Why are people so competitive over what their kids eat?

Like eating a kids meal at a restaurant isn't that bad Hmm, just don't see why a lot of people are competitive over what their kids eat. Like wow your 5 year old DS eats seafood paella 👏👏

I think people feel it reflects well on their parenting skills.
Mine are extremely poor.

CoRhona · 13/07/2020 22:02

Wait til they have teenagers. They won't have finished typing before the teens will be back in the kitchen for the next round Grin

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 13/07/2020 22:03

It's the same as all competitive parenting. They think it makes them better parents.

Nix2020 · 13/07/2020 22:05

It starts with blw (which is just unnecessary) then keeps going. It's a competition basically.

sbhydrogen · 13/07/2020 22:05

It's because fussy eaters are seen as undesirable.

Fuebomba0 · 13/07/2020 22:07

Blush don't say that word around here or the CF British people don't eat X Y Z gang arrives Grin

I don't get it either. I have 2 DC, one eats very grown up "adult meals" but barely any fruit/veg. Younger is opposite, loves his fruit and veg but also much prefers chicken nuggets and pot noodles for dinner Confused neither are anything to write home about.

MynephewR · 13/07/2020 22:08

I've never understood this either Confused I think it's probably snobbery, fish fingers and chips are just soooooo common daaarling Grin

It sounds like you’re responding to a current thread where the OP has chosen her birthday choice of restaurant but her relative thinks it’s not child friendly.
I don’t understand why children, in a restaurant, should only be faced with chicken nuggets/fish fingers/sausages with chips. Why shouldn’t children eat beyond that tiny circle?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 13/07/2020 22:08

Agree. I love it when there's a McDonalds thread. Some people trip over themselves to tell you how much their DC hate McDonalds.

Boom45 · 13/07/2020 22:09

Same reason people get all excited about a child walking or talking early. Or get sniffy if you use a pram after the age of 2. Parenting is a competition to some people and, while it's natural to get all proud over the smallest things our kids do some people like their kid to do those small things better than other kids

Yeh but this constant snobbery about how food + chips is bad, when it's not ffs

I'm not at all a snob and my DC are no stranger to a happy meal but I do think it's nice that they'll eat a wide variety of food for no other reason than it means I can eat what I fancy without having to make separate meals.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 13/07/2020 22:10

As a parent who struggles with a fussy eater, I have noticed the massive judgements from plenty about what my DD will eat. Well done! Your child eats vindaloo.

I used to eat virtually everything as a child but I really struggle with food now. Just because your child eats everything now doesn’t mean that is always the case.

formerbabe · 13/07/2020 22:12

Food is a class issue in this country

AlicjaCross · 13/07/2020 22:12

I would have thought it obvious 🤔

Broad diet of foods that include spices and varied cuisines = good

Kids only eat bland, fried crap, never try anything new = bad

Mylittlepony374 · 13/07/2020 22:13

One of mine eats only beige, dry food. I've met a lot of people who seem to think this is a reflection of my poor parenting. So I think the competitive thing is the reverse- if your 3 year old loves broccoli dipped in hummous you're obviously winning at parenting.

Igotthemheavyboobs · 13/07/2020 22:13

I don't know what you mean to be honest, my 2 month old son eats a hugely varied diet, isn't that the same for everyone? His favourite is quinoa mixed with carrot shavings pomegranate seeds for the colour pop!

When did start off following the guidelines of only feeding milk but the insta pictures got boring after day 2 🤷‍♀️

mynameiscalypso · 13/07/2020 22:15

I'm interested as to why you think BLW is unnecessary? Or is it just the name which is unnecessary? I agree that it doesn't need to be a 'thing' but it's generally a lot easier than traditional weaning
emwithme · 13/07/2020 22:23

BLE was definitely necessary for us...little madam DD wouldn't let anyone spoon feed her! It was do it herself or nothing. mostly it was nothing, she much preferred boob

What gets me is when people say that sugar is bad, but this is OK because it's honey/agave/apple puree/mashed banana.

Everything in moderation is the way forward. Either that, or fancying up what you serve. DD loves breaded goujons of Atlantic Cod, baked pomme puree shapes and extruded pasta in a tomato reduction. Or fishfingers, waffles and spaghetti hoops as it's better known.

Anordinarymum · 13/07/2020 22:23

All those people who say they never go to McDonalds but strangely when you drive past - those places are always full of people with children.. and the drive -throughs too !

I suppose it's a bit like the eBay sellers who do not smoke or have pets when we are supposedly a nation of animal lovers..lol

DrCoconut · 13/07/2020 22:26

I have autistic food fussers. The number of people who have hoiked their judgy pants is amazing. So now I'm just yeah yeah your kid's favourite is moules mariniere with a side of olives and obscure crudités and my kid would eat more than a bread roll if you were his mother. Have a gold star. That said it would nice to plan meals a bit more exotic than McDonalds.

altiara · 13/07/2020 22:28

Keep them on the kids menu fur as long as possible - it’s a shock to the purse when everyone wants the seafood paella!

IKEA888 · 13/07/2020 22:29

starts with the milk only till 6 months despite the baby is plainly crying for more fans it's called sleep regression!
no it's hunger!
Then it's the feeding themselves malarkey and food is for fun crap! despite the fact they can't coordinate the food to their mouths the more mess the better patents they think they are !
Then it's the " healthy " foods only followed by the trendy food
drives me bonkers .
