Face masks. To feel that we have all been through enough....

NiknicK · 14/07/2020 04:40

And shouldn’t have to wear face masks if we don’t want to. I know it’s not officially been confirmed yet, but it’s expected to be today, and I don’t get it. If face masks truly help prevent the spreading of the virus, then why on earth wasn’t it made compulsory at the beginning of this pandemic, why now? I know you’ll all likely call me selfish but I can’t do it. I have to wear a mask for ten minutes once or twice month to collect mine and dh’s medication and I find it unbearable even for that small amount of time. They make my face itch and make me want to touch my face more, I can’t breathe properly and get panicky, they slide up as they’re too big for my face and hit my eye lids. My ds is autistic and I suspect I have some traits eg sensory issues, and the thought of having to wear these masks when I find shopping stressful enough as it is, fills me with dread. AIBU?

Wear a pathetic face covering now and think you're doing anything, but didn't act earlier and go round judging people and feeling smug? Yeah you can fuck off (not you Badbadbunny! That's a general 'you' to whoever thinks a cotton scarf mid summer after the peak is anything more than performance. Just like that clapping thing. Whatevz)

Face mask = pathetic = judgey = smug =performance

You sound so angry and judgemental.

YourWinter · 17/07/2020 12:51

No, Zelda, I'm suggesting that the people flapping about the prospect of wearing a lightweight face covering might find it easier if they practise in short spells at home before using one when they go shopping. It's such a silly thing to make a fuss about. Any simple solution that may protect everyone from each other is worth trying.

randomer · 17/07/2020 16:03

I think Zelda makes very good points. This is incredibly simplistic but as an island nation, could we not have pulled up the draw bridge?

Why did flights continue, why were lorries coming to and fro when the writing was on the wall?

I agree, the masks like the clapping is a performance. But who is the audience?

ArDali1 · 17/07/2020 16:10

Maybe this will help

randomer · 17/07/2020 16:21

No its doesn't help. It is good loooking , young guy who supplements his salary by chucking out stuff like this. A while ago he was telling us all to eat loads of meat.

Exactly.

Mascotte · 17/07/2020 16:53

It's so lucky we have all these brisk types to tell us what it's silly to be upset about.

CatandtheFiddle · 17/07/2020 17:13

No, we have "types" who read the science, and understand that if we all wear face-coverings in enclosed public spaces, the risk of transmission between strangers goes down to around 1.5%

We have "types" who don't want to become seriously ill, or die.

We have "types" who think that sometimes, we have to do what we may not want to do, and would suggest that the OP is not special or an exception. We've all been through lockdown, we all want to get back to as much of "normal" as we can salvage. Wearing a face-covering in public enclosed spaces will help us all. Yes we've all been through "enough" but this is one thing that will help us get out the other side.

Chilledchablis · 17/07/2020 17:38

@CatandtheFiddle

Well said - fyi I think I must be one of those 'types' too!

mbosnz · 17/07/2020 18:07

I wear a face mask to minimise possibility of contaminating others if I'm asymptomatic. And especially with the moronic twerps who go around oblivious with any concept of social distancing being that everybody else should dance around them and their darling offspring, who come charging at them.

It appears pandemic has been cancelled. I do so hope the corona virus got the same bloody memo.

Marpan · 17/07/2020 18:12

Actually you can get child sized visors or bucket hats with visors attached.
Bucket hats are trendy right now
However I think you are being a bit of a brat, no one “likes” a face mask. Just get on with it,
You have managed to raise a child, wearing a mask is not difficult.

Brefugee · 17/07/2020 20:09

you’re naive to think we will get them back once they have been removed. I can’t fathom why anyone wouldn’t be concerned. Being worried about my liberties and being worried about the virus are not mutually exclusive

you still didn't actually outline any of these rights that have been removed apart from the right of assembly. And you know - even under the lockdown restrictions you had BLM marches and gatherings without thousands of arrests. You live in a parliamentary democracy - if you think the govt are removing your rights, you only have to put up with it for 5 years. Until you lot vote Tory again and again and again...

It's so cool how the virus can tell if we are strangers walking past each other, family, work colleagues or school kids in a bubble. It doesn't escape your scarf in minutes but slowly seeps out over hours.

Only yesterday, Matt Hancock, lovely man, was explaining how masks don't actually work if you are with someone all day so there's no point wearing them (unless you are in the nhs of course. Presumably he meant 'that manky scarf you've wrapped round your face instead of buying a medical grade mask you tight arse)

"When you're in close proximity with somebody that you have to work closely to, if you're there for a long time with them, then a mask doesn't offer that protection"

It's almost like they just make shit upu as they go along

sleepingpup · 17/07/2020 21:59

they do.

Merlin3189 · 17/07/2020 22:55

@Chilledchablis.
We're in the middle of our liberties being eroded and you're worried about a pandemic!

Get your priorities right. What the hell sort of world do you think it's going to be if we carry on like this? Life is for living, not locking yourself up for fear of the world.

First it was for three weeks, then for three months, now for a year or two - or so they say. Flu comes and goes, sometimes in a year or two, sometimes in a few months. Even tyrannies end eventually, but they often last a lot longer than any epedemic. Just look at China or N.Korea, thriving dictatorships that have already lasted a generation. I bet they ALL pop their masks on the moment the govt tells them.

Take it from one who has passed his three score and ten in the safest, most comfortable world there's ever been: if you get to my age and Covid19 is the worst problem/threat you've ever encountered, you'll be very lucky.
If you're worrying about Covid19, I'm tempted to say, "get a life", but you've already got one. So live it. Don't waste it hiding away. And don't give it up to people who want to control it. There's a pandemic of them.

Chilledchablis · 17/07/2020 23:34

@Merlin3189
Well well! Fyi I think my priorities are just fine thank you 😊 I am really not sure what people are banging on about their liberties being taken away - it has just been announced on the news that many of the restrictions are being lifted as soon as appropriate. I also find your tone just a little patronising. I am certainly not locked away in fear of Covid and as for the age thing, believe me, I am not far behind you and I am quite capable of 'getting a life' without instructions from you! Have you actually been to China and Korea? Our way of life is poles apart and I hope, always will be.

Mascotte · 17/07/2020 23:43

@marpan bucket hats are trendy? It's not the 90s

Mascotte · 17/07/2020 23:44

That was an aside.

But don't claim masking children is in anyway fashionable.

ddl1 · 17/07/2020 23:45

We won't have a life if we die of Covid 19! And if we can reduce the risk by precautions such as social distancing, mask wearing, a vaccine if and when we get it, etc., then we have LESS need to lock ourselves up altogether than if we just let the virus run rampant.

Do you also object to the government restricting people's right to drive drunk or without a license?

Stefoscope · 18/07/2020 00:04

Taken from the WHO: "I cannot say this clearly enough," said the Director-General. "Masks alone will not protect you from COVID-19."

The Government in the UK has yet to clarify how often masks should be changed. And if re-usable how often and at what temperature they should be washed at and for how long. Social distancing and regular hand sanitising I can understand; they are also less intrusive forms of disease prevention that can be the most readily undertaken by the vast majority of the population.

Although I doubt (that in reality) the Police will enforce fines for non compliance of mask wearing, they should never have been given that power in the first place.

It's sickening to think how many individuals that have been victim to assault and never previously sought medical help may be left in severe distress as a result of this measure. Similarly, if a medical condition prevents the use of a mask, why should doctors have to spend time providing exemption certificates when they could be treating the urgently ill?

Have you actually been to China and Korea? Our way of life is poles apart and I hope, always will be. Very true. Covid 19 was first detected in China Dec 2019. My brother who has lived and worked out there for there for the past 10+ years as a university professor was allowed to travel from UK to China to visit our 70 year old mother in Feb 2020. Since his return his every movement has been tracked via mobile phone and his covid 'risk level' has been downgraded from high risk to low by the CPC overnight as it suits them (he needed to deliver a speech). We don't hear from him for weeks at a time due to blocks made on e-mail and social media. Would people really cope with/want that sort of censorship in England?

Northernsoulgirl45 · 18/07/2020 00:45

I have every sympathy re the shopping op. My dd has ARFID although not yet diagnosed with autism and shopping has been a complete nightmare. Especially as dh was shielding but I couldn't fully due to shopping.
However I will be wearing a mask even though it will be uncomfortable. Think asthma and hot flushes as it is only inside shops etc.

BruceAndNosh · 18/07/2020 09:16

Do you need the Government to tell you how to wipe your own bum too?
