As the thread says...U.K. and USA are all up in arms about wearing masks! Meanwhile here in Ireland and in other countries ppl just do what is asked and wear the bloody masks!! I mean WTAF do they think makes them so special? Do the numbers not speak for themselves!??

I mean they are not that bad most medical professionals wear them ALL the time pre Covid and you never heard them complain Hmm

Ye I mean we are not sitting about in "the UK" bitching about what they are or arent doing in Ireland ....
Very chippy.

Aragog · 14/07/2020 08:47

I really can't get worked up,about it.
It,really does, from reading MN, feel like people I'm England seem to be some special case with little resilience when it comes to masks.

Yes, there are some people who cannot wear them for health reasons or linked to something like autism. And some may find them more difficult due to lip reading.
But this in reality should only really link to a relatively small percentage of the population not the numbers we are reading about here in MN.

Why are we so different to the rest of the world? Why do so many people here struggle with the idea of wearing one compared to people of all ages across the world?

Maybe we should have been told they were needed right from day 1 - maybe that way people would be less resistant?

Aragog · 14/07/2020 08:49

I donated blood recently and not a single one of the staff at the donation centre were wearing masks.

Every member of staff, plus lots of the donors were in masks when dd went a couple of months ago.

Timeforanotherusername · 14/07/2020 08:49

You must show your ignorance when you make seeeping statements like this........

Uk 4 countries making their own rules.

USA - 50+ states making their own rules.

Remember you see what the press chose to show you and its all very selective.

I have not seen much complaining about people wearing masks. I think most people welcome it.

I've heard of non compliance in Scotland. Not everyone is perfect up there BTW.........

Timeforanotherusername · 14/07/2020 08:50

*sweeping

Destroyedpeople · 14/07/2020 08:51

Maybe it's to do with the fact that until very recently we were being fed the line that 'face coverings are bad'.
Burka, hoodie and so on were presented as 'other' and undesirable. For a very long time. I don't think British people know how brainwashed they are.
Or Irish for that matter....

Bedroomdilemma · 14/07/2020 08:53

I’m in Ireland and granted have not been on public transport yet (having to wear a mask puts me off Grin ), but I see very few people wearing a mask here. And very very little social distancing this last weekend..,

Butchyrestingface · 14/07/2020 08:55

As the thread says...U.K. and USA are all up in arms about wearing masks! Meanwhile here in Ireland and in other countries ppl just do what is asked and wear the bloody masks!!

You mean England, don’t you?

Weird conflation for an Irish person to make.

AutumnLeavesSeptember · 14/07/2020 08:55

YANBU. It's so embarrassing to read every other thread "I can't wear a mask therefore we shouldn't do it" despite it being shown to reduce transmission therefore shortening the time we have to live with plague restrictions at all. FFS

Isthisfinallyit · 14/07/2020 08:58

Why are we so different to the rest of the world? Why do so many people here struggle with the idea of wearing one compared to people of all ages across the world?

I have a theory about that. The US and UK haven't had real hardship in their own country (on the ground) in living memory. I was brought up listening to family members tell me that they survived nazi death camps by catching and eating snails and drinking piss. Being beaten daily because their kid cried. Being a young teen having to cycle for three days to get potatoes so the younger brothers and sisters won't starve of hunger. The war plus its aftermath caused blindness in one person, loss of legs in the other plus a severe lifelong pain problem. They all felt so lucky to have survived it and taught us to always stay resilient, keep going on and keep thinking in solutions.

And then you have people in the US and UK (although I don't think I should add NI to this one) who possible can't be made uncomfortable for ten minutes by wearing a mask and their rights and their wants. It just reads as so terribly spoilt and entitled, like a bunch of toddlers.

ssd · 14/07/2020 08:58

Another Scottish voice here, everyone I know is wearing their masks and getting on with it.
So op, change your thread title from UK to England.

Rhine · 14/07/2020 08:59

@isabellerossignol

Bollocks

I donated bloody a fortnight ago and all staff were wearing face coverings and PPE.

PlaygroundReviews · 14/07/2020 09:01

Would you be including France where a bus driver was killed for asking people to wear face masks in countries that 'get on with it'?

slipperywhensparticus · 14/07/2020 09:02

I don't know anyone in real life who is moaning about wearing a mask im in England

I'm sick of the anti English sentiment on here

Infullbloom · 14/07/2020 09:02

The UK is not up in arms, there was zero fuss when they became compulsory in Scotland. It's just the English that are whinging. Point in case, there are currently 8 threads on active convos complaining about facemasks in England.

vanillandhoney · 14/07/2020 09:04

I mean they are not that bad most medical professionals wear them ALL the time pre Covid and you never heard them complain

Maybe because if you have a medical condition that means you can't wear a mask, you don't enter a profession where wearing one is compulsory? Or is that concept too difficult for you to grasp? Hmm

isabellerossignol · 14/07/2020 09:04

Bollocks

I donated bloody a fortnight ago and all staff were wearing face coverings and PPE.

Well clearly you weren't at the same session as me. I'm not saying that it's universal, I'm saying that at the blood donation session that I was at, none of the staff were wearing masks. Why would I be lying about it? I noticed because I was surprised by it.

RedskyAtnight · 14/07/2020 09:04

This feels like the outcry over compulsory seat belt wearing to me.
When that law was brought in there were all manner of people saying that seatbelts were uncomfortable; they couldn't drive with one on, they actually impeded their driving ability etc etc.

Do we hear still hear that now? No.

DappledThings · 14/07/2020 09:04

I can wear a mask, it's not a huge hardship and I've never claimed it is. But it is annoying and I don't like to see it, it looks really creepy, especially with all the patterned ones. 'm not making a fuss about it or demanding special treatment or refusing to wear one anywhere I have to be and it is mandated. But I will be quietly limiting even further the places I go where I need to wear a mask.

Hopoindown31 · 14/07/2020 09:05

English exceptionalism, i.e. being a bunch of selfish, ignorant bastards.

isabellerossignol · 14/07/2020 09:07

No mention of masks, just gloves and sanitising.

To think think here we go again...UK and US up in arm's meanwhile the Irish and other countries just get on with it!!
Destroyedpeople · 14/07/2020 09:08

Excuse me?
I am getting a bit sick of this. How dare you talk like that about 'the English'
when you would probably be tripping over yourself to prove how non racist you are with anyone else.
Bloody hypocrite.

Emeraldshamrock · 14/07/2020 09:10

I haven't been on public transport yet. I wear a mask to the supermarket or in the shopping centre.
I'm in Dublin we had the highest cases in Ireland per county and one of the highest in the area due to over population and high rise city buildings.
I'm definitely in the minority wearing a face mask.
I counted over 20 from around 200 shoppers though the majority are keeping the 2m rule.
I do think as Irish we don't feel the government is trying to control us most are aware these measures are for safety.

isabellerossignol · 14/07/2020 09:12

Bollocks

I donated bloody a fortnight ago and all staff were wearing face coverings and PPE.

Actually, I found this where it specifically says that they don't wear masks. So no, it's not bollocks and I'm not lying.

To think think here we go again...UK and US up in arm's meanwhile the Irish and other countries just get on with it!!
janeymacaronijoanie · 14/07/2020 09:13
