Anyone else looking forward to this as much as I am?

It's got to be better than the TV series. It seems a little inappropriate to release it now though

GnomeOrMistAndIceGuy · 08/07/2020 19:44

I can't wait, although I've read it starts when the plague has already killed everyone, which is disappointing (imo). I bet it won't be particularly faithful to the novel. I actually liked the terrible 90's version!

Neverendingsaga · 08/07/2020 19:45

Me me me! Tried numerous times to watch the original series but it is so bad. This looks so much better and I can't wait it is one of my favourite books, I have read it so many time!

TheShining · 08/07/2020 20:53

I liked the miniseries- but then i watched it before i read the book.

I wondered if they'd delay it a little- but it seems not!

I can't imagine Whoopi as MA tbh!

Is there a release date yet? I'm so looking forward to this.

JacobReesMogadishu · 08/07/2020 20:56

When is it out?

I love the book. Got the dvd of the previous show and couldn’t watch it, think I managed a very short time span and switched off.

TheShining · 08/07/2020 20:59

Later this year apparently!

Agree the original miniseries is not a patch on the book. Why, for example, did they try to meld Rita Blakemoor and Nadine Cross into the same character? They're nothing like each other!

OP posts:
UpToonGirl · 08/07/2020 21:09

Can't wait! Couldn't stomach the mini series but the book is in my top 5 favourites. I re-read it at the start of lockdown and it added to the feeling of unreality.

randomchap · 08/07/2020 21:13

it starts when the plague has already killed everyone

That seems to lose half the book. Some of the best passages are the little insights into peoples lives as captain trips hits.

As long as they've kept Kojak in, I'll be happy.

Neverendingsaga · 08/07/2020 21:13

Rob Lowe is not Nick Andros! I just couldn't get past that.....I think the new cast looks really good, I think Whoopi will be a really good Mother Abigail. Apparently she wanted it in the original series!

And the guy who played Randall Flag in the original...no no!

It just didn't work for me at all but then I didn't watch it until I had read the book so often that maybe that was the problem, and maybe it will be this time.

cakewench · 08/07/2020 21:17

Oh I hadn’t heard this was coming. It’s one of my favourite books so I’ll absolutely keep an eye out for it.

DullDullWeather · 08/07/2020 21:27

Didn't know it had been remade

Ty OP I will look be watching that when it comes out

TheShining · 08/07/2020 21:28

They've got (the tall sadist from OITNB- name escapes me) playing Tom Cullen.

OP posts:
TheShining · 08/07/2020 21:30

I've been on an SK binge this week actually! So far I've read:

Children of the Corn
Sometimes They Come Back

And I'm now starting The Green Mile again

The Stand is one of my all time faves.

I'm not sure about some of the casting for this new one tbh. Although do think Whoopi Goldberg will be great as MA.

Stu is completely wrong. As is Harold.

In my head Randall Flagg is Matthew McConaughey and no one could play him better although I'm sure Alexander Skaarsgard will do the whole sexy/evil thing very well Grin

Starbuggy · 08/07/2020 21:40

Can’t wait! I was a huge Stephen King fan in my teens.

I loved the 90s tv version, but I remember watching it once just after 9/11 when everything thought anthrax or biological warfare was going to happen imminently and the very beginning in the lab was hauntingly terrifying.

TheShining · 08/07/2020 21:53

Of all the things they edited from the miniseries...they kept in the "face-down-in-the-soup" scene! 😂

Love this book! Hopefully we won't be disappointed!

PintOfCoffeePlease · 08/07/2020 22:09

I didn’t know about this but I’m so excited now! I also read the book at the start of lockdown and it was a bit too accurate. My favourite SK along with It and possibly some of the Dark Tower.

BonosSigh · 08/07/2020 22:40

In my head, Flagg is dark haired and looks exactly like Michael Landon

Very excited about seeing this though I doubt it will live up to the book. I too read it at the start of the lockdown, and it did feel totally eery and really fed into the weird atmosphere of March 2020

gamerchick · 08/07/2020 22:44

It's the best time to release it. Plague/virus films seem to have shot up on popular in recent months.

You can't put the stand in a film. It's too beefy. Even the books have bits missing. The original book was longer. They took the sodomising with a gun bit out for a start.

Undead76 · 08/07/2020 22:52

The Stand is one of my favourite SK novels, and one of my all time favourite novels in general.
The original mini series was pretty bad. I always thought the guy who played Flagg was totally miscast, and the character of Harold was also miscast, as was Nadine and Frannie.
I could live with Gary Sinise as Stu Redman.
Its so hard in general to adapt SK novels to the screen, a lot of them are epic length and just don't translate well to the screen with a few exceptions (Shawshank Redemption, maybe the Green Mile, a couple of others).
I would love to see The Talisman made into a brilliant movie!

As much as people seem to like it, I always hated the Misery adaptation and HATED the casting of Kathy Bates and James Caan.

echt · 08/07/2020 22:58

I enjoyed reading the novel years ago, though find the mystical elements annoying now.

I see SK and his son will be involved in the writing - how annoyed was he about the shitshow that was Kubrick's "The Shining".

Undead76 · 08/07/2020 23:05

I read that he was always annoyed that Jack Nicholson was 'crazy' from the get go. There was none of the insidious, stealthy breakdown of the character that was in the novel. It was really the Jack Nicholson show. Not to say that there aren't some great moments of cinema in Kubricks film. It's just not Stephen King's film.

Very this!

And Fran looks like Laura Prepon, without the glasses!
