Last time I watched it was at university where I was very impressed that my IT housemate managed to download them from America before they were shown on bbc. Only took around a day an episode... 😂
20 years on... Angel has lost his soul and Spike is in town...
Eagerly awaiting Anya's entrance as my favourite character.
And how the heck was cordelia ever cast as a 16 year old 😂

Waxonwaxoff0 · 15/07/2020 07:29

I'm rewatching it too.

Unpopular opinion but I like Dawn. She's a teenager, her dad abandoned them, her sister is the slayer and that's pretty hard to live up to. Then her mum dies, then her sister dies and she is left with no family until Buffy gets brought back from the dead and suffers major depression. No wonder she's whiny, show me a teen that wouldn't be!

DefConOne · 15/07/2020 07:59

I was so excited to find this on E4. Currently watching from the beginning. It has aged really well. Tried to get my 12 year old into it but she’s not interested 😢 (it’s not anime 😒).

PrincessPain · 15/07/2020 08:08

DH has watched a few episodes here and there when I've been watching it and he still cant understand the whole Dawn thing.

Wheres Dawn?
She's not been invented yet.
What?
You know, she doesn't exist until series 5, we've been over this.
That can't be right, you're having a laugh.

Same conversation, every time.

Runbitchrun · 15/07/2020 08:10

I rewatched it with my eldest daughter a couple of years ago, and she loved it just as much as I did.

Alaimo · 15/07/2020 08:12

I've started re-watching it a couple of weeks ago. Halfway through season 2 now. Love seasons 1-3, not as keen on the later ones.

Misskittyfantastico85 · 15/07/2020 08:12

I love it. Was a massive fan through my teenage years. I grabbed my DVDs out of the loft at the start of lockdown and got my dd11 watching it with me. She was annoyed we couldn't just watch on Prime, but I have liked the authenticity of changing the DVD

ChazP · 15/07/2020 08:14

Introducing my daughter to it (although missing out some episodes that are way too scary...!)

Am loving re-watching it.

squeekums · 15/07/2020 08:16

@Coldemort

I'm not really into vampirey stuff, Buffy is the exception. Whatever you think of Joss Wheldon now the writing was exceptional. And the hotness of Spike...
Oh Spike.... If any vampire is to take me to his lair, it better be Spike and ONLY Spike

What's wrong with Joss these days? Writing slipped or some scandal? Shame either way

unkindnessofravens · 15/07/2020 08:31

@squeekums back off, Spike's mine! Wink

Blobby10 · 15/07/2020 09:11

I rewatched all 7 seasons at the start of lockdown. Do any of you also like Supernatural? My sister got me into that - she said 'It's like Buffy but with two hot men as leads' Grin. Now I'm rewatching all my Supernatural episodes and waiting with bated breath for the new ep of S14 each week Grin

Notlostjustexploring · 15/07/2020 09:27

I watched it the first time round and watched them all again recently. You realise you are getting old when Giles is your crush, and not Angel...

Fandanglethat · 15/07/2020 09:29

I am also on a Buffy binge, but much further on than you.

I did have a mild panic I was pregnant - I have somehow managed to watch 'Once More with Feeling' just before my waters broke both times! But no baby this time thankfully!

Buffy and Spike was the best relationship.

Wishiwasincornwall · 15/07/2020 09:50

I'm watching it on All4 with my DC. I'm loving it, although I'm feeling so ancient that my youngest is the same age I was when it first came out.

Wishiwasincornwall · 15/07/2020 09:55

@Notlostjustexploring I was in year 7 when it first came out and honestly Giles was my crush then. Wish I had carried that into the real world instead of spending my teen years falling for Spikes. Grin

YippeeKayakOtherBuckets · 15/07/2020 09:58

@Thinkpinkstink

Hold tight for "Mom, mom...mom...MOM...mommy".

One of the most gut wrenching scenes in TV history.

I rewatched it all recently and even just reading your post made me well up a bit.

And I cried at the finale as well. And the end of s2.

And probably at loads of other bits if I’m honest.

Zilla1 · 15/07/2020 10:02

I remember being mildly surprised to hear James Marsters was American. Had possibly the least worst English accent by an American actor.

Which season did you like the most, OP?

squeekums · 15/07/2020 10:02
@squeekums back off, Spike's mine! Wink
I shall see you in the graveyard to fight this out lol

BreastedBoobilyToTheStairs · 15/07/2020 10:06

I made DP watch all of Buffy for the first time fairly recently Grin

It took him a while but he loved it by the end.

I forgot how wonderful James Marsters is as Spike. I listen to his Dresden Files audiobooks so am now so accustomed to hearing him speak with Harry's American accent it really threw me to see him in early episodes as Spike again before his accent settled a bit! If you'd have told me ten/fifteen years ago that I'd prefer hearing him speak without Spike's voice I'd have thought you were mad.

The acting, particularly from SMG, JM and ASH is just sublime all the way through.

ASH has some of the hardest scenes to do well. Just paragraphs of exposition and yet it seems so effortless and is still entertaining when Giles gives basically all of the background on the big bad that you need. That must have been so difficult to pull off so consistently well. He seems to draw focus without really doing anything. Just wiping his glasses or similar, yet for some reason your eye follows him. Wow.

SMG just is Buffy. She's said in interviews she found it really hard to separate herself from Buffy and I think you can really tell. The Body episode, particularly the first part where she's in the house making calls...I just weep uncontrollably every time. She's a hugely underrated actress IMO.

JM is another underrated actor. Particularly in the later seasons, the way he plays Spike is just masterful (excuse the pun Grin). It's the constantly shifting micro expressions that take his performance from good to amazing every time I've seen it, and he plays all of the (many!) different facets of Spike incredibly well. The scene in the church with the cross...

I could talk about Buffy all day! Enjoy the rewatch! Grin

Finally, somewhere this will be appreciated

Bardockgurl · 15/07/2020 11:53

I do love a good Buffy binge - must be due for one now! I love this show so much!

Haven't been able to watch The Body since the loss of my mother, pretty sure I'll miss it out this time too.

One ep that always makes me cry though is The Prom - they hand that umbrella to her and I'm a blubbing mess.

MrsNoah2020 · 15/07/2020 12:01

Love it, especially the evil Mayor and - though I know lots of people hated it - Season 4.

Fandanglethat · 15/07/2020 12:51

Wishiwasincornwall we're the same age. I also had a crush on Giles when it came out. Rewatching it I can still see why!

laurenlodge · 15/07/2020 12:55

I read somewhere Spike wasn't supposed to be involved much past series 3, but he was so well acted and such an audience favourite it stuck.

Loved him and Buffy in the later seasons and forever mad at that scene which casts such a shadow on it.

Fandanglethat · 15/07/2020 13:08

laurenlodge I think the attempted rape was incredibly well done. It really showed the motivation behind his actions, whilst making it clear he was very, very wrong. I think it was excellently done, particularly for a 'teen' drama.

CallMeOnMyCell · 15/07/2020 13:09

I love the final two episodes of season 2 where Buffy has to kill Angel (I think it’s called Becoming?). I prefer the earlier seasons as they have a lot of humour in them and it becomes quite dark in later seasons which I know is part of the show (and characters) evolving but some episodes are quite depressing to watch.
