To hate going to the hairdresser

I hate the small talk, hair never turns out how I want it no matter where I go and hate having to sit there for hours with nothing to do staring into a mirror. Had new highlights done yesterday and my hairline looks like a silvery tiger, they’re awful! £120 down the drain for nothing.

Anyone else?

Yep I also hate it, I don’t go very often

clipclop5 · 17/07/2020 19:32

@Ginfordinner

So, don't go then. Or go, and take a book/kindle/NintendoSwitch/iPad/whatever and say that you don't feel like talking. A cut and colour at my hairdresser is half of what you pay. Are you in London?
@Ginfordinner I hate my natural hair and wouldn’t trust myself to do it at home so not going isn’t an option. No, I’m not in London, just went to a very upmarket area of Belfast. Prices are pretty similar to that in most places here though.

Totally agree with the majority of the posters!!

I do wonder if the ones who love the chat etc realise that their hairdresser most likely does not give a fuck about their holidays, kids etc Blush

I think if you’ve been going to the same one for a while you do form a sort of friendship. A bit like a friendship with work colleagues. I really like mine and am genuinely interested to catch up with what she’s been doing. I also like the relaxation of having someone give my hair a treat whilst sitting relaxing with a magazine and a latte. I never ever read magazines at home, so I kind of catch up with what’s happening in the celeb world. I Would absolutely not attempt to cut my own hair, or colour it. It isn’t cheap going to the hairdressers, but it’s a luxury I really don’t mind paying for.

Dinosaurus86 · 17/07/2020 20:03

I guess that’s an upside of the masks. I had my haircut last week and could only see my eyes peeking over the mask in the mirror and very difficult to make small talk!

MintyCedric · 17/07/2020 20:18

Yep...I have a dry cut about once a year and the rest of the time I trim and colour it myself when I cba

Luckily I've got thick wavy hair which needs very little effort.

Having said that teenage DDs hairdresser is lovely and the cut and colour job she did for her on Tuesday is fabulous and I'm sorely tempted.

I didn’t realise so many hadn’t found a hairdresser they liked, they didn’t enjoy going and went so infrequently. Going to the hairdressers every six weeks has been one of the things I’ve missed most.

Bargainhuntbore · 17/07/2020 20:37

I only go once every 18 months. Begrudge paying £30 for a wet cut!

I like mine fine, he’s nice, and like I said he can do curls - which is a rare find.

But, it’s not enjoyable, I’m only there because I need my hair done and I go as infrequently as I can get away with.

I love going to the hairdressers. And I love my hairdresser. She's so lovely. Have a laugh with her. She is an amazing hairdresser.

Used to hate it until I found 'the one' 😂 but now it's a joy to go.

MrsSnitchnose · 17/07/2020 21:12

I love going. I've been with mine for about 6 years now and she's amazing. Always listens, gives sound advice and always tells you the cheapest place to buy any products she recommends. I've never had a bad cut/colour from her. I have an appointment tomorrow morning to have my highlights and a cut and I can't wait Smile

40somethingJBJ · 17/07/2020 21:35

I hate the whole experience. I keep my hair long, so it’s fairly low maintenance and I can trim it myself. I’ve always cut my own fringe, as hairdressers always go way shorter than I want them to. I got brave recently and took 4-5 inches off the length and I’m pretty happy with it. Thinking if colouring it myself too.

turquoise50 · 17/07/2020 22:04

I hate it! To me it's like going to the dentist or having a gynae check, lol! Also a big No Thanks From Me to manicures, pedicures, in-store make-up demos, facials, massages, or (god help me) waxing! Just NO!! Grin

Nobody ever understands, because apparently we're all supposed to love 'pampering' but I just can't stand strangers touching me, worrying that they're judging me, never being quite sure what I’m supposed to do next, the awkwardness of having something 'done' to me. How on earth do people find this pleasant or relaxing?!

I've cut my own hair at home for years. Sometimes it goes well, sometimes not. 🤷‍♀️ About once every two years I'll pluck up the courage to go to the hairdressers if I want a specific style that I’m not confident of being able to do, or if a DIY cut has gone particularly awry and is growing out badly.

But tbh the number of times I've come out of the hairdresser feeling happy with what I've got is probably significantly lower than the number of times I've fucked it up myself, so I figure I may as well just keep going. Also it saves a fortune!

Ginfordinner · 17/07/2020 22:51

I have never hated going to the hairdresser. I have one who understands my hair, and as I have been going to her for years we always have a good catch up about what is happening in our lives.

I don't have the kind of hair I can cut myself, and I go in looking like a scarecrow and come out looking polished. I don't understand the hatred, and likening it to visit to the dentist is just odd.

Alodie123 · 21/08/2020 19:30

I totally agree, I thought there might be something wrong me as I really dread the hairdressers. They totally ripped me off, quoting £100 for a full head of highlight and charging £125!
