Masks - GET A GRIP.

Ok.

So. Lots of whinging about masks at the moment as BoJo finally hauls his arse into gear and says that you have to wear them in the shops and on public transport.

In Catalunya where I live masks are obligatory. Every time you are in public. Including in the street. Inside and out. The exceptions are

Medical conditions (you need a paper justifying this)
When playing sport
Children under the age of 6
If eating or drinking

If you don't comply - 100 euro fine. No arguments.

Most people here were already wearing masks anyway (because we saw the horror at the beginning of the pandemic here and we know what a real lockdown is like - not allowed out at all, children locked inside for nearly 3 months, etc)

People arent whining and complaining nor imagining how they can invent aome excuse to mean that the rules don't apply to them and the overwhelming majority of people are wearing them all the time.

Tourists not so much but they getting fined. Good.

So England. PLEASE. Stop with the selfishness. Literally dozens of countries have mandatory mask wearing and citizens comply because they care about each other and don't spend their time acting entitled and "I'm all right Jack"

There are articles in the European press about this. Literally "English people are selfish - is it any wonder they are so resistant to wear masks". It's embarrassing. As a nation, as a society, it's time to grow up and just put the mask on like everyone else.

English people. You aren't special. You are starting to look like the kid who gets thw whole class detention because they just keep on breaking the rules.

Wear the mask. Please. It's for the safety of everyone.

And if you ABSOLUTELY MUST come to Spain on holiday, even more so.

@DibDibDibduh

I'm English and I haven't heard anyone moaning , or are you just looking for an argument?
You obviously haven't read any of the many whiny threads on the subject
Changednamesorry · 14/07/2020 14:51

The thing is, I believe that its not just Mumsnet.

Because British tourists here sre refusing to comply.

Most people I know who live in my neighborhood are avoiding going outside at all in the evening to try and avoid non mask wearing tourists in our narrow streets, we have completely changed our daily routine to try to minimize being out at the time when tourists are out the most.

And unfortunately, the overwhelming majority of non mask wearing tourists are English. I'm not making this up.

I have explained in English to several families (from a distance obviously) that masks are mandatory here and they risk a fine, please look around, everyone is wearing them etc... Very gently. You just get "whatever" and on one occasion "fuck of, we're on holiday".

It is embarrassing.

FWIW, I think I have commented on one thread about mask wearing.

I will avoid it as much as I can (glasses wearer / personal comfort) but I'll of course be abiding by the rules when I need to go to the shops / chemist / for my bi-monthly blood test.

No complaints about the mandate, other than what took them so bloody long!!!

greenestolives · 14/07/2020 14:52
Biscuit

Some people can't wear them. GET A GRIP yourself, and mind your own business.

Timeforanotherusername · 14/07/2020 14:53

Can I ask a question?

Are the Spanish government hiding the true number of deaths / cases to get tourists back?

All of a sudden there was no reporting of deaths and then a handful a day when Italy still has far more on a daily basis.

As for mask wearing, I live in England and most people I know are willing for it to be made mandatory.

I cancelled a holiday to Spain. So pleased I did. Really looking forward to a very low key UK one where we follow all the rules and do what any decent person does no matter what their nationality.

SoftBlocks · 14/07/2020 14:53

YANBU.

SusieOwl4 · 14/07/2020 14:54

Totally agree with you .

After watching the programme on paramedics and 111 call assessors last night it brings it home what people have been through .

I think it’s good to get used to it being the norm in case we get a winter spike.

Changednamesorry · 14/07/2020 14:54

@Butchyrestingface

Honestly, yes. Because Scotland at least seems to be following the masks advice with a lot less silliness than the English.

ChibiTotoro · 14/07/2020 14:54

Ah yet another mask thread and yet more xenophobic comments.

GoldenOmber · 14/07/2020 14:54

Of course people don’t have to like masks. Like most of us didn’t like lockdown. Grumbling about how miserable it is doesn’t mean people won’t comply with it.

The people calling them ‘muzzles’ and getting into big drama spirals about how the government’s just high on control should calm down and have a word with themselves though.

Timeforanotherusername · 14/07/2020 14:55

I think there were also German tourists that broke the rules?

Emilyontmoor · 14/07/2020 14:55

expect us to walk around like the bloody Borg, thinking and feeling nothing, It’s a bit of material that keeps others safer from your viruses, and it has helped keep deaths in the tens and hundreds in other countries. You must be a very delicate and special flower to find it such a profound threat to your being.

MissEliza · 14/07/2020 14:55

Well said @CallmeAngelina.
I was out today and saw so many people wearing masks wrongly. Also yesterday, a couple in a small shop, who wear wearing incorrectly fitting masks, thought it was ok to keep coming close to me and leaning over me. I want people to keep their distance and I'm concerned people wearing inadequate face covering will decide to abandon social distancing.

AllPlayedOut · 14/07/2020 14:55

I'm actually a little comforted by the fact that the government make things mandatory as a last resort and that people don't just say "how high governor" when asked to jump

Same here. I'd much rather live in a country where people are allowed to question officials, express their opinions without fear of consequence, and where individualism is valued

YgritteSnow · 14/07/2020 14:55

Some people can't wear them. GET A GRIP yourself, and mind your own business.

But this isn't applying to many of the moaners. And the law is everyone's business isn't it?

CM0TD · 14/07/2020 14:56

That is very rude. But the majority of English (or British, which is it?) people are not on holiday in Spain.

You are only going to see on here the posts from the thrilled, angry, scared etc. Let people talk about what concerns them.

Sakura7 · 14/07/2020 14:56

Totally agree OP.

HowFastIsTooFast · 14/07/2020 14:56

I'm just going to leave this here...

Honestly though, I appreciate that some people struggle more than others but in the grand scheme of things it's a mild inconvenience to most of us for the greater good. I saw a good analogy earlier, anyone saying they won't wear one just because they don't want to is like someone refusing to put up blackout blinds during the blitz because they like to see the stars. Dangerously egotistical.

The more that everyone does their own little bit, the sooner that everyone will benefit.

Masks - GET A GRIP.
KezQueen · 14/07/2020 14:56

I'm sure all of England will take your advice, posted on one forum, most seriously.

Timeforanotherusername · 14/07/2020 14:57

You do realise that many tourists would have lost a significant amout of money if they had not went on holiday?

I am sure some were willing it to be cancelled.

Speak to your Politicians and get us Brits banned then?

Rigamorph · 14/07/2020 14:57

Mixed messages from the government don't help. And press articles that appeared in March like 'masks not shown to decrease transmission'.
Seatbelts are uncomfortable, and I bet people moaned like hell when they were made a legal requirement - moaning about change comes naturally to a nation whose favourite pastime is discussing the latest weather Grin.
Once mask wearing is made law and people accept that it is a sensible precaution they will adjust to it.

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 14/07/2020 14:57

I'm not whining. I am just not wearing one Smile.

897654321abcvrufhfgg · 14/07/2020 14:58

I want to know why I have to wear a mask in a supermarket but it’s ok for me to come into Close contact with 150+ Children everyday Whilst working in a primary school??

DibDibDibduh · 14/07/2020 14:58

@BruceAndNosh and you obviously haven't RTWT or you would have seen my response

loobyloo1234 · 14/07/2020 14:58

YANBU - but it's too late really isn't it? Although if it saves one life, it'll be worth it
