Face masks. To feel that we have all been through enough....

NiknicK · 14/07/2020 04:40

And shouldn’t have to wear face masks if we don’t want to. I know it’s not officially been confirmed yet, but it’s expected to be today, and I don’t get it. If face masks truly help prevent the spreading of the virus, then why on earth wasn’t it made compulsory at the beginning of this pandemic, why now? I know you’ll all likely call me selfish but I can’t do it. I have to wear a mask for ten minutes once or twice month to collect mine and dh’s medication and I find it unbearable even for that small amount of time. They make my face itch and make me want to touch my face more, I can’t breathe properly and get panicky, they slide up as they’re too big for my face and hit my eye lids. My ds is autistic and I suspect I have some traits eg sensory issues, and the thought of having to wear these masks when I find shopping stressful enough as it is, fills me with dread. AIBU?

Yanbu I dont want to wear a muzzle. FU Boris. ah and we have a contender for the “most batshit response on a thread” thread that’s currently running...

Unescorted · 14/07/2020 07:34

I believe a virus can go in your eyes.

It is not about you catching it from some one it is to reduce the chance of you breathing it on someone. The virus is transmitted through droplets and these are caught by a mask. This means if you wear a mask you help transmitting it to other people.

If you want to reduce your chances of catching it don't touch your face, wash your hands often and thoroughly and avoid selfish cunts who don't wear a mask.

FlapAttack23 · 14/07/2020 07:34

Get over yourself. You sound like you’ve just decided to take issue with it and roll with it. Asymptotic means you don’t know about it... you’re not special and different by knowing early stages of symptoms when they show, giant bell.. by then you’d have been contagious for a while 🙄

FourTeaFallOut · 14/07/2020 07:34

Yes. There have been outbreaks in stores here. Although I imagine most people who catch covid out and about couldn't pin point where the transmission took place.

Roussette · 14/07/2020 07:34

That’s my question about ‘the science’ backing this up...where is the evidence that shopping causes transmission? Is it necessary? I think it’s clear that hospitals and care homes require masks, shopping I’m just not convinced?

So the whole of Asia and most of Europe is wrong then... Hmm

Drivingdownthe101 · 14/07/2020 07:35

If you don't like it, don't go out - that's basically the choice you have from now on

Yeah this is it basically. I won’t be going out. Not because I don’t ‘like’ it though, because I physically can’t wear one.

EstuaryBird · 14/07/2020 07:35

@Roussette

Well those ten days are fine with me as it’ll give me chance to go and spend a shed load of money on bulk buying foods my ds will need do that I don’t have to go out

Well... you see... that's the difference between being selfish and not being selfish. I'm wearing one from now. In fact, I've been wearing one in the supermarket since March.

Oh FFS. So absolutely anyone, with no check from any medical professional, can self certify that that they don’t have to wear a mask!!

These should ONLY be available via the persons GP.

I’m very claustrophobic and DH has severe asthma but we both manage to wear a mask without too much difficulty.

Tbh I’m sorry for the tiny minority of people who truly are incapable of wearing a mask because they’re going to end up lumped in with all the selfish bastards who ‘don’t want to because.........’

Unescorted · 14/07/2020 07:35

help transmitting it = help not transmitting it

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 14/07/2020 07:35

We can all smile with our eyes while wearing a mask.
try it,

JinglingHellsBells · 14/07/2020 07:36

Christ @NiknicK You have the gall to complain about sweary posts, yet YOU want to risk infecting people and killing others, by not wearing mask- or complaining about it.

What do you expect??? Did you expect people to agree with you?

You do understand you can be infectious for a while with no symptoms yet still infect and kill someone with your breath?

EstuaryBird · 14/07/2020 07:36

Sorry Rousette. I quoted the wrong post! Please ignore! Will try again...

oldmum22 · 14/07/2020 07:36

Just wear the mask , it wont be forever.

The material masks are easier to wear IMHO, find something that works for you .

JSW642 · 14/07/2020 07:36

@PeppaPigMakesMeGrrrrr

Just wear the face covering while you do the shopping ffs. It's not a big ask. Alternatively, come and join my colleagues and work at least a 12 hour NHS shift in full PPE, in sweltering summer temperatures, whilst attempting to care for people to the best of their ability. I count myself lucky that I only have to wear a standard medical mask for 12 hours for my job, unlike them. You'll be grateful it's just a piece of cloth for an hour or so after that.
Well this is completely different, if I worked for the NHS I'd expect to do both 12 hour shifts and wear PPE to protect people in my care. I doubt you're 2m away from everyone at all times. And how well ventilated is your hospital? My local one certainly isnt particularly well ventilated. Do your patients have perspex screens up between you and them at all times? Doubt it.
melonslicexx · 14/07/2020 07:37

Well if kids don't need to wear them in shops then it defeats the object anyway. Millions of kids not wearing them but millions of adults are. Plenty of kids go shopping with their parents!

HavingAMoan · 14/07/2020 07:38

Children under 11 are exempt from wearing them. You can also get a sunflower exemption card (to go with the lanyard) for autistic children.

lilgreen · 14/07/2020 07:38

By September they’ll probably be no queuing outside stores, so if that happens the crowds will return and you’ll be glad of a mask!

Roussette · 14/07/2020 07:38

@EstuaryBird

Oh FFS. So absolutely anyone, with no check from any medical professional, can self certify that that they don’t have to wear a mask!!

I don't know what you mean. I'm agreeing with you. Have you highlighted the wrong person's post?

If someone has an exclusion from wearing a mask from their Doctor... fine. If not, wear one!

Roussette · 14/07/2020 07:39

@EstuaryBird
No problem, sorry I posted before I saw your post!

Parker231 · 14/07/2020 07:39

With comments like these is it any wonder that the U.K. has one of the highest death rates?

Pandacub7 · 14/07/2020 07:39

For months scientists have said that there isn’t a point in wearing masks... and then they decide there is a point when the death rate has dramatically decreased. I wear a cloth mask that isn’t heavy so I don’t mind wearing it in shops. However, the timing is off.

PenelopePitstop49 · 14/07/2020 07:39

The smugness of people with health anxiety whose behaviour is now being validated has made me throw into my mouth a little.

I genuinely think the Government is trying to kill the economy.

melonslicexx · 14/07/2020 07:40

The who said asymptomatic people don't spread it last week

Would you have expected that when you signed up for the job though? It certainly wasn’t the norm to have to do before the pandemic was it. I am sure there are many nurses etc who find it very difficult and I comfortable and have Same issues as the OP but have had to adapt

Get a roll neck snood thing OP

crimsonlake · 14/07/2020 07:40

I have had to wear one in work for a few months and I hate them. It makes my job very difficult as in my role I have to speak to people all day. One of the things keeping me going was I was only wearing it in the workplace. I stay out of shops as much as possible and now this news has been confirmed I do not want to step foot in another shop.
