OP posts:
Standandwait · 16/07/2020 23:25

I used to be like that. Didn't say that unless people commented on how very slim I was (I didnt think I was but now I long for my effortless BMI of 18.5 Grin Anyway if I used that line it was to assure people I have lots of experience with the reality that weight is NOT simply a matter of self-control

ShinyFootball · 16/07/2020 23:25

I think it's a getting in first thing.

I used to be slim and ate well. People esp at work would always quiz me about it. Oh! You're having a roast for lunch (subsidised canteen). Are you going to eat all those potatoes? What will you have for dinner? You won't be eating again surely??!!??

Very very dull.

It's YES I eat food YES I'm not overweight. Can we please talk about something else FFS this is so dull.

Lol sorry for rant that just took me back 20 years Grin

GoingtotheWinchester · 16/07/2020 23:29

IME their idea of a lot and my idea of a lot is VASTLY different!

Broomfondle · 16/07/2020 23:40

I am one of these people. I eat like a starvation victim let loose at a children's buffet. Crisps, family bars of chocolate, whole packets of party rings, tubs of ice cream as snacks plus large portion meals. I just eat crap all the time and apart from a dog walk no exercise, literally none.
I'm very slim but I feel crap. I'm size 6 but unhealthy. Addicted to sugar. Most definitely a TOFI. Those who struggle with their weight more and watch what they eat and exercise and make an effort are much more worthy of respect and have much more to be 'smug' about than me.
I haven't sorted out an adult and responsible diet/lifestyle and I get away with it and no one judges me because of my size. But I judge myself loads and know I need to sort it to be healthier for my kids (who I cook lovely balanced nutritious meals for).
Big up to the anyone who looks after themeselves, whatever their size.

verypeckish · 16/07/2020 23:44

@2toe

You’re being unfair, some people are just skinny no matter what they eat. People often comment on how much my DH eats and he is very slim, I can’t fathom how he can consume what he does never mind stay skinny, especially at his age. What I do find interesting is people would find it really rude to comment on his consumption if he was overweight but as he’s very slim it’s fair game 🤷‍♀️
Are we married to the same person?!
MushyPeasAreTheDevilsFood · 16/07/2020 23:46

@ViciousJackdaw

Is alot quite a high calorie food then?

MinnieMousse · 16/07/2020 23:53

I have been known to say that. I eat quite a lot - I seem to eat more lunch than most of my colleagues, for example and I'm always first in the queue if someone's brought in cakes for their birthday - but don't tend to put on weight. Don't really exercise either.

I would only say it if people make a comment about my weight though, I wouldn't go round randomly declaring how lucky I was to be thin. I'm not sure how else I should respond? "Thank you" sounds wrong, as I haven't done anything except get lucky in the gene pool. I would prefer it if people didn't say anything about my weight at all. I'm not ultra thin - I'm a size 10 - so I'm not even sure why people comment.

BackforGood · 16/07/2020 23:55

What thecatneuterer said.

A relative of mine is incredibly skinny - as in she disappears when she turns sideways, and genuinely looks 'boney' and people seem to think it is acceptable to comment on it all the time, in a way that would be completely unacceptable if she were overweight rather than underweight. I've known her all her life, and she eats normal size meals, never skips meals, eats cake, chocolate, crisps, drinks alcohol etc.
Her comments are made to correct people thinking she just glances at a salad leaf once a day, as people feel so entitled to comment on her weight.

IHaveBrilloHair · 17/07/2020 00:14

An alot.

IHaveBrilloHair · 17/07/2020 00:15

SerenDippitty · 17/07/2020 00:41

It seems like people only care about other people’s bad choices when the results are visible. And don’t care about your good choices if you struggle a bit with your weight. You’re still fat and disgusting

Shmurf · 17/07/2020 01:39

Bit smug but likely something only fat people will get worked up about.

Notrightbutok · 17/07/2020 01:47

Some people say that they can eat whatever they want and stay thin and then it turns out they don't like chocolate and their favourite food is cucumber.
Grin

squeekums · 17/07/2020 02:24

What you call smug is fact for my body
I know my diet is shit, I only eat food I enjoy but i just have very lucky genetics and metabolism

Durgasarrow · 17/07/2020 03:45

god yes

squeekums · 17/07/2020 04:07

Some people say that they can eat whatever they want and stay thin and then it turns out they don't like chocolate and their favourite food is cucumber.

Tell that to the block of chocolate i murdered last night, i did stop at a qtr but it kept begging to be eaten...
truly, it begged lol

Cucumber is only edible in a white bread, slathered with butter and salt sandwich

ZaraW · 17/07/2020 05:23

I never put weight on until I was in my mid 40's. It happens.

Heyhih3 · 17/07/2020 05:27

@Iggly

People who say that are just bullshitting tbh.

I used to be like that but the reality was I didn’t eat much and did eat more exercise. I just ate mostly crap

It’s not bullshit some people don’t put weight on and eat anything they want. My best friend is like this she’s absolutely tiny but when we go out for food she eats the same as me roughly.
LaLaLanded · 17/07/2020 06:57

@Heyhih3 but that’s when you go out for food. Do you see how much she eats all the time?

People comment on how much I eat in relation to my BMI, including DP who actually lives with me! But they only see one meal a month, it’s not a full data set by any means!

I think what many people don’t realise is how BMR, TDEE and calories truly work, for them. They may feel they eat “a lot” or “whatever they want” or conversely that they eat “very healthily” but unless those terms are proxies for “calorie intake” then they don’t mean much at all, they’re just perception.

In summary I don’t believe there are many people who eat in calorie surplus on a regular basis and don’t gain weight. I eat “a lot” and a lot of “fattening foods” (keto) but when it’s calculated, it’s 2,000 calories per day which is my maintenance level. So it’s not actually a lot, objectively. I also run a fuckton, on my own, so unless you follow me on a running app, you don’t see that.

Some people are outliers, but not many at all. I certainly am not and none of the slim people I know are, even if they think they are - they all exercise/move, manage their diets in various ways and while their calories fluctuate they’re generally at maintenance level.

MynameisHappind · 17/07/2020 07:03

They really, really don't eat a lot of crap all the time if they did theyd be fat like me!
They might have a terrible diet, eat junk regularly etc but not on a diet of say a 300lbs person.
They might eat chocolate fot breakfast and coffee (600cals?) Then skip lunch and have dinner (burger, or kebab or something) at 1400-1600 cals. For a man for example, this much of calorie wont increase weight.

Or they might have 1x 600cal potato crisps bag or a 400 cal haribo bag or 7 biscuits across the day instead of finishing the whole packet in 10.minutes and then wanting more food they just graze all day so 'im always eating cant put on weight'

MynameisHappind · 17/07/2020 07:06

The tiny friend i had who ate nowadays crazy pub food portions didnt eat dinner the night before, no breakfast the day of meal and will skip dinner and maybe breakfast the morning after... where as i would eat all those meals gladly and generously.

Piratetree · 17/07/2020 07:12

I have said this before when people have commented on how skinny I am. It wasn’t me being smug, if anything the opposite.

Unfortunately age and a fourth child have now caught up with me and I’m no longer able to eat like I used to without putting on weight.

Heyhih3 · 17/07/2020 07:14

Yes I do well we are actually cousins to be honest! She’s really tiny. I’m shocked you’ve never met anybody like this. It’s just like some people put on weight more easily. It’s genes my dads sisters are small framed too lots of people are.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 17/07/2020 07:14

Haha they often don't know what a lot is. I used to think I was one if those people but when I was pg I ate A LOT and put on 4 stone ! That was a shock lol

KetoPenguin · 17/07/2020 07:15

I don't think it's smug if anything they are trying to show that they are not going to judge someone who is overweight since they both eat the same way.
