AIBU to think that you should always run the tap for at least a few seconds before pouring a glass of water?

Please help me settle an argument with DP!

I'm fed up with being handed lukewarm glasses of water. Run the tap for freshness and coolness surely?! Say if one of us has done the washing up, the first little bit of water to come out of the cold tap is still warm and gross.

I know I'm lucky if this is one of the only niggles in my relationship... Grin Still winds me up though!

YABU- I pour water straight from the tap without waiting
YANBU - Run the tap for a few seconds first (and ideally test with finger), you complete animal!

Yanbu. In our house you get cloudy water if you don’t do this.

Coffeebiscuitsrepeat · 09/07/2020 19:56

@SunshineOutdoors I wish mine went cloudy, as it might serve as a reminder to DP 😂

I find 10+ seconds is optimal for freshness and temperature 👌🏼

QuestionableMouse · 09/07/2020 19:58

I always rinse my glass before getting a drink.

Not sure why or how it started but it's stuck.

QuestionableMouse · 09/07/2020 19:59

I also save the water and use it on my house plants.

nbee84 · 09/07/2020 19:59

I like my water fridge cold, so I keep a jug in the fridge - also helps get rid of that chloriney taste. But if I had to have it straight from the tap then definitely run for a few seconds first.

Coffeebiscuitsrepeat · 09/07/2020 19:59

Glad the general consensus is in my favour so far Grin

I reckon I run it for 5 seconds or thereabouts!

bengalcat · 09/07/2020 20:01

I do otherwise the water is not cold enough .

TheMurk · 09/07/2020 20:01

Always run the tap full blast for a good couple of seconds.

Madcats · 09/07/2020 20:02

I think you might be related to my husband! We argue about tea, too.

FizzyPink · 09/07/2020 20:03

I used to do this and DP thought I was mad. Now we have a fridge with a built in water dispenser and it upsets me greatly if he gets me a glass of water from the tap rather than an ice cold fridge glass

IAintentDead · 09/07/2020 20:03

With the old lead pipes it was essential to do this, now it really is a matter of preference.

My cold water pipe runs fairly close to the ground so water runs warm for at least 5 minutes in summer - solved by using a filter jug and keeping it in the fridge.

Coffeebiscuitsrepeat · 09/07/2020 20:03

@QuestionableMouse +1 for rinsing too. To DP, I seem like such a pedant! He likes his water at "blood temperature" and I think that is sooo weird!

OP posts:
Moonflower12 · 09/07/2020 20:06

I like it slightly cool but I think it meant to be better for you if you drink it at blood temperature? As in it's not so refreshing so you drink more and hydrate yourself more.

gutentag1 · 09/07/2020 20:08

I never ask DP to get me water or squash for this reason. I'd rather do it myself as he can't be trusted to run the tap.

wholelottahistory · 09/07/2020 20:09

Massive waste of water. Dh runs it for about 40 secs n drives me mad

Coffeebiscuitsrepeat · 09/07/2020 20:12

@wholelottahistory So you don't mind a lukewarm glass of water if you run the cold tap after using the hot? I don't think 5 seconds is a massive waste - I'd rather pay the extra few pounds a year for a cold glass of water!

OP posts:
AquarianSquirrel · 09/07/2020 20:16

Yanbu. Lukewarm water makes me feel sick. As in physically sick not as some sort of angry statement..but then 'physically sick' can be taken that way too..nvm haha

ASandwichNamedKevin · 09/07/2020 20:16

@Coffeebiscuitsrepeat I suspect @wholelottahistory means a waste on environmental grounds, I hate to see water wasted and can't abide how much my sibling wastes brushing their teeth.

But yes if I have been using the hot tap I let the cold tap run a little bit.

If you like cold water (I don't) put a jug in the fridge so you've got cold water abd are wasting less.

steff13 · 09/07/2020 20:17

We don't drink water from the tap, but I do run it for a few seconds when I'm filling up the cats' dish, or getting water for a recipe. I never thought about it before.

TimeWastingButFun · 09/07/2020 20:18

Get a fridge with a filter - lovely and cold and filtered so it tastes much nicer, I wish we'd had ours years ago. But yes with the tap I always run it first.

Coffeebiscuitsrepeat · 09/07/2020 20:20

@TimeWastingButFun Sadly we only have an under counter fridge so a bit small for one, but will add it to my future dream house list!

What sort of animal do you live with OP?! Next you're going to tell us he drink bathroom tap water. 🤣🤣

SuzieCarmichael · 09/07/2020 20:21

Save the water. It is a waste.

chasingrainbows3 · 09/07/2020 20:21

This is my pet peeve! I make my own drinks because I just can't stand it or if I remember I refill plastic bottles I've had and put water in the fridge.
