours while she does what takes me under 30mins.

Every now and again I chuck a box dye on if the greys look like they are taking over.

I've no doubt that a properly coloured styled haircut looks and feels fabulous. But I can't justify the cost and time it takes.

Superscientist · 17/07/2020 16:28

We invested in hairdressering scissors and my partner learnt how to cut my hair. It's long so a pretty simple cut to maintain at home.
I have been to a hairdressers about 4 times in the last 15 years, only when I have decided to go for a more drastic hair cut.
I hate every second of it whether there is awkward small talk or awkward silence whilst you sit staring at yourself in mirror. I hated all the products they insisted on using to and would wash them out as soon as I got home.
Much happier with partner doing it!

dottiedodah · 17/07/2020 16:40

I could have written this post! I have been cutting /colouring my own hair for years! Many tutorials online .And have a really sharp pair of Japanese steel hairdressing scissors ,which were expensive but worth every penny!Teamed with a well known soft blonde hair lightening product and good to go! My DN thought I had been to the hairdressers and asked which one!

dottiedodah · 17/07/2020 16:42

Hairdressing scissors stowed in top secret place ,and never used for any paper cutting ,gift wrapping or anything else!

Graphista · 17/07/2020 16:43

I've not bothered for years! Cut my own hair (takes less than 5 mins now I'm practiced) and used to dye it too but I'm embracing the grey now.

I hate being touched by strangers (ocd) and The chairs are very uncomfortable (physical disability) and I hate the lengthy faff when all I want is a trim!

I used to go to one "old lady" style hairdresser who was fab, didn't faff and was cheap (£10 wet trim perfect) but she's since retired.

I don't want a wash and blow dry (I have naturally curly hair that is not good blow dried) and I don't want to be spoken down to in my 40's about how to care for my hair when I KNOW what works for me!

What I find most amusing is that on the odd occasion when I have been persuaded and present with the hair I cut myself they compliment that hairdresser...until they learn it's me! Grin

Many compliments from lay people when I've recently cut it too and some even ask how to do it themselves.

I also cut dds hair until recently, she too hates the hairdressers.

Question for any potential hairdressers reading - does the training not properly include cut and care of naturally curly hair especially when client DOESN'T want it straightened daily?

It's a pita straightening daily far easier to embrace the curl.

Walkon · 17/07/2020 16:51

@Graphista No ,training never really included curly hair, a lot of stylists find styling curly hair quite difficult. I have always said a curly client know their hair best and have probably tried every product in the market!
I love getting a client that doesn't want to talk.. because I'd prefer not to either!

lifestooshort123 · 17/07/2020 16:53

I've cut and coloured my own hair for 10 years after a succession of ghastly cuts and highlights. I snip away when it's dry, then wash and tidy it again when wet. The colour is trial and error (have lots of grey now) so put strings of different blondes in when I get the urge. I love it and have had (a few) compliments. Invest in posh scissors and look at YouTube for tips.

Scarby9 · 17/07/2020 16:57

@Walkon You could advertise yourself as a non-chatting hairdresser.

Fleamaker123 · 17/07/2020 17:00

Yes totally agree with all the above.
The time it takes. The small talk. The hair wash with the cringey head massage. More small talk. Trying to small talk above the noise of the hairdyer. The expectant smiles and looks of approval from the hairdresser when she's nearly finished. Making the right noises to say how pleased you are when most of the time you could cry cos they've lopped it off. Then the cost. To tip or not to tip? I've decided after lockdown I can manage without the hassle.

Goosefoot · 17/07/2020 17:01

I am not crazy about the hairdresser.

You might think about ditching colour treatments. It will shave a lot of time off of your appointment and save you $ too.

Finfintytint · 17/07/2020 17:03

I detest going to the hairdressers. It just takes soooo long for a simple cut. The prices where I live are pretty good so I can’t moan about that.
I’ve stuck with one stylist in the last couple of years because she doesn’t do chat and doesn’t push products.

Parker231 · 17/07/2020 17:04

I’m the opposite - I love going to the hairdressers. I go every six weeks - went this week for the first time since February. It was amazing. I love the coffee and snacks, having a head massage, catch up with my hairdresser and a good cut and blow dry. It’s my luxury pampering time.

LadyPrigsbottom · 17/07/2020 17:05

I'm about to colour my own hair for the first time since I was a teenager. If it works out well, I'm never paying for a colour again! So expensive and time consuming. Also, yes, I don't like many people enough to want to spend a whole afternoon in a stuffy, noisy salon with them. Also, I haven't had my hair cut since March. Yes, it looks shit, but no, nothing TERRIBLE has happened. So I'm not going to go quite as regularly as before. Can't wait to have mine cut though and for the length of time a cut and blow dry takes, I quite enjoy it. Was just saying to DH that the next time I get to the hairdresser (next month woo!), I'm accepting their offer of wine Grin.
