Will face masks make you more likely to shop and eat out?

CamDram · 14/07/2020 07:41

I understand the reasons for making face masks compulsory. But I’m not sure whether I’ll want to go out into the shops or restaurants and spend money on the high streets unless I really need something specific once everyone’s faces are covered.

Will compulsory face mask make you:

YES - MORE likely to go out shopping/ eating out on the high street

NO- LESS likely to go out shopping

Makes no difference to me at all. For as many that refuse to shop or eat out because they have to wear a mask there'll be equal numbers who couldn't care less.

BuzzButterfly7 · 18/07/2020 23:36

I refuse to shop in store when masks are compulsory. I'll do a click and collect for groceries and not buy anything else

I cant stand this government and their lack of respect for civil liberties.

maxdash · 18/07/2020 23:56

We haven't been going out at the moment and needing to wear a mask isn't making the idea any more appealing. I hasten to add that I will wear one where required though! I'm not anti mask.

We don't really physically shop so I can't see that being an issue. But no way am I going to a cafe or restaurant wearing one. Though 3 months without and I'm not missing it!

TheClitterati · 19/07/2020 00:04

Less likely to shop.

A supermarket shop is one thing. But I went to a shop today I've always wanted to go to, had to wear a mask. Couldn't rejax and browse. Came out stressed snd sweaty 15 minutes later. The mask made it an unpleasant experience. Plus dc had to wait outside.

I'm not necessarily opposed to the masks, but I will go to as few shops as possible while I have to wear one.

PinkBuffalo · 19/07/2020 00:09

@MaryShelley1818

It will make me much less likely to shop. Definitely essential food shopping only now from next week. Just when things were starting to feel a bit better too :(
Exactly this
shinyredbus · 19/07/2020 00:12

I use one - I’ve been out. It’s not an issue to me really. I’m going to central London on Monday and will have one on. Non issue for me - I went to Stratford Westfield last week and most people I say used them. Some shops wouldn’t let you in without on which was fine.

EarlLeighIndamornin · 19/07/2020 00:14

I've taken to just C&P this on every single mask thread I see....

I'm a Brit living in New York. When the mandate to wear a mask happened here for some reason it made me bridle - it made me feel my rights were being eroded and I did have a 'screw you' mentality. I mean, this is the land of the FREE after all, you think your gonna make a died in the wool Brit succumb to something so UN American? Shit me, even the Yanks ain't gonna put up with that!

BUT New York became the epicenter of this crisis. At one point we had more recorded cases per day in the city than the rest of the world.

And the latest figures are that we have 753 in hospital and 11 deaths in the entire state.

We locked down hard and fast and WE WEAR MASKS.

Go figure.

buzzbutterfly does it also annoy you that your civil liberty to drive at 70mph down residential streets has also been removed? To me the underlying principle is very similar.

timeofyourlife · 19/07/2020 09:07

It makes me want to go out less. I was going to wander around shops last weekend but I find the idea of seeing lots of people in face masks depressing/unsettling. I think it's right to wear them and I definitely would not want to put anyone at risk by not wearing one. But it's going to take a huge effort to get used to it. That said I will push myself because I think it makes more sense to try to get comfortable with where we are at rather than waiting for things to be normal.
I have been to a restaurant this weekend with staff wearing visors and it was surprisingly ok.

candycane222 · 19/07/2020 09:16

I agree, time. This is going to be with us for a while, so the more we can keep infection rates at bay, the better for everyone.

AdoreTheBeach · 19/07/2020 09:48

Shop. Yes. Provided everyone is wearing a mask

Eat out - not necessarily. I’d eat out - outside and ensure people are not sitting near us nor walking close by us when we’re seated. Eating out inside a restaurant, no not yet

Yes, not sure what being obliged to wear a mask to stop people dying has to do with civil liberties tbh.

A hell of a lot of things we're obliged to do to keep society a bit more civilised than it might otherwise be could be considered to interfere with people's 'civil liberties'.

No one is being forced to wear a mask if they find it so abhorrent; after all you can stay in your home and lockdown until it's all over if that's what you choose to do.

Personally, I want to get out and live as normally as possible. If that means I have to cover my mouth and nose so be it, as far as I'm concerned.

I don't want to die of this virus any more than I want to be mowed down by a car doing 70 on my quiet residential street as candycane222 says; it's a good analogy.

randomsabreuse · 19/07/2020 15:30

I wear a mask as per the rules in Scotland.

However, the rules are another nail in the coffin for shopping as a leisure activity. I will only be going shopping when I can avoid busy times (weekends) and am not in charge of the children (1 year old disapproves of things (glasses/masks) on my face and is very quick and determined to remove them if I get in range.

It is worth doing the odd gift shop at an outdoor attraction or buying things I actually need from a shop that lacks an effective online delivery option (IKEA, Primark).

What is not going to happen is going out for the purpose of a casual mooch around the shops in case I fancy something. Probably good for my bank balance, not so good for the high street shops... Not that I particularly loved shopping even pre Covid...

Eating out isn't fun with my DC at their current age. Definitely needs to be quick service and early evening - take away much more pleasant until DC are better trained!

HammerToFall · 19/07/2020 15:46

I have to wear one at work on a ward. I hate them, they irritate mean, they poke my eyes when I look down which I spend a lot of the day doing looking through notes etc, they stop me drinking which has made me dehydrated as I can sip on water during the day. I won't be going anywhere unless necessary I'd rather not bother.

How can shops not let you in without a mask? The rule starts from 24th July.
loulouljh · 19/07/2020 16:11

This will absolutely be the nail in the coffin for shopping centres and the like. There is no way I will go there with a mask on. I am now going to go grocery shopping online or click and collect. to avoid having to wear a mask. I see so few people wearing them here I just cannot see a massive change by Friday. I just do not see how this will inspire confidence to go out.

Alsohuman · 19/07/2020 16:25

It won’t. The first month’s trading figures will put paid to it. I give it until the beginning of September, then it’ll be reversed. Interestingly, it’s not enshrined in law and is still just guidance.

user1497207191 · 19/07/2020 16:30

Shops are private property. They're at liberty to choose who they will allow in and who they won't as long as they're not choosing on protected characteristic such as race, sex, religion, etc.

Onlythepiratesarefree · 19/07/2020 16:41

The Disney Store have already made it compulsory for shoppers to wear masks on their store. I went to my local high street for the first time today. I haven’t missed it and won’t be rushing back.

heartsonacake · 19/07/2020 16:44

goatley You don’t have automatic rights to enter a shop. They don’t have to let anyone in that they don’t want to—barring discrimination of course.

So if they don’t want you in because you’re not wearing a mask, they don’t have to let you in. Don’t like it? Wear a mask or don’t shop there.

Catspaw123 · 19/07/2020 16:46

I will be going out hardly at all unfortunately. All online shopping going forward. It will put me off, hate wearing one

Catspaw123 · 19/07/2020 16:48

Also I was out yesterday picking up some bits in Tesco and a customer shouted at me for not wearing a mask. I didn't reply but I don't have to wear one yet. Not sure but think she took a photo on her phone

candycane222 · 19/07/2020 16:50

This thread might not be the place for the discussion, but we could do with a hard think about how we ended up with an economy so dependent on people mooching about picking up expensive snacks and buying stuff they don't need, as a leisure activity. I mean I enjoy doing it myself, but not every weekend! Goodness knows how we redirect the labour and spending, and keep towns busy and enjoyable but also safer (and greener?) , but maybe it's something we should think about?

TempestHayes · 19/07/2020 16:51

So many people saying that OTHER people wearing them makes them feel uncomfortable.

I've never once been shopping and judged the sea of other people's faces as a factor in the day. "Oh, shopping was ruined today, the faces of the crowds were a bit substandard."

Odd.

I've worn a mask in shops since the beginning anyway, to avoid spreading anything I might have.

heartsonacake · 19/07/2020 16:56

If she took a photo she’s probably put it on social media (Instagram/Snapchat/Facebook/TikTok if video).
