To hate going to the hairdresser

clipclop5 · 17/07/2020 16:00

I hate the small talk, hair never turns out how I want it no matter where I go and hate having to sit there for hours with nothing to do staring into a mirror. Had new highlights done yesterday and my hairline looks like a silvery tiger, they’re awful! £120 down the drain for nothing.

Anyone else?

strugglingwithlife - I missed my usual glass of wine. A bottle of water wasn’t quite the same and no snacks!

Staffy1 · 17/07/2020 18:13

I hate it too. So much so that I only go about two or three times a year and just cut my own fringe in between while the rest grows. So everyone moaning about what a state they looked in lockdown made me realise what a state I must look the whole time. I could do with going again, but hate the thought of it.

Silentplikebath · 17/07/2020 18:16

I found my mobile hairdresser by asking someone with beautiful curls who cut her hair even though I didn’t really know her. It was a bit cheeky of me but she understood my desperation!

LostaraYil · 17/07/2020 18:16

I've found my people! I hate it, have not been for a couple of years and much prefer a quick DIY trim. I always feel like hairdressers cut my hair one hair at a time, it feels like forever because I can't wait for them to be done.

Nefelibata86 · 17/07/2020 18:17

@Raimona have you found a decent curly hair salon

Mojitomogul · 17/07/2020 18:20

I now colour my own which saves time and money. But the lady who I go to for the cut is great. She works quickly and rarely talks. I said (really nicely) in my very first visit that I love coming to the salon to relax, not talk and just chill, and shes taken that to note and rarely engages in chit chat. I love it.

Grinchlywords · 17/07/2020 18:20

HATe hairdressers! Always have. Would rather go to dentist.
Loathe the primping and preening and ' products' .
Just get it cut! Let me out with it wet. It just needs to be shorter, and dyed a bit. Tho regretting that now and may just let it grow out.

tabulahrasa · 17/07/2020 18:21

I go to one that can do curls, including my rubbish fine hair ones... so I like the result of going, but I don’t actually enjoy being there.

It’s not fun or relaxing or any of those other ways people usually describe it as, it’s just a really time consuming chore.

Grinchlywords · 17/07/2020 18:22

I have found my tribe.

ManualFlusherSnot · 17/07/2020 18:23

I love the hairdressers, it’s so relaxing for me. I quite often fall asleep.

AlphabetDinosaur · 17/07/2020 18:24

I'd also rather go to the dentist. I have no desire to make small talk. I've tried so many different places and no one seems to have any good suggestions as to what to do with my hair. They always suggest the same, It always looks the same, and that's not great! My husband cut it a few weeks ago (basically in a straight line) and it looks no worse than it did before. I've only been going once a year recently as I hate it so much. I think advertising as a non chatty hair dresser is a great idea!

Raimona · 17/07/2020 18:28

Raimona have you found a decent curly hair salon
Nope. I’m not convinced they exist! How are you supposed to know unless you ring every salon and ask? (and then they still say yes even though they don’t really know anything about curly hair, and I end up with another shit haircut!)

LaGoulueRevenue · 17/07/2020 18:30

Just thinking about whether or not to tip is enough to induce a full body cringe clench. What's worse, seeming tight or offending/patronising?...argh.
Also, the lies. I sit in that chair and lie when I'm asked if I have plans that day or what I'm doing afterwards. I usually fit in an appointment on a day off when I've got time to just go home and clean my face, fiddle with the new hair. The hair appointment is usually what I'm doing that day. So I make up lies to seem less sad Grin

cologne4711 · 17/07/2020 18:33

I like the massage, especially when you get a stylist who actually takes time to do a nice one that lasts a little while rather than a perfunctory 30 seconds.

As far as I am aware they can't do blow drys at the moment (and no coffee and magazines). Years ago I used to have blow drys and I'd get home and immediately wash it, such a waste of money. I then found a hair salon where I could just have a wet cut for £15! That was a long time ago though.

MrsJBaptiste · 17/07/2020 18:35

I really don't enjoy the hairdressers 😣 I love the end result (my roots and highlights are great!) but I just wish it could all be done in silence while I read my book 🤐

And I have ringletty curly hair although it is straight for about 5 mins when wet. I just have a trim with layers put in and leave with it wet. There's no way I'm having a hairdresser dry it for me, it never goes as curly as I can do it! I just wet it agin when I get home, dry it and have the perfect salon look 😁

Beautiful3 · 17/07/2020 18:36

During lock down we looked through old and new photos. My children remarked on how beautiful my hair was, when they were very small. It was when I didn't have time to go to the hairdressers. It was long, healthy and occasionally box dyed. Compared to recent photos, my regular trips produced short and over bleached hair. By going more regularly (every 12 weeks), my hair looked worse!! Big revelation! I've decided not to return to the hair dressers for a year!

LochJessMonster · 17/07/2020 18:38

I love it! I love being pampered and having someone wash it with professional products. Then having it styled afterwards so it looks amazing. Love it.

labyrinthloafer · 17/07/2020 18:39

Yanbu, I hate it too. For a long time now a friend does it, super basic, ten mins six times a year, free.

cakeandcustard · 17/07/2020 18:43

I always thought I was some sort of freak for hating the hairdresser 😂

It takes sooo long and it doesn't matter what I say, I seem to end up with the same cut I had as a three year old.

The blow dry at the end where they simultaneously pull your hair out by the roots while blow torching your head makes me leave vowing never to return

That's why I look permanently unkempt, I've resigned to the fact I'll never to look groomed

Ginfordinner · 17/07/2020 18:44

So, don't go then.
Or go, and take a book/kindle/NintendoSwitch/iPad/whatever and say that you don't feel like talking.
A cut and colour at my hairdresser is half of what you pay. Are you in London?

GlottalStrop · 17/07/2020 18:47

Even worse than just having thick curly hair, I want it straightened. Finding someone who knows how to do a sleek blow dry and not pouffy/wavy/frizz city is the holy grail.

They're hard to find, but they do exist.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 17/07/2020 18:55

I can't do those horrid sinks. Nope. I don't wasnt a bloody head massage, 3 shampoos and 2 different conditioners. Stop dragging it out!

Haven't had my hair cut for 4 years and that was a lovely mobile hairdresser. I washed my hair so it was wet when she arrived and dried it when she left.

Even when I did used to go when I was younger I always had to tell them not to cut my fringe, because despite saying that I liked it to cover my eyebrows, guaranteed it would be cut too short and I'd look like ridiculous for the next few weeks.

strugglingwithlife · 17/07/2020 19:10

Parker231 I wish mine offered wine in "normal" times lol.

cologne4711 mine are doing blow drys.

GlottalStrop my hairdresser does a great sleek blow dry

FuckYouCorona · 17/07/2020 19:16

I hate hairdressers too. I say that as someone who grew up in the industry, trained myself, but never practised because I admit I can't cut hair. I do dye my own & DC's hair though. Problem is they don't train them properly anymore & literally anyone can set themselves up as a hairdresser with no training whatsoever. I used to go to training days or the really cheap salons when I was desperate for a cut, but last time I went I ended up catching nits. Shock Never again! My daughter does a decent enough job rather than risk that!

CharitySchmarity · 17/07/2020 19:18

I hate going to the hairdresser because I've never yet found one that believes me when I say "I want my naturally curly hair to look as curly as possible." So I usually cut my own hair now. Going to the hairdresser is not compulsory.
