The fucking seagulls have seized my garden and won't let me in it

Stupid twatting seagulls have had babies that are wandering aimlessly around my garden and I get divebombed by the parents if I dare step foot out there. Two days of gorgeous sunshine and I can't let DS play out there because they wouldn't stop flying at our heads and I genuinely think they would attack us if I hadn't gone back inside ran away screaming. Can't even let the dog out for a wee and have to put him on lead, and drag DS down the road every time he needs to go. They woke DS (who usually sleeps 7-7) up at 4am this morning, so we're all knackered and grumpy but seriously. Why are they protected?! Stupid sky rats

Do not put food out;they'll never leave

madcatladyforever · 12/07/2020 23:05

Gulls are extremely intelligent like crows, can recognise individual peoples faces and respond very well to kindness.
I had two tame ones breed in my garden every single year for 10 years until I moved house.
In return for a little bit of food they would keep the other gulls away, they never divebombed me when they had chicks and would even bring the chicks to see me if I was sitting in the garden in a chair.
Whilst the neighbours were unable to go out I could use my garden quite happily and they would hop over to see me.
They only attacked me the once, when I went out with a towel turban on my head. They didn't recognise me. I swear when I took the towel off they looked embarrased.
Animals and birds will respond according to how you treat them.

goldfinchfan · 12/07/2020 23:05

the babies are not cute and seagulls are a pest.
wait til they poo on your washing that is really hard to wash off. ugh

Lozz22 · 12/07/2020 23:06

@LillianBland

You can’t do anything because baby seagulls are cute. 😁
I second this!! Baby Seagulls are definitely cute and I'm a sucker for an injured one. Picked one up that had being purposely ran over years ago and it just sat there in my arms with its little head on my chest letting me stroke its head and neck. Don't know what happened to it cos i took it to the Vets but I'd like to think it's big and strong and flying around out there now. There's Babies on the roof next door to me and I love listening to them squawking away to each other. Mummy seagull now flies down to me when my car pulls up and sits and waits patiently until I get out and put my left over cereal that I take to work out for her to feed her Babies. I'm able to walk by her no problems when I need to make a few trips to and from my front door. I did nearly lose my packet of salmon the other week though 😅. I'm rooting for those Babies just hope some prat doesn't purposely run one of them over when they start to venture into the road. Really boils my piss when people do that.

What’s over your fences/walls ? If it’s not anyone else’s garden then why don’t you try scooping them up with a shovel and putting them over your fence/wall. That way they won’t be in your garden and can’t come back as they can’t fly. Or contact pest control to see if they can move them.
You can get spikes to put round your chimney and eaves which stop them nesting.
Although protected councils and pest control can get a licence to oil the eggs. This stops them hatching. If the eggs get removed the gulls lay another set so oiling is better as they will sit there all season on it. It also puts them off nesting there next year.

Sea gulls are tough as shit. I watched one eat a pigeon whole once Shock

SquirtleSquad · 12/07/2020 23:26

Sympathies OP my neighbours have 2 "pet" seagulls who live on their flat roof extension and they feed 3 times a day (they cook them sausages mostly). The seagulls come when they call them and they sit on their garden table with them when they eat in the garden.

They're the biggest loudest seagulls I've seen in my life and my kids are terrified of them!

I bet your neighbours loved you! Hmm
KaronAVyrus · 12/07/2020 23:33

Seagulls are a pain the arse.

cakeandchampagne · 12/07/2020 23:33

Make a few calls- maybe someone in the field would like to band them.

Greydrapex · 12/07/2020 23:34

They are fiercely protective of their babies, they won’t leave them no matter what you do. My husband was attacked last year when attempting to fix a roof.

NeutrinoWrangler · 12/07/2020 23:36

I'm surprised seagulls need protection. They'll eat anything and don't appear to be in short supply...

zwellers · 12/07/2020 23:40

Just for cherrysoup, there is not nor has ever been such a bird as a seagull. Gulls are protected because their numbers have dropped by over 25% in 10 years. Urban Gulls are doing OK but numbers on the coasts have crashed, most likely due to lack of food.

Agreed. We have a visit heron. We also have a visiting seagull. Clearly they have history because if they both happen to be here at the same time the seagull will really attack the heron. Heron is easily three times the gulls size but he always sees it off.
GuyFawkesDay · 12/07/2020 23:51

Encourage foxes?
My mate in London has this issue but once she watched the fox kill the baby seagulls they went.

Circle of life and all that?!!

NoProblem123 · 12/07/2020 23:53

Baby seagulls are cute, cute, cute Grin

And that 4am whiney noise - what’s not to love GrinGrin

They’ll be out of your garden soon and then you’ll be on here talking about your empty nest syndrome!

mumwon · 12/07/2020 23:57

pterodactyl survived - as seagulls

megletthesecond · 13/07/2020 00:01

Get someone who owns a kestrel to fly them over for a bit?

NotDavidTennant · 13/07/2020 00:13

They're devoted parents, so they won't leave you alone while the chicks are in the garden. The chicks should start flying soon though.

BlueBirdGreenFence · 13/07/2020 00:15

So glad to hear it's not just us being terrorised by dive bombing seagulls. I didn't even know this was a thing until they started swooping at me!

ThisShitDontMatter · 13/07/2020 00:42

Hate the bastards! 3am seems to be their favourite time too! Had I known (aswell as other things) this place we live was plagued by them it would have been a big fat no.

LaurieFairyCake · 13/07/2020 00:42

Amazing intelligent creatures

The babies are gorgeous

LadyGAgain · 13/07/2020 01:05

Ahhh same! .. on the lovely lawns around the Leaning Tower of Pisa- which you aren’t allowed to step on. Just 200+ tourists watching a seagull eat a live pigeon. It was disgusting! And I already had a phobia of birds!
