Face masks. To feel that we have all been through enough....

And shouldn’t have to wear face masks if we don’t want to. I know it’s not officially been confirmed yet, but it’s expected to be today, and I don’t get it. If face masks truly help prevent the spreading of the virus, then why on earth wasn’t it made compulsory at the beginning of this pandemic, why now? I know you’ll all likely call me selfish but I can’t do it. I have to wear a mask for ten minutes once or twice month to collect mine and dh’s medication and I find it unbearable even for that small amount of time. They make my face itch and make me want to touch my face more, I can’t breathe properly and get panicky, they slide up as they’re too big for my face and hit my eye lids. My ds is autistic and I suspect I have some traits eg sensory issues, and the thought of having to wear these masks when I find shopping stressful enough as it is, fills me with dread. AIBU?

Do you really think this has been done for health reasons after all this time? Or because in fact people are not flooding back to work, to shops etc so the Government thinks lets make everyone wear masks and then they will go back, return the economy to normal etc. That's the reality. I am seeing probably about 10% of people in the supermarket wearing masks currently, if that. I suspect it won't have the outcome the Government wants.

I agree with this.
Standardy · 15/07/2020 12:02

Or it could be as science has shown them to be effective.

TheAirbender · 15/07/2020 13:20

Here in Dubai the (busy) shops are packed full of people, all in masks. I’ve yet to see one person without one. If people want to shop they’ll shop with a mask.

Saw this and it made me think of this thread (not any person specifically before anyone gets on the defensive)

@Chocolatedeficitdisorder
I suspect you haven't caught anything because we have all been in lockdown and you haven't been exposed to loads of kids at school - not because of mask wearing.

pigoons · 15/07/2020 16:09

@midnightstar66
What snood do you have? My DS (age 6) has tried everything and we are struggling to find something that fits / doesn't fall down. Is your son older?

midnightstar66 · 15/07/2020 17:14

@pigoons my DD's are 7 and 10 (but small) if you position it over their face then pull up at the back from the bottom so it's twisted and the back is sitting higher on the head it fits really comfortably. I can try to get a picture next time she has it on. To just pull it up as a scarf it would just fall down. They are just cheap ones from amazon.

I hate the damn things but I’m going to wear one ..... it’s easier to breath through a mask than a ventilator and I’m thinking of my loved ones too .... why can’t everybody just see this ?

Shell4429 · 15/07/2020 17:39

@NiknicK I am exactly the same. I have a son with ASD and I am certain I have it too, although not officially diagnosed. When I go shopping or to the pharmacy the weirdness of everything makes me anxious and I feel really emotional when I get home. I honestly don’t know how I am going to cope with wearing a mask as well.

Mary54 · 15/07/2020 17:44

From Germany. We have had to wear masks for a variety of things - shopping, public transport, doctors/dentists, offices, banks etc since May. No sign of it changing. Yes its irritating. Yes, its uncomfortable. Yes, its a nuisance because you can't breath normally and your glasses steam up. But that's the same for everyone.
If you want to go out, get used to it. Reminds me of when they made seatbelts compulsory - hated them but after a while they became normal.

Mere1 · 15/07/2020 17:47

You are being unreasonable and childish. Research moves on.

Beatrice11 · 15/07/2020 17:47

YANBU. It’s completely riddiculous, I am furious about it

Agree! Myself and most of my friends will do everything we can to avoid shopping when they become mandatory
fluffiny31 · 15/07/2020 17:50

I hate masks. I have to wear them for work. It's horrid but the fabric ones are much better. But not allowed to wear them for work as I work in health. There are worse masks we have to wear and it takes me a good half an hour to practise my breathing before I feel OK in it.

YABU!! AlternativePerspective has said it all so I won't repeat. Get over yourself and stop whining.

Liketoshop · 15/07/2020 17:52

NiknicK
Try wearing them for ten hours a day as midwives - paper NHS masks that dry our faces and throats and rash on our face. But it protects us and you. Think about that

ZforZack · 15/07/2020 17:52

We didn’t need to wear a mask before now as we were all at home , distant from other people,
As we spend more time with others the need to wear a mask increase .

GottenGottenGotten · 15/07/2020 17:55

Why are you furious about it? For most people it is merely an inconvenience. People that have real issues wearing a mask are exempt.

Which would you rather, that we stayed in lockdown, or that we didn't take precautions to help prevent the spread of coronavirus? Or do you have a different option?

Zeewest · 15/07/2020 17:57

I've worn a mask every time I've left home and I wear glasses that steam up. It keeps me and other people near me safe. If WHO is right there will be a second spike bigger then the original because no one seems to be taking CV seriously anymore.

spooktrain · 15/07/2020 17:58

@022828MAN

I agree, I had to wear one for around an hour recently and I thought I was going to faint with air thirst. I really struggled to take deep breaths (psychological, not physical) so don't really know how to overcome it. I've also had a positive antibody test and although I know it's not 100% guarantee that gives immunity, I do feel like I'm probably safer without one than running the risk of fainting with one - currently pregnant.
actually new research suggests that those who develop it a second time get it worse
Thedogneedsawalk · 15/07/2020 17:59

@JSW642

I'm in Scotland, its mandatory here. I just wear one to cover my mouth not my nose unless I'm somewhere social distancing is hard. I feel way too anxious when my nose and mouth are covered and cant breathe properly and get dizzy. No one has pulled me up on the way I'm wearing it.
You sound like a selfish ignorant person. Just because no one has told you to cover your nose doesn't mean it's the right thing to leave it exposed. And you know that - because otherwise you wouldn't have posted. No one likes wearing masks - what makes you "special"? As others have suggested on this thread, either stop going out, or practise wearing one at home. Don't look like a stupid jerk.
