It’s frigging BREAD!!!

I have a friend that refers to sliced bread as “toast” it’s starting to REALLY get on my nerves. Born and bred in England with absolutely no issues with the English language but can not distinguish between sliced bread and the end result of it being toasted being TWO DIFFERENT BLOODY THINGS.

“I had two toasts for breakfast”
“I have cheese toasts” (instead of cheese sandwiches).

Aaaaaaaaaarghhhh ffs , no amount of addressing it has made a difference in 15 poxy years.
@Periodprob, sounds like you need this
I forgot that we in Scotland aren't yet evolved enough to bake bread Hmm

winniestone37 · 17/07/2020 09:49

Erm yes it’s a bit odd but you know who cares love!!

verybritishproblems · 17/07/2020 11:31

I drive my DP mad when I say “I’m coming up to bed” instead of “I’m going up to bed” in my defence, it’s because he is going up and I’m ( in my bed) coming up with him Blush

verybritishproblems · 17/07/2020 11:32

In my head!!*

Yy to Toastbrot meaning toasting bread as opposed to toast, which is Toast (and was for some reason a big favourite in restaurants in the former East). To complicate matters, however, a sandwich (bread + filling) is 'ein Brot' (e.g. ein Käsebrot = a cheese sandwich) and a toasted sandwich is 'ein Sandwich'.

pollymere · 17/07/2020 22:55

It's ok if referring to toasting bread I.e. white square sandwich but otherwise no.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 18/07/2020 01:55

I beg to differ - that's like saying it's OK to refer to a teabag as a cup of tea; or, for that matter, a bag of flour as a loaf of bread.

TheVamoosh · 18/07/2020 07:21

This drives me mad - my husband is German and if I ask for/he offers to make me a sandwich, he always toasts it!

Hahaha, my DH is incapable of eating un-toasted bread as well. He even toasts the bread for picnic sandwiches. They are quite stale by the time they are eaten.

letmethinkaboutitfornow · 18/07/2020 08:12

No! You would never pass the Brit ‘toast, sliced thingy’ as bread anywhere in Europe!

Fifilafrog · 18/07/2020 08:37
@Mothership4two I like circus sized GrinGrinGrin

But I thought faux pas was pronounced for par, if not how is it pronounced? Confused
It's pronounced fo' par. Its literal translation from French is "must not"

Fifilafrog · 18/07/2020 08:50

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll

What does she call croutons?

Toasted toast-babies?

OMG 😆 😂
WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 18/07/2020 09:55

No! You would never pass the Brit ‘toast, sliced thingy’ as bread anywhere in Europe!

That's just a cultural difference, though - just because they favour fresher-baked bread, usually crustier, with a more distinctive taste, that goes rock hard at the stroke of midnight rather than our blander, softer bread that lasts a week, is neither hear nor there.

You can't make a value judgment on what is or isn't bread just based on preferences. You might have a gleaming new sports car and your neighbour has a battered old clown's car of a jalopy. Just because everybody you believe one to be far superior to the other doesn't mean that they aren't both intrinsically cars.

That said: Mmmmmmmmmm, European bread! Grin

'It's pronounced fo' par. Its literal translation from French is "must not"'

I thought it was misstep (as in 'false step')?

The first time we went to Lanzarote, the on-site shop had fresh rolls delivered every morning. They were wonderful for breakfast.

verybritishproblems · 18/07/2020 11:46

I always find bread in holiday to be really dry and crumbly, best bread I’ve had was in Bavaria, their cheese is also ❤️

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 18/07/2020 11:50

I think you need to kill her op. Stick her under the grill.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 18/07/2020 12:20

is neither hear nor there.

Just noticed my glaring typo there.

I lived in Austria for a while and their Semmeln (poppy-seed rolls) are amazing. To be eaten and savoured on the day of purchase or alternatively used in road-building or construction from the following day.

Until I changed it, I accidentally typed 'poopy' instead of 'poppy' there - couldn't be more wrong (although they are crimped off nicely in the middle) Grin

I have to go to work and late now as been caught up reading and laughing so much at the posts by you lot. I’m the same though, people whom misspell or mispronounce things are very irritating. My old work colleague bought a new jacket. Pronounced it “Burgerhouse” (sic) no you knob it’s Berghaus!! Fuck me.... it’s on the label/logo!!! The toast thing is driving me nuts now. Especially knowing their background. My Breville toaster is my friend ....I’m in love with it and couldn’t get away with half of the shit I shove between two slices without it. Buy one now. Would love to know what OP’s friend can get between her toastGrin

MsEllany · 18/07/2020 12:57
@Pobblebonk

The way we’d say “loaf of bread” she says “packet of toast” or “I need to buy toast”
Not being funny, but how haven't you battered her senseless?! Daft besom.

MsEllany · 18/07/2020 13:01

MsEllany

@Mothership4two

Needs rest bite and mischeevious. IT’S MISCHEVOUS! grin

*Oh dear - you got caught by Muphry's Law grin

It's 'mischievous' pronounced 'mis - chee - vus*

@TellingBone yes I know that's what my post says! I know it's not rest bite as well! (although I did miss out the second I in mischievous).

MrsA2015 · 18/07/2020 22:56
