Will face masks make you more likely to shop and eat out?

I understand the reasons for making face masks compulsory. But I’m not sure whether I’ll want to go out into the shops or restaurants and spend money on the high streets unless I really need something specific once everyone’s faces are covered.

Will compulsory face mask make you:

YES - MORE likely to go out shopping/ eating out on the high street

NO- LESS likely to go out shopping

Nope. The combination of mask wearing and redundancy means that I shall probably never go shopping (other than food), or eat out for a long while yet, if ever.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 25/07/2020 11:59

I will be less likely to go shopping because I feel a bit claustrophobic in a mask. Of course I'll wear one but will limit shopping trips to the supermarket/any essentials I can't buy online.

The wearing of masks will have no impact on my visiting of restaurants/cafes as not relevant. We have started to eat out, but social distancing within the restaurant is key factor

Jeremyironsnothing · 25/07/2020 12:28

I'll be venturing into shops for the first time if people are wearing masks.

HeIenaDove · 26/07/2020 01:25

I just wrote this. Not bad considering i havent done it for years.

Masks are a real drag
But its all about the price tag
Now you need to do your duty.
And shop for clothes and beauty.
Dont forget about shoes.
And stuff you possibly wont use.
And you can go to the pub
Eat lots of lovely grub.
With not a mask in sight.
You can party all night.
Drinkers getting a free pass
So they can drink and fall on their arse.
Had enough of this crap
Sick of being in this trap
Up to me if i dont shop
It doesnt mean you can have a pop.
Now i play the waiting game.
But you wont make me feel shame.
I will wear a mask
But suffering in it is too big an ask

Purplepie78 · 26/07/2020 02:32

I’m not going anywhere I have to wear a mask.

morethanmeetstheeye · 26/07/2020 02:50

No. Not going to shops or restaurants unless I have no choice (clinically vulnerable)

janetmendoza · 26/07/2020 02:56

Went to the town today- in my mask- and it was heaving. Busiest I have seen it since March!

TheAirbender · 26/07/2020 07:08

That is really good news @janetmendoza - maybe the mask moaners are just on here!

AdoreTheBeach · 26/07/2020 07:17

Yes. I feel more confident going to the shop if everyone is wearing a mask CORRECTLY (ie not pulled down under their nose) and staff are behind the plastic screen. I think staff walking around the shop should wears masks or the shield.

I’m not yet up to eating out unless it’s outside.

Can’t abide the selfish twats who refuse to wear them. I suffer severe anxiety and have had to practice wearing a mask so as not to hyperventilate. Masks don’t interfere with your oxygen levels - those that feel that way, it’s your brain tricking you. It can be overcome IF YOU WANT TO. Help is there for those who need it to manage the anxiety.

Shops that didn’t ask customers to wear masks or keep social distancing or don’t sanitise trollies/baskets - I avoid them. I now actually go out of my way to support conscientious shops.

OutwardBound2016 · 26/07/2020 07:22

@janetmendoza that’s great, our local town was dead on Saturday according to a friend, she said she popped in for some essentials and didn’t hang around. We’ve had two local restaurants closed and the one we were in yesterday thinks he can survive 6 more months at current levels before they will need to close too.

Yep, I do the same. Our local Tesco have been absolutely brilliant throughout by establishing/enforcing precautions, but in a friendly but firm way - no shouting or glaring. I'm avoiding Morrisons because they have just employed arrogant bouncers at the door being nasty and unhelpful to everyone. For local shops, all those in our village (except the pharmacy) have also been really good and I'm shopping with them a lot more that pre-covid because of that.

Lunalady21 · 26/07/2020 07:33

@PenelopePitstop49

I won't be going anywhere where I have to wear one.

What an absolute crock of shit.

Totally agree ..
mccavitythethird · 26/07/2020 07:44

No, absolutely not.

FlyingPandas · 26/07/2020 08:15

Essential shopping - ie food and medical supplies only - and no leisure shopping now that masks are compulsory.

I completely get why we are being asked to wear them and that others feel safer with people wearing them. But for me there is no point in attempting any kind of non essential activity with a mask on because wearing a mask automatically makes the experience stressful. So I’ll avoid mask wearing environments if I possibly can.

morethanmeetstheeye · 26/07/2020 16:19

I don't feel that wearing a mask makes anything more stressful at all. It's just a mask. People wear them for their jobs all the time so, to me, it's all about being pragmatic and sensible. They need to be worn; it's only stressful if you make it so in your own head and they don't affect oxygen supplies to you on iota. They are a sensible precautionary step and can help save others

CurlyhairedAssassin · 26/07/2020 16:26

I've just come back from a supermarket shop after wearing a mask for the first time. I only needed a few bits but it felt very hot & humid inside my mask, even though I had a nice cotton mask on, I felt like it was in my eyeline all the time and with my hair going in front of my eyes it was a bit awkward to even see some things from some angles. Plus it was going in my mouth all the time too and sticking to it.

So it's not exactly comfortable to wear for a long time. I tell you what, though, it made me appreciate all the more all those medics who've had to wear full PPE all the time, especially in humid places like Singapore and Hong Kong.

There were quite a few people not wearing one including 2 muslim women shopping together who weren't wearing niqabs either. I had no idea if security was stopping people on the way in and asking their reason for not wearing one or not.

randomsabreuse · 26/07/2020 20:38

Went around IKEA today. Mask was tolerable, but getting annoying by the end. Biggest issue was coming downstairs it definitely affected my peripheral vision downwards. Not sure if there are types that would avoid this coz unfamiliar stairs could be a problem.

I really hate the interaction between glasses and the nose piece of the mask - not that that is a real 'problem' I just have to wear contact lenses!

HoldMyLobster · 27/07/2020 03:08

I find some masks better than others, especially when I'm wearing glasses. I tried quite a few different types before I found one that works well.

Durgasarrow · 27/07/2020 03:35

The "mask thing" will help save lives. So I hope for your sakes it is not optional.

Durgasarrow · 27/07/2020 03:37

If you don't like masks, try these--they're called neck gaitors and you can get them on Amazon. You can pull them up when you need them and leave them around your neck when you don't..

snitzelvoncrumb · 27/07/2020 03:45

How do you eat out and wear a mask?

PinkyBrain · 27/07/2020 04:49

I’ll wear one, it doesn’t bother me, I don’t have a problem following rules in general. I don’t shop for fun much but if I wanted to this wouldn’t stop me. There are bigger issues to get worked up over.

Jossen · 27/07/2020 06:47

A lot less!

Topseyt · 27/07/2020 08:10

@snitzelvoncrumb

How do you eat out and wear a mask?
You be don't. It isn't required in restaurants and cafés.
Alaimo · 27/07/2020 08:16

Yes, i am more likely to go in the shops when everyone wears a mask. The other day I went into town as I needed a couple of things from Boots. As I was wearing my mask anyway, I also popped into a couple of other shops. Don't think I would have done that otherwise. Then again, I've been wearing a mask when food shopping since April or May, so its starting to become second nature anyway.
