Is it cruel to throw sea monkeys away?

MIL got the the kids sea monkeys for Xmas I've only been the one bothered about them. They freak me out more than anything and can't bare the thought of bringing them to the new house.

Are these the type of pets you give away? Are they pets I don't know 🤣

I'm sorry, I'm trying to get my kids to sleep but the sedative and blunt force trauma comment has me stifling a giggle that is threatening the quiet in here Grin

JRUIN · 08/07/2020 20:31

It's almost as though all the posters equating the sea monkeys with flies, head lice, bed bugs etc are deliberately being obtuse. The fact is these were brought deliberately into OP's home as pets for the children and chucking them out with the rubbish because you can't be arsed with them anymore is a terrible message to send them. I don't understand why people can't see that Confused

FireUnderpants · 08/07/2020 20:33

You could ‘rehome’ them to anyone you know with a fish tank. I have several aquariums and feed live food often. Some fish only eat live food, my mandarin will only have live copepods.

My DDs have a gecko and a frog, we have a dedicated shelf for their live food. (I made the mistake this week of getting noisy crickets instead of the silent ones. It’s been like living in a jungle.)

iamtheoneandonlyyy · 08/07/2020 20:33

Oh god the picture 🤣🤣🤣
Sorry I'm soft as they come but the outrage on here has brought a smile to my knackered head

mumwon · 08/07/2020 20:37

@sirfredfredgeorge actually cant some types of body lice carry typhus (not the same as head lice folks!)

NeutrinoWrangler · 08/07/2020 20:38

Giving them back to MIL seems fair. Either that or leave it to the kids to care for them. In a location where you don't have to look at them, preferably.

Obviously they aren't on the same level as a cat or dog. You might as well say that they're the same as a baby!

I don't think I'd lose any sleep over the killing of a few sea monkeys, to be honest. Then again, I don't wring my hands over the ethics of killing ants, mosquitoes, or houseflies, either. I'd never allow new sea monkeys to come into the house, though. It doesn't feel right to get them when you know you'll end up wanting them dead but in this instance, since it was the first time and they were a gift I'd give you a pass.

CupCupGoose · 08/07/2020 20:38

My DC got some for Christmas 2017.they kept reproducing and the last one finally died about a month ago. Couldn't belive hwo long they lasted.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 08/07/2020 20:39

I think they’re scrimp so could go in a normal fish tank as food

Yep - you can feed them fo pet fish. (Drain first)

I'm very surprised that any of them have lived this long - or have you just got round to "setting them away"?

Strugglingtodomybest · 08/07/2020 20:39

There are a lot of great comments. I especially loved...

The way to euthanise aquatic creatures would be a drop of clove oil as a sedative then neat alcohol or blunt force trauma. I keep fish and that is the recommend humane way to end suffering. Fish keepers also feed them to their pets.

I can just imagine the OP getting her magnifying glass and a tiny little hammer to kill the things with blunt force trauma!

I was imagining them with one of those little hammers that come in those "archaeologist dig" toys!

PablosHoney · 08/07/2020 20:39

The outrage from people that will happily gobble down sweet little piggies and shrimp itself 😂😂 won’t someone think of the children.

BeHappyAndSmile · 08/07/2020 20:39

This. Is. Amazing.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 08/07/2020 20:41

So, the value of a creature's life is weighed accordingly to what a human being intends to do with it?

These lives (sea monkeys) have value because they were bought as an entertainment for humans, but these lives (flies, nits etc) have no value because humans don't want to interact with them?

zippityzip · 08/07/2020 20:45

@PablosHoney What can I clutch that doesn't offend anyone 🥺 dogs bollocks? Naice nits? I must clutch something I'm outraged!

PablosHoney · 08/07/2020 20:50

You can clutch some bastard bedbugs, as they haven’t been welcomed over the threshold they are fair game!

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 08/07/2020 20:50

zip I think you probably need to clutch yourself, somehow. Clutching anything else would be wanton cruelty. Somehow.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 08/07/2020 20:52

But if I said hello to the bedbugs... Would that be enough? Or would I need to throw them a welcome party? Clearly I'll be feeding them once I go to bed!

zippityzip · 08/07/2020 20:52

Respectfully clutching myself (ooo-er) at the expense of shrimp shaggers.

Scratchyback · 08/07/2020 20:53

Word of warning op!!! Chuck em, quick - they can grow so big you’ll never get them down the toilet!! Even with paper thrown on top of them.... Grin

billydilly · 08/07/2020 20:53

FireUnderPants you have mandarins! I've got a pair of them too, fab aren't they?

JRUIN · 08/07/2020 20:55

I rest my case about people deliberately being obtuse Hmm

Cherrysoup · 08/07/2020 20:55

Why the fuck would you feed a fucking pet to other fish?

There are dried shrimp in my fish food. Goldfish are notorious for eating their own offspring. They’re forever leaping up to grab passing flies. It’s no different.

Katinski · 08/07/2020 20:56

@berryhead2013

We have had sea monkeys since March they keep breeding they are never going to die I have four pregnant ones just now randy little things like you op I am the only one who gives a shit about them
I lost it when you called the OP a "randy little thing"GrinGrinGrin
SaffronBuns · 08/07/2020 20:58

sea monkeys freaked me out too. They’re like tiny shrimpy sperms.

Blerghhhh!! But no, I didn’t throw them away.

I just waited it out and left them for DH and DS to care for Smile

Lysianthus · 08/07/2020 20:58

@gotothecooler

Ooo this is one of my favourite threads ever.

Why the fuck would you feed a fucking pet to other fish?

I like this comment the best Grin

Honestly, the frothing GrinGrinGrin

Not to mention the drop of clove oil followed by blunt force trauma to kill them....🤣🤣
zippityzip · 08/07/2020 20:58

@Katinski That wins it. It really does.
