Will face masks make you more likely to shop and eat out?

I understand the reasons for making face masks compulsory. But I’m not sure whether I’ll want to go out into the shops or restaurants and spend money on the high streets unless I really need something specific once everyone’s faces are covered.

Will compulsory face mask make you:

YES - MORE likely to go out shopping/ eating out on the high street

NO- LESS likely to go out shopping

But is it really odd to think other people might have different feelings or experience life differently to you TempestHayes.

I will wear one but completely understand feeling negatively about masks.

MayFayre · 19/07/2020 17:00

Much less likely.

I will wear one for 2 minutes to pop into a shop like the pet food store or the the butchers. I won’t wear one for any length of time so won’t be going to supermarkets, IKEA, etc.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 19/07/2020 17:05

I won't be going anywhere that requires wearing a mask. Not being able to see people's faces en masse freaks me out. I can only liken it to somebody afraid of spiders being made to stand amongst them.

To be honest SnapChat is most likely but you won’t be able to find it.

I only went in for bread and milk. Oh and the cafe was open so had a brew which felt nice and normal. It was as I headed for checkout it all went wrong

Okay. I’m not saying she was right to photograph you, I was just explaining the reason and places she might have put it if she did.

Then again, you could just be being paranoid and she didn’t take your photo at all.

bigknickersbigknockers · 19/07/2020 17:15

I will do food shopping as usual in store and will wear a mask if prpmpted. Cafes and bars as I understand it you don't need to wear masks so no problem there.

SockYarn · 19/07/2020 17:31

Masks/face coverings have been compulsory for a week now in Scotland. Took DD to our local shopping centre this morning to get a few bits and pieces in Primark and the car park was empty. There's a outside car park and a multi storey - usually by 11am the outside car park is full and the multi is filling up. Today, the multi was shut off completely and there were spaces in the outside car park.

So yes, footfall in shops has declined drastically. Although most people in the shops were wearing masks, 50% of them were doing so incorrectly. Total and utter waste of time.

If you work in a shop I'd advise you start looking for a new job, pronto.

SpnBaby1967 · 19/07/2020 17:35

I lip read......I wont be going out much because although you wouldnt notice my hearing issues (I cant still talk on a phone etc) the ambient noise of outdoor or large spaces, or a mask muffling the voice is when I rely on lip reading.

C152H · 19/07/2020 17:57

Less likely.

Are visors considered a suitable face covering for shops/public transport?

Mcmole · 19/07/2020 19:25

No, I won't be shopping while masks need to be worn. I agree they are important in combating the spread of the virus, but personally I find them claustrophobic and awkward as a glasses wearer, so will be avoiding shops for now. I've been getting all my groceries, fruit and veg, and milk delivered so the only reason I would have to go to the shops would be to browse, or for fun. There's no fun in going in with a mask on so I'll wait until things get back to normal.

In Scotland they are. It says so on the government's website.

In the rest of the UK it's not as clear - the gov.uk website talks about cloth coverings but does not explicitly say "do not wear a visor".

bengalcat · 19/07/2020 20:30

It won’t make any difference for me - apart from food shopping I’ve no plans to shop in the near future - not bothered about masks but when I shop I like to touch clothes and sniff perfumes , try make up testers in my hand etc , pick up stuff so it just won’t feel the same and if I need / want stuff I may as well do it online .
Yes to eating out though .

Mnhealth202020 · 19/07/2020 20:35

@SockYarn thanks for the information Smile

Fuckinellitsme · 19/07/2020 20:40

Less likely. I'm exempt and the one time I got on a bus without one, the comments and tuts were enough that I don't want to do it again in hurry.

Dungaree2 · 19/07/2020 20:48

Well, I'm looking forward to some quiet shopping with other facemask wearers, since all the ones who are anti-mask seem to be staying at home!

...and those who are exempt.

I've said that so many times lately I sound like a broken record.

Frokni · 19/07/2020 21:08

It will most likely make me go out less. Have done a few food shops during the week for last month or so to make things more interesting. Also, everyone in masks is unsettling to my kids (there's worse things of course) so will do less shopping with them- usually involves picking up treats and things for Granny (DM). will go back to LIDL once a week again as the masks (on my own face) make me feel very uneasy but I will wear them of course. I also don't want to be out and listening to people getting into arguments about said masks. I feel they should have remained optional but they should enforce using hand sanitizer and social distancing as rigorously as possible. It's too late for masks tbh. It should have started ages ago.

heartsonacake · 19/07/2020 21:10

To be honest I’m quite glad so many people are staying at home because they don’t want to wear a mask Grin

Makes shopping less congested and safer for all.

SheldonSaysSo1 · 19/07/2020 21:21

I will be shopping less for lots of reasons which I won't get into for fear of being lynched. However, one concern I do have is how people wear masks and then forego social distancing and other basic hygiene rules (thinking that a mask means you can do everything normally)

Dungaree2 · 19/07/2020 21:23

Wearing a mask reduces social distancing from two metres to one metre.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 19/07/2020 21:23

I don'y think it will make a lot of difference to shopping - have been wearing a mask anyway in shops that ask you to or where other customers seem to have less sense of social distancing, plus on public transport and in galleries.

Masks aren't required in restaurants, although staff have been wearing them in all the ones I've been in.
