AIBU ,to not pay to return a very heavy item to China

I ordered a stepper £105 ,from amazon .it said delivery within a week.
9 weeks later ,after numerous emails to the company, asking where it was ,and it showing ,awaiting despatch on my account,
Amazon contacts me and issues me a refund.
It then shows item cancelled on the order.
Brilliant, so I buy myself a different one ,all good.
Then 2 And a bit weeks approx Later ,I open the front door to find the stepper left on my doorstep ,I’ve 3 dogs ,so they definitely Didn’t knock ,to give me chance to refuse it.
I contacted the seller ,explained I had it and said ,it’s safe ,I’ve not opened it ,I bought another Stepper with the refund,so I don’t need it ,if you paid for delivery I will send it back.
On checking the delivery details, it’s come from China.
The company is ignoring my emails ,and sending me messageS saying I have to pay to return it ,and yesterday’s message ,just said ,we are still waiting ,have you returned it yet ..

I’m happy to return it ,as I have stated ,but I’m definitely not paying to return it ,it’s bloody heavy , so AIBU???

Take it up with Amazon.

They can sort with the supplier as it looks like that’s where the communication broke down.

Veganforlife · 15/07/2020 07:41

I did that yesterday, after I realised the supplier was ignoring my emails ,and just sending ones demanding I return it ..problem is ,it is so heavy to lift ,I can’t imagine the cost involved of sending it back ...if the delivery driver had knocked on my door I could of refused it .

I would contact amazon directly via live chat and ask them if they would like to arrange collection or should you give it away as you don't have space to store it for them, it's not yours you have been refunded

mummyh2016 · 15/07/2020 07:58

If you've already had a refund is there any reason why you can't sell it/donate it to someone?
I'm all for being honest to the company you purchased from but if they're ignoring you I wouldn't go out of my way.

DuineArBith · 15/07/2020 08:00

Point out to them that these are unsolicited goods and by law you have no obligation to return them. Tell them if they don't collect the package within, say, ten days, you will bin it.

dancinfeet · 15/07/2020 08:04

Amazon are a headache with this. I ordered some hand sanitiser units for my business last week, delivery by 12th july. I paid for them and went onto the track order and the delivery date had changed to middle of august. Am now having to chase the refund and urgently find some more dispensers. Take it up with Amazon, there is no way you should have to pay postage back to china

Cadent · 15/07/2020 08:05

YANBU. It's not your problem to solve.

I have some sympathy for Chinese companies as I imagine this happens alot, but the fault is theirs for giving a delivery timeline that they could never have met.

When I buy stuff on Amazon I ignore the 1 month delivery timeframe, and expect to wait 2 months at least.

TimeWastingButFun · 15/07/2020 08:11

I usually find Amazon to be pretty fair on the customer service side so just ask them to collect it.

LadyofTheManners · 15/07/2020 08:19

Amazon are pretty good on chat or if you can now call them again.

It's not the responsibility of the buyer to pay to return, the very fact you were honest enough to tell them the item arrived is going to help you here.
Is there no option to return anymore as then Amazon sends you a paid for return label?

I had grief with a Chinese company on eBay during lockdown, they were selling something as a whole mini greenhouse, turned out it was just the cover from one, and was grossly overcharged.
They wanted the crappy thing back and I refused saying they had missold it and I wanted a refund. They offered me £2, CFs. eBay stepped in and refunded me but they kept emailing demanding it back. In the end I blocked them and eBay allowed me to do so, they also told me they would be banned for poor selling performance.

Nottherealslimshady · 15/07/2020 08:52

Contact Amazon. If they maintain you have to pay for postage say you have then block/ignore them forever more. Sell it on fb.

EmbarrassedUser · 15/07/2020 09:10

I had the same with some compost. We changed our minds, let the seller know before dispatch yet they still sent it. We were out so my teenager accepted delivery. Cost £40 to return but Amazon refunded as we provided proof that the company had sent it even though we said not to. It was still annoying as we had to make a trip to the Post Office which was unnecessary and wait the best part of an hour, all due to someone’s mistake.

malmi · 15/07/2020 09:17

I agree you should speak to Amazon directly and tell them you're happy to return the item but not pay for the return shipping.

But just on one point, these are not 'unsolicited goods', you did order them, they were delayed in shipping, and you have now effectively changed your mind. You're in a strong position because Amazon have already refunded you, but you do still have a duty of care for the goods because they're not actually yours until Amazon tells you you can dispose of them as you see fit.

Veganforlife · 15/07/2020 09:40

I will try to contact amazon again today .
The most frustrating thing was the weeks the company told me they had already sent it ,and it was on its way ,yet when I checked my account it said awaiting dispatch...

You're 50/50 here. You're 50% not U because of your ongoing problem, but you're also 50% U for ordering goods from China. We should be boycotting China.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 15/07/2020 10:24

Get on the amazon chat i have found them very helpful recently

ShellsAndSunrises · 15/07/2020 10:30

You need to talk to Amazon.

But you can’t give it away because it’s not yours; you’ve been refunded for it. And they are not unsolicited goods as you did order them. So legally you are required to take “reasonable” care of them, and give the company a “reasonable” amount of time to collect. That’s likely to be slightly longer than the usual month/2 months relied on, due to the pandemic.

Amazon tend to have great customer service, talk to them and explain and hopefully they’ll arrange a fast collection.

TwoBlueFish · 15/07/2020 10:50

Definitely deal with Amazon. I ordered a piece of flat pack furniture through Amazon (3rd party seller). It arrived with over half the pieces damaged (chips and dings), the company refused to reply after initially asking for photos (which I sent). Amazon refunded and told me I could do what I wanted with the item. I gave it away on freecycle and ordered something else.

A lot of the chinese companies lie about delivery windows so you can’t tell their goods come from china. Then once you have paid they give you a more accurate one. Honestly I wish Amazon would let us choose which country we want our goods from - German and UK companies are by far the most honest whem it comes to delivery windows.

These boycott China posts make me chuckle. I assume @TrickorTreacle will be washing clothes in a stream with rocks when their machine dies? Cooking on a campfire because ovens are out, and don't even think of refrigerating or microwaving anything.
Walking to work/shops/holidays because cars/trains/buses/planes and some bikes will all contain Chinese parts.

Why would we need to be doing that? Cant be because of Trumps friends wanting an in road on the 5g tech could it?
Wyntersdiary · 15/07/2020 11:25

you dont even need to return it as it was theyre problem, if you really want to you can contact amazon but if not just sell it or give it to someone as you have already got a refund. They cannot charge you again

Veganforlife · 15/07/2020 13:27

I’ve took my card of amazon ,just Incase they did try to charge me .
If it had said ,nine week wait for goods I would never of ordered .
