As the thread says...U.K. and USA are all up in arms about wearing masks! Meanwhile here in Ireland and in other countries ppl just do what is asked and wear the bloody masks!! I mean WTAF do they think makes them so special? Do the numbers not speak for themselves!??

I mean they are not that bad most medical professionals wear them ALL the time pre Covid and you never heard them complain Hmm

I'm Irish and dh is Italian, I can vouch for the fact that there are definite grumbles from both of our families about wearing masks. It's not just the British.
Do you live in Italy? I do and I don't know anybody who is moaning as much as in the UK. OK, people don't want to wear them but nobody seems to be going on about their personal freedom being attacked or endlessly questioning whether it's worth it, they're just getting on with it. Mind you between the half-hearted Covid response and Brexit, the rest of Europe have pretty much given up on expecting anything good to come out of Britain at the moment!

Temple29 · 14/07/2020 13:18

I live in Ireland and mask wearing compliance is somewhere around 30% according to public health last I heard. Most people think it’s pointless and our numbers are starting to slowly creep up. In the shops you might see a couple of people wearing them but very few.

lakesidesummer · 14/07/2020 14:01

The state I'm living in has been wearing masks to shop for weeks.
It is followed very well,I haven't seen anyone without a face covering in the supermarket for ages now.
Every shop has a sign no mask, no entry.
People aren't wearing outside as much but it is usual to see them around people's necks ready to go.
I live in the USA's 3rd largest city so it isn't a single picture in the USA.
( Doesn't mean we like wearing masks of course, it is hot and uncomfortable)

LemmysAceCard · 14/07/2020 14:13

@Thewiseoneincognito

The problem is this will become a political bandwagon fuelled by social media and external influences such as Russia, China and extreme groups intent on causing societal fractions. Regardless of which side of the fence you sit, take a Moment and look at the situation as a whole, it’s a circus.

The US and UK are both very similar in how many people are selfish and have a sense of entitlement. Watch the British versions of the Karen refusing to wear a mask videos that will suddenly spring up all over social media.

The only way this will stop is either by shutting down social media platforms, banning certain social media trends or a huge spike in death rates from infections. Until then, this madness will carry on spiralling out of control and it will feel like Groundhog Day.

Ah so its just middle aged white women who will be doing this will it? The men, children, young adults etc will all do as asked and wear a mask but us middle aged women will be refusing and causing a scene in public?

Seeing as you used the Karen insult we all know which group you are aiming at.

ladylunchalot · 14/07/2020 14:21

How many times...... Scotland is doing it's own thing, stop lumping us in with England. Mask wearing has been common place here for months, we just get on with it.

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 14/07/2020 14:22

People do need to wear them.

So I agree with you that far!

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 14/07/2020 14:24

I hate people saying “Karen” because the way that stereotype behaves is as common in men as women. It’s a white person sterotype with some accuracy if used in that way, but it’s been turned into misogyny.

Montsti · 14/07/2020 14:28

YANBU - I’m in South Africa and we’ve had to wear masks in public since we were allowed out of our houses (for 3 weeks we couldn’t even go for walks) in mid April. Children from Reception upwards have to wear masks at school (my 5 year old does). I walk the dog with my mask on as does everyone else. You need to wear a mask wherever you go...

It’s far from ideal but we’re doing it to protect others. You do get used to it!

Timeforanotherusername · 14/07/2020 14:31

lady if mask wearing in Scotland was so commonplace for months why did it become mandatory last week?

I am glad Nicola Sturgeon did what she did and I am glad BJ is now doing it too.

It should have been done months ago though in both countries.

lakesidesummer · 14/07/2020 14:32

Karen seems pretty sexist, any chance we could use the male equivalent?
(If there is one)
Not thinking women are particularly against mask wearing.

Timeforanotherusername · 14/07/2020 14:33

As soon as someone uses 'Karen' in this way I lose all respect for them or the point they are trying to make.........

daysofpearlyspencer · 14/07/2020 14:46

Not sure why anyone not living in England is so invested in what the English are doing? The op is living in Ireland what's it to her whether we wear masks or not? Please all stop with the agist sexist Karen crap.

Thewiseoneincognito · 14/07/2020 14:51

@LemmysAceCard I think you misunderstood my point. I’m not saying it will only be the Karens refusing. All the focus has been on the stereotype ‘Karen’s’ refusing to wear masks. This will now become a British trend too on social media, like sheep, people will follow on and perpetuate it.

Of course the focus will be the middle aged white women because they’re the easily vilified for this type of meme and those who create the memes have an agenda against said demographic.

Timeforanotherusername · 14/07/2020 15:02

FFS please don't even go there when you are freely using the term 'Karen'.

You are encouraging this behaviour by your use of this term.

ladylunchalot · 14/07/2020 15:11

It's become mandatory but was advised from early April to wear them in enclosed spaces ie shops which I've done. It's been pretty common where I live to wear them even before it became mandatory hence why I don't understand the furore over wearing them in other countries. If wearing one means corona transmission rates will be lower than I am more than happy to do so.
Mintychoc1 · 14/07/2020 16:05

Ah lovely, another anti English thread.

I often wonder, if England is just so so awful and the English are such vile people, why to people risk their lives trying to get here? I mean, why not stay in Germany or France, or anywhere other than horrible nasty England?

And for what it’s worth, as a doctor I’ve been wearing a face mask from day 1. It’s hot and uncomfortable, so if I want to moan about it then I will. I’ll keep wearing it though, so don’t worry OP, I’ll just get on with it, I don’t think I’m special.

mollokoy · 14/07/2020 16:30

Oh yes England is just the worst place in the world and the English are the worst people. Everyone else is so GOOD and so COMPLIANT and we should be so ashamed. Just be quiet and do as we are told.

I'm not ashamed actually. Public debate is a sign of a strong civil society. I encourage everyone to air their views. Including you, OP! Grin

It is odd, all these threads telling us off from forn parts. Why do you care if English people are debating their own politics? We can't infect you over the water. Just don't let us in.

I've been wearing a mask this whole time (and often loads more PPE as doing care). But this nonsense telling people not to question their leaders must be pushed back on. Question your leaders!

Question everything!

Norugratsatall · 14/07/2020 16:43

You know, I'm so utterly sick of all the xenophobia directed against the English on these types of threads. It's fucking depressing.

Oldbutstillgotit · 14/07/2020 17:10

Earlier today I (somewhat smugly) said that everyone here in my part of Scotland was obeying . Wrong ! Just witnessed several people going into shops without masks . Polite requests from staff ignored . People on bus wearing them round their chins !?

Emeraldshamrock · 14/07/2020 17:38

It should have been done months ago though in both countries
I agree. The public received mixed messages though I think the government put it off to ensure there was stock for the professionals.

CorianderLord · 14/07/2020 17:44

Ah yes, every English person is in arms and every Irish person is fine with it.

We get it you hate England.

Thewindofmysoul · 14/07/2020 21:45

Actually @mollokoy @daysofpearlyspencer it does matter to us in Ireland what the English are doing. We have a common travel area and due to the north can’t stop English people from travelling to Ireland. So it’s very worrying to see the absolute shambles England is making of the whole coronavirus pandemic.

Even worse, we have a two week quarantine in place for those coming from abroad but I’ve heard English people with family in Ireland say they will fly via Belfast and slip over the border thus evading registering their details for quarantine.

We have started publishing information on where our latest cases originate from and there are already cases from the UK that are affecting us.

mollokoy · 14/07/2020 21:52

Sigh.

What will be undone by this year, I wonder.

MintyMabel · 15/07/2020 08:25

I’m wondering how it’s gonna work ID’ing people for booze.

“Could you briefly lower your mask so I can see your whole face, please”

It's become mandatory but was advised from early April to wear them in enclosed spaces ie shops which I've done. It's been pretty common where I live to wear them even before it became mandatory

Barely anyone wore them where I am. Scotland has not been any different to England in people’s attitudes.
