To ask your electric bill ?

Lollypop4 · 07/07/2020 14:08

Ours is currently £140pm!
We are a family of 2 adults, 4 children.
3 Bed house.
Main usage would be the washing machine and Tumble dryer - They are on a min 3-4x a day each. I know this will rack up cost.

Current energy provider have said "Its high"
Then deflect by saying silly things such as "The seal on your fridge might be broken " and " You must have a hidden electric immersion in the house"...Neither statement true.
We have 1Tv in the house and whilst its on throughout the day, as well as phone chargers, everything else is turned off at the wall!

Everyone I know seems to pay so much less!!!

That's a very large difference, please make sure you've actually checked that the bulb price per kWh is actually over 30% cheaper than your current tariff.

Do you have the 2 tariffs to hand - you must be on a very expensive one now.

lifesalongsong · 07/07/2020 21:59

Sorry, posted too soon,

Don't be seduced by a cheaper monthly payment alone as that's only an estimate of how much it will cost. I don't mean to patronize you but there's no such things as a fixed monthly £££ amount.

Sh05 · 08/07/2020 12:47

Pp is correct about the fixed monthly payment varying but I have found that the change isn't huge. We send in monthly readings to Bulb, they review our payments every 3 months so even when the weather is cooler and nights longer the change in the bill is gradual.
We have never had a sudden drastic change in payments but this is obviously dependant on you submitting meter readings regularly.

GinDrinker00 · 08/07/2020 12:50

£20 a week, that’s on pay as you go. 3 bed house. I’m really tight on electric though; don’t leave lights on, if it’s a nice day I’ll dry everything outside rather than tumble dry. Etc. Winter is about £25.

dementedpixie · 08/07/2020 12:54

Did you use your actual annual usage for the comparison? That's a big drop in payment, hope it covers the amount you use or you will end up with a larger payment down the line

iknowimcoming · 08/07/2020 13:01

Even with 4 kids 3-4 loads of washing a day is honestly ridiculous - unless you have a tiny capacity washer or something. Take a closer look at that and it'll save you time and money and improve your quality of life!

contrmary · 08/07/2020 13:09

£43 for gas and electricity combined. Mostly electricity, we get through about 1 or 2 units of gas per month max.

hulahooper2 · 08/07/2020 13:45

£93 per month for gas and electric in 4 bed new build , 4 adults , 2 wfh, tv , gaming , chargers all in use

hulahooper2 · 08/07/2020 13:47

That is a lot of washing You do , do 1 big wash per day , colours 1 day , then whites then darks , that may help

SweetPetrichor · 08/07/2020 14:09

My DP works in the energy industry and he says your usage sounds perfectly normal for a 3 bed family house...in fact, given how much you're using the washer/dryer, he can't see how you aren't using more!

OneForMeToo · 08/07/2020 14:16

Three bed house five people we pay £161 a month electric and apparently that needs to go up another £6-£7 a month.

We swapped out bulbs for smart ones and even binned off the dishwasher (last legs anyway) but the usage is still going up and up.

PigletJohn · 08/07/2020 14:29

Of the appliances you mention, only the tumble drier is expensive in electricity. It probably uses about 3kW, so that's around 45p an hour.

The washing machine uses a similar amount, but only for about ten minutes while it heats the water, so that's around 7.5pence per wash.

I am assuming you pay around 15p per kWh. Check your bill to see.

Do you have an electric shower? It will cost around £1.35 per hour.

How do you heat your hot water?

How do you heat your house?

Do you have an electric cooker?

Finally, look past the amount of your monthly direct debit, which may not match your usage because there may be estimates and old balanced included in the calculation.

Look at the meter readings.

Do you know the reading from a year ago or a month ago? Compare it to today's reading, What's the kWh used?

if not, find the oldest electricity bill you can and compare the reading to today. Take weekly readings for a while.

Actual usage numbers are important to seeing what's happening.

Could you upload a photo of your latest bill (just the money bit not your info) and the we can see what tariff you are currently on. Don't rush to change if you don't understand what you're doing
Lollypop4 · 08/07/2020 17:06

Thank you.
I have requested bill as I pay on pay as you go ,at present. The online app I have, also doesnt show the readings.
The last 12 months I do know that my usuage was 6,205kw.
The call handler said the average for a family and home our size is 4,500kw PA.
Thats when he suggest " I must have a hidden immersion somewhere"

£43 for one and £27 the other (can’t remember which is which). Large 4/5 bed detached.

mencken · 08/07/2020 17:09

do you have a hot water tank with an immersion?

I agree that the suggested saving sounds unbelievable. To help, we need to see

your current unit rate
your current standing charge
the proposed new unit rate
and the proposed new standing charge.

you've given your usage last year so I can do the sums for you in moments and let you know what your new bill will be. Make sure it is a fixed rate tariff as prices are now going up again.

Bulb may not be the best for electric only as they give the best rates to dual fuel users. London based millennial-run company.

Lolly86 · 08/07/2020 17:13

2 bed terraced bill was £78 for last month but the hot.tub was on quite a lot plus electric shower. Someone home generally lol day with lockdown. 2 snake tanks and usual appliances so I was OK with it.

If you've paid £140 per month over the past year and you don't have any arrears that's £,1,680, lets say for arguement's sake the standing charge was £80, so £1,600 for 6205kw is over 25p per kWh - that's extortionate.

Are you sure you aren't paying off any previous underpayments. You really need a bill and the previous year's summary urgently

Asdf12345 · 08/07/2020 21:07

The ofgem prepayment price cap works out at 21p per unit or thereabouts so something isn’t right.
