AIBU to think that you should always run the tap for at least a few seconds before pouring a glass of water?

Please help me settle an argument with DP!

I'm fed up with being handed lukewarm glasses of water. Run the tap for freshness and coolness surely?! Say if one of us has done the washing up, the first little bit of water to come out of the cold tap is still warm and gross.

I know I'm lucky if this is one of the only niggles in my relationship... Grin Still winds me up though!

YABU- I pour water straight from the tap without waiting
YANBU - Run the tap for a few seconds first (and ideally test with finger), you complete animal!

YADNBU! Nothing is worse than lukewarm water, bleeuurghh!

chasingrainbows3 · 09/07/2020 20:22

I also rinse glasses and mugs before I use them, even my own that I know are cleaned throughly. Habit I guess!

FluffyRabbitGal · 09/07/2020 20:23

It doesn’t bother me at all if I’m honest, but it drives my step-mum crazy (although she does have form for also asking for tea or coffee which is “extra hot”!)

Coffeebiscuitsrepeat · 09/07/2020 20:23

@Nutrigrainygoodness Ha ha, I haven't noticed yet but I wouldn't be surprised!

@SuzieCarmichael I use a surprisingly little amount of water IMO. I save in other areas such as only doing a wash once a week, quick showers, tap off when brushing teeth etc. So a 5 second head start for a cold glass of water a few times a day is my one luxury!

PS by "Doing a wash once a week" I meant clothes wash, not lack of personal hygiene!! 😂

@FluffyRabbitGal I bet Starbucks employees love her!

I probably overdo this out of habit. Depends a bit on the pipes though, some affect the taste I think. In Birmingham water's plentiful so I don't worry too much about waste, if I was in the south east I might think differently.

WinWinnieTheWay · 09/07/2020 20:30

It takes at least a minute for ours to run cool. DH never waits long enough wine making a drink for someone else.

Hotwaterbottlelove · 09/07/2020 20:30

I can't do this, it's wasteful. I like cold water so I put water in the fridge

fucknuckle · 09/07/2020 20:39

i have ocd. i used to rinse the glass 3 times before filling it. i’m currently up to 9 times.

i know it’s a waste of water, but i honestly can’t help it.

rosiejaune · 09/07/2020 20:46

Just keep a jug in the fridge.

MoseSchrute · 09/07/2020 20:47

You must be married to my DH. He also never fills the glass up to the top which irrationally irritates me.

Toomanyradishes · 09/07/2020 20:51

Cold water sets off my TN, in the office i used to confuse people by addding a little hot water to my glass

longtimecomin · 09/07/2020 21:02

Of course you run it for a few seconds to make sure it's fresh!!!

longtimecomin · 09/07/2020 21:03

Water at blood temperature is a deal breaker for me, LTB!!!

PlanDeRaccordement · 09/07/2020 21:11

YABU if you just run water down the drain. It’s very wasteful.

LinemanForTheCounty · 09/07/2020 21:17

LOL the water doesn't disappear forever if you run it down the drain. It just gets processed and reused same as all water. And we're paying for it so fair fucks. Yanbu OP. I live in a newbuild and still have to do this.

Youve oversimplified what happens to water going down the drain and into the sewer system. And I’m sure since to you it’s a black box where dirty water goes in and clean water comes out, that you have no idea as to the loss of water in processing, or the impact of the process on the environment.
funnelfanjo · 09/07/2020 21:24

We have a cat that likes to drink from the kitchen tap when we’re not looking. Running for a few seconds to rinse away potential cat saliva is essential.

MolyHolyGuacamole · 09/07/2020 21:37

YADNBU! Thought I was the only one who did this

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 09/07/2020 21:46

My mum used to run the "night water" out of the pipes first thing. But yes, always a few seconds before filling a glass for drinking, not necessary for filling the kettle.

ASandwichNamedKevin · 09/07/2020 21:59

@safariboot see @PlanDeRaccordement explanation re the processing.

It doesn't matter if water is plentiful in Birmingham, it still costs a lot to treat and process it.

malmi · 09/07/2020 22:08

Next time it's your turn to fetch the water hand him a cup of ice.

ifigoup · 09/07/2020 22:15

Our water is metered and I am a skinflint, plus I find it so wasteful to run the water like that. I am trying to persuade DH to at least catch it in an empty saucepan so we can save it for the garden.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 09/07/2020 23:07

I always run the tap, and rinse glass before filling it
