To hate going to the hairdresser

clipclop5 · 17/07/2020 16:00

I hate the small talk, hair never turns out how I want it no matter where I go and hate having to sit there for hours with nothing to do staring into a mirror. Had new highlights done yesterday and my hairline looks like a silvery tiger, they’re awful! £120 down the drain for nothing.

Anyone else?

I could have wrote this.

I always feel awkward, guilty for having such thick hair that takes so long, and judged for how long I always leave it between forcing myself for a cut.

It’s currently an awful home dye far too dark colour that I hate but I can’t bring myself to get sorted.

Graphista · 17/07/2020 17:12

@Walkon that's appalling that curly hair isn't properly taught about!

Ugh! Oh god yes I can do without the hard sell of over priced conditioner that doesn't suit my hair too!

RedOasis · 17/07/2020 17:29

I abhor going to the hairdressers. The snobbery the feeling like I’m not good enough, feeling like I’m being botched and talked about, making mind numbing small talk, just very stressful and angst inducing for me. However .... I found the most fabulous amazing little tiny salon in a Debenhams with an amazing hairdresser who’s totally laid back and very friendly.

isabellerossignol · 17/07/2020 17:33

I don't like it much either because I just find it so so boring. But having said that, I'm always happy enough with my hair at the end of it.

If I went through all that and hated my hair at the end, I would stop going at all because it would be no loss.

KitchenConfidential · 17/07/2020 17:36

And sitting in front of a mirror for hours on end. Bloody awful.

CoRhona · 17/07/2020 17:36

Blimey, I love going! Always come out feeling like I could swish my way down the High St...but just me then, I guess!! Grin

Raimona · 17/07/2020 17:37

I’ve never had a good haircut. I was even too frightened to have my hair done for my wedding because it always looks shit. It must be lovely to walk out of a salon feeling fabulous - I always have to clip my hair up to hide it until I get home and re wash it.

saltycat · 17/07/2020 17:37

Another one here who does not like the hairdresser experience. It's worse than the dentist for me. Slight exaggeration!

I always feel unsure of myself. My hair is very very fine and I am always apologising for it. Not my fault, all the ladies in my family have similar fine hair.

Anyway, trimmed the ends by bending my head forward and trimming across during lockdown, and grew out my colour. Not impressed but will carry on.

I also have some bloody awful thing like dermatitis or psoriasis and shed flakes by the noonday. I'd be far too embarrassed to go to the hairdresser with that.

I am treating it but not much is really working, so for the foreseeable my hair will be up in a scrunchy or in a clip. I found great hairbands and they work too.

Won't be going back anytime soon. It'll have to do for now.

Trika · 17/07/2020 17:37

I hated it, I tried a mobile one and that wasn't any better so I moved to cutting my own about 3 years ago which I much prefer!

WillYouDoTheFandango · 17/07/2020 17:38

It’s just so dull. I went yesterday and also hate my highlights. But my roots were awful and I do know that in a few days the blonde won’t be so yellow and the brown won’t be so carroty so I’m holding on, hoping it softens soon.

Fatted · 17/07/2020 17:39

I hate it as well. Mainly because I have curly hair and like others have said, hair dressers have no idea what to do with it unless they have curly hair themselves.

NoddyMcPintsAlot · 17/07/2020 17:41

Another one who dislikes the hairdressers. I only require a trim 3 times but still dislike the experience. I find the sink bowls really uncomfortable on my neck and the fumes from colours and the noise of hair dryers and incessant yacking gives me a headache. Appointment tomorrow for a long over due trim and dreading it. Hoping that with reduced appointments, social distancing and everyone wearing masks it will be quiet and quick.

Graphista · 17/07/2020 17:46

This is far from the only thread on this and I've seen many similar comments on other social media and from friends and family...

So why do hairdressers persist in the very behaviour we dislike?

Even if they're not being told to their faces surely they read sm?

Parker231 · 17/07/2020 17:51

I don’t think you can generalise - some of you obviously don’t enjoy it, others including me, look forward to it and enjoy the time at the hairdressers.

Raimona · 17/07/2020 17:56

No ,training never really included curly hair, a lot of stylists find styling curly hair quite difficult
I see several others have also had bad experiences because stylists have no idea what to do with curly hair. I’ve had stylists fail to use a deep conditioner and serum then wonder why they can’t get a comb through my hair. I’ve had blunt cuts that made my hair look like a triangle and layers that were too short and made my hair look thin. I’ve had stylists refuse to cut my fringe because “you can’t have a fringe on curly hair”. I’ve been put under a drier so my hair dried like a helmet. I’ve had my hair scrunched while drying so it turned to frizz. I’ve had my hair dried without a diffuser, and been told the stylist couldn’t put a diffuser on the hairdryer because that counts as “special styling” beyond the basic cut+dry I’d paid for. I’ve had mousse applied so my curls were crispy.

Without exception they’ve all cut my hair wet then been shocked when it dried and bounced up into a random shape. On one memorable occasion the stylist blow dried my hair straight because that was literally the only way she knew how to dry hair, and as soon as she sprayed product on the finished hair the moisture made it curl up again. It’s not surprising that I hate the hairdresser when I’m basically paying someone to make me look crap and I have to go straight home to wash it out and style my hair properly.

Silentplikebath · 17/07/2020 17:59

I haven’t been to a hair salon for 10 years now and I reckon I’ve saved myself thousands of pounds by not doing something I hated. I did my own colour until I decided to grow out the grey and I have a mobile hairdresser to trim my hair every few months. The mobile hairdresser is only here for around 15-20 minutes which is just long enough for a brief chat.

If you have curly hair always ask for a stylist that also has curly or wavy hair and is prepared to do a dry cut. There are hairdressers who specialise in curly hair but you need to look for them.

cardibach · 17/07/2020 18:00

I’m confused by the posters saying it takes sooo long for a trim. I have short hair which needs a proper cut to look good. In and out in less than 30 mins including arriving, washing, cutting and drying.
I love the way it changes the way I look!

Raimona · 17/07/2020 18:00

I have literally never found one of these unicorns and when you ask they look at you like you’re nuts.

crosser62 · 17/07/2020 18:00

Hate it.
Luckily my friend is my hairdresser. She is mobile.

I go.
She cuts, little bit of chat.
40 minutes later I leave. I never have it washed, nor dried.
In...out.
It’s a lovely cut, shaped, she is good.
£15 done.

I go to her house because I can run away as soon as I’m done. I found that she wanted to hang around for another coffee as it was an hour until her next client when she came to mine..... no.

I supply cake too sometimes.
Perfect.

ZaraW · 17/07/2020 18:03

I love my hairdresser. Have been going for ten years. We have a good chat and it's nice to catch up with her.

Graphista · 17/07/2020 18:07

I’ve had blunt cuts that made my hair look like a triangle

Omg yes too many of these even when I've specified NOT to do a blunt cut

I’ve been put under a drier so my hair dried like a helmet. yep

*I’ve had my hair scrunched while drying so it turned to frizz

Silentplikebath · 17/07/2020 18:08

@Raimona look for a black, mixed race or Mediterranean hairdresser. They definitely do exist although I appreciate it depends on where you live.

Graphista · 17/07/2020 18:11

Argh posted too soon but yes to so many of those issues with curly hair

Apparently though I'm also unusual in that I don't have thick hair it's quite fine so a heavy conditioner just weighs it down! Especially if it's not rinsed out properly.

There seems to be an assumption that EVERYONE with curly hair has thick hair! Not true!

Mines quite "whispy" and always has been

If you have curly hair always ask for a stylist that also has curly or wavy hair and is prepared to do a dry cut. There are hairdressers who specialise in curly hair but you need to look for them I too am yet to find one of these and I've lived all over the country inc London! Not found a genuine one yet

strugglingwithlife · 17/07/2020 18:12

I LOVE it. Couldn't wait to get back, was really missing it for the four months they were closed. I usually go at least once every couple of weeks cos I have really unmanageable hair that I can't do a thing with. Although that said, it's definitely not as enjoyable now you have to wear masks and magazines and drinks have been banned

Graphista · 17/07/2020 18:13

@Silentplikebath but Afro-Caribbean hair is not the same as mine so those hairdressers don't know either - I've actually tried that route and have tried hairdressers that specialise in Afro Caribbean hair but they were more used to dealing with thicker more robust hair than I have
