Ours is currently £140pm!
We are a family of 2 adults, 4 children.
3 Bed house.
Main usage would be the washing machine and Tumble dryer - They are on a min 3-4x a day each. I know this will rack up cost.

Current energy provider have said "Its high"
Then deflect by saying silly things such as "The seal on your fridge might be broken " and " You must have a hidden electric immersion in the house"...Neither statement true.
We have 1Tv in the house and whilst its on throughout the day, as well as phone chargers, everything else is turned off at the wall!

Everyone I know seems to pay so much less!!!

I pay £35 a month (two bed terraced house).

I wash most days and use the dryer.

Don't watch much TV but do change my phone and tablet most days.

Whitelisbon · 07/07/2020 14:13

We're currently paying about £100/month (prepayment meter) but as soon as we switch the heating on it'll go up to £350ish a month.
2 adults, 5 kids, 3 bedroom house. We've been through all the stuff with the electric company and a charity to help us reduce our consumption and we can't. All electric heating, electric immersion heater, etc. Costs a fortune.

Foxinsocks1 · 07/07/2020 14:13

That’s very high.
This month mine was £85 for electricity AND gas. We’ve noticed electricity bill went down when upgrading appliances like the washer but something must be very wrong for yours to be so high.
We’re 2 AD 3 CH in a 4 bed

Redcrow · 07/07/2020 14:15

I'm on £169pm 🙈 3 bed house for 4 of us. My washer and dryer is on loads. Currently theres usually a tv on in the background to. I've just got it down from 200

Starlet7992 · 07/07/2020 14:15

About £100 for gas and Electric combined. Family of 4 - 2 adults, 2 kids. My tumble dryer is always on too! Obviously more again in the winter months.

NervousInYorkshire · 07/07/2020 14:16

Im the sole occupier of a 1 bed flat, washer and dryer on about once a week, fridge, freezer, tv on a lot. I have a gas oven and central heating. My electric comes to around £15 a month.

vanillandhoney · 07/07/2020 14:18

£30 a month. Two adults. We have a washer/dryer that runs most days but our heating and oven are both gas. We're currently in credit with the British Gas for both by about £100 total.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 07/07/2020 14:19

Ours is currently £115 per month for both gas & electric.

ElephantsAlltheWayDown · 07/07/2020 14:19

£67 a month for a 3 bed semi detached. We're with British Gas and haven't switched to a new tariff since our old one expired, so probably paying a bit more than we should. British Gas says we're slightly below average for similar properties.

It really might be worth having an electrician round to see if anything's causing your really high prices.

Rafflesway · 07/07/2020 14:20

4 bed detached! Ours is £45 per month.
We have dishwasher/washer/tumble dryer/ 3 tv’s one of which is on around 18 hours per day 😱/numerous electrical appliances etc./ a large range cooker with an electric oven as well as the gas oven, (Electric fan oven used the most), and 2 large chest freezers plus the fridge.

We have Economy 7 electricity and I tend to do about 80% of my washing during the night. Tumble dryer is only used during the day.
Dishwasher again mostly used during the night. I have around 5-6 loads of washing per week so obviously much less than yours and dishwasher is mostly used only once per day.

£140 sounds astronomical though 😱. We are with Bulb. Are you with a really expensive tariff with your supplier?

ElephantsAlltheWayDown · 07/07/2020 14:20

Meant to add we're a family of four. I imagine two more kids would be more laundry, but even if we doubles ours it would be less than what you're paying, so still might be worth having someone round to check your electrics.

Bibijayne · 07/07/2020 14:22

4 bed house. Between £50 and £60 a month for the electric. Gas varies between virtually nothing in the summer and a small fortune in winter.

TheHobbitMum · 07/07/2020 14:23

£65 for 5 bed, 6 adult sized humans washing/drying more than you. We pay £100 dual fuel and build up a healthy winter buffer with that. We're with Bulb

AvoidingRealHumans · 07/07/2020 14:23

40 a month for electricity- me and 2 boys. I am expecting a rise soon due to being home all the time for the past 3 months though.
Yours is ridiculously high though.

Rafflesway · 07/07/2020 14:24

Forgot to add, there is only the 2 of us and I pay £100 per month on dd which covers gas and electric year round.

SoddingWeddings · 07/07/2020 14:24

Run a check through an independent comparison site like Uswitch and check if you'd be better to move to an other company and a different tariff.

I'm going to shamelessly plug my referral link for Bulb here - they pay exit fees for your existing companies, and using this link gets you £50 account credit and I get the same. Its 100% renewable energy as well. I've been with them 2yrs, keep checking my bills and I can never save more then about £25 in a year but those companies have dreadful serviced reviews. These guys have been great.

£85 per month, 2 adults, 2 children 4 bed detached. 1-2 loads of washing per day, tumble dryer, dishwasher, 3 TVs (not all ok at once!), games consoles. Actual amount fluctuates, we’re paying down a debit amount.

Zeusthemoose · 07/07/2020 14:26

£70 gas and electric combined in spring/ summer, goes up to £100 in winter as have central heating on. Family of 3. Im pretty careful not to waste energy, very rarely use tumble dryer but I do have an electric car.

poorbuthappy · 07/07/2020 14:28

£75 per month for electric. It's gone up by £15 per month since lockdown due to being 5 of us here all day every day.
5 laptops, 5 phones, 5 teles. At least 1 load of washing and tumble dry every day.

ifonly4 · 07/07/2020 14:30

We pay £65 pm for gas and electric (two adults plus one adult whose been at home 50% of year) - I think it's roughly a 50/50 split). I expect it to go up as DH working from home now and he has two phones, an ipad and computer on all day.

I guess the use of washing machine and tumble dryer adds considerably - our washing machine is on only five times a week and we don't have a tumble dryer. Have you got energy saving light bulbs and switch lights off when rooms aren't in use?

ThePants999 · 07/07/2020 14:35

£140/mth gas and electric here, 4-bed detached, and we're with Bulb, so not a crazy expensive tariff. But we're knowingly prolific energy users - house heated very warm outside the summer, multiple rooms with air conditioning, huge amounts of washing machine/tumble dryer/dishwasher/electric oven/electric shower use. Just got an electric car so now it's going to go up even more Smile

byvirtue · 07/07/2020 14:41

Ours varies from £85 to £140, that’s for a 6 bed house with stables (needs electric in the winter), 3 people and we have always worked from home. The reason ours goes so high is when the electric AGA is on in the winter, don’t have a tumble dryer though.

Are you sure your immersion heater isn’t on?

Delbelleber · 07/07/2020 14:47

Set bill £90 a month for gas and electric 4bed house. Got my 2 kids part time and me and baby full time. I'm frugal with energy consumption.

UnfinishedSymphon · 07/07/2020 14:49

What are you washing EVERY day to have your washer on 3-4 times a day minimum?!

Lazypuppy · 07/07/2020 14:49

Washing machine on 3-4 times a day?! No wonder your electric bill is high, your waer bill must be the same
