Lollypop4 · 07/07/2020 14:08

Ours is currently £140pm!
We are a family of 2 adults, 4 children.
3 Bed house.
Main usage would be the washing machine and Tumble dryer - They are on a min 3-4x a day each. I know this will rack up cost.

Current energy provider have said "Its high"
Then deflect by saying silly things such as "The seal on your fridge might be broken " and " You must have a hidden electric immersion in the house"...Neither statement true.
We have 1Tv in the house and whilst its on throughout the day, as well as phone chargers, everything else is turned off at the wall!

Everyone I know seems to pay so much less!!!

Four adults in the house (about 2800 square feet), we use propane for space heating, water heating, the tumble dryer and the stove.

Electric is dear in NY and it's mostly the cost of delivering it and maintaining the infrastructure. The power itself ranges from 6 to8 cents per KWH, then add about 16 cents per KWH for all of the other charges.

Our electric bill is about $150 per month in the winter and $200 to $250 in the summer when we have the central air conditioning on. It used to be higher in the summer until we upgraded to a higher efficiency system two years ago.

Lancrelady80 · 07/07/2020 16:51

That's a hell of of a lot of washing! Any special reason? Is this standard or increased due to work/school requirements to wash clothes as soon as get home and wear clean the following day?

We do a load a day and hang it on a clothes drier. We have a tumble drier but rarely use it due to it being evil on electric.

3 bed house, 2 adults and 2 children. Oil combi boiler for heating. £69 electric plus save £80 per month in a dedicated oil account.

TDogsInHats · 07/07/2020 16:56

@passthemustard

This is do depressing. I got an email 10 minutes ago from my provider saying they are putting my direct debit up to £232 per month 😩😩

4 bed, 4 story house, brand new windows and doors last year and whole house rewired, new circuit board. 2 adults, 3 teenagers and a little one.

I did reduce my direct debit for three months during lockdown when I had little income but I still feel this is steep for a repayment it was £160 previously.

I've had a dehumidifier on sporadically after a leak so I think this may be the issue.

If your leak was covered under your household insurance, then the cost of extra electricity (for the dehumidifier) should be, too. Dehumidifiers use loads of electricity.
TDogsInHats · 07/07/2020 16:58

Our joint gas and electricity bill is £48 pcm all year round. 4 bed semi detached, gas hob, gas CH combination boiler. Plus log burner (never paid for any wood had it for several years)

vampirethriller · 07/07/2020 17:06

About £10 a week pre payment metre, a one bed flat with me and a toddler.

overthinker91 · 07/07/2020 17:17

We were around £11 a month (one bed flat, all LED lightbulbs, washer, dryer, gas heating) until i didn't realise we ticked over onto the standard rate in January and our last bill was £43! wont be letting that happen again....

TimeWastingButFun · 07/07/2020 18:22

Other people's bills on here seem surprisingly low. Here I think 4 people having power showers every day is contributing to our £150 bill, but apart from the never ending dishwasher and 2 washing loads average a day (no tumble drier if it's not raining) and nightly car charge it's all small bits but lots of them - ipads, games consoles etc all needing charging and lots of mood lighting, especially in the boys rooms! It doesn't seem a lot but it's surprising how it all adds up!

Ishihtzuknot · 07/07/2020 18:25

That sounds like a lot, try and get a quote with a different company and check your tariff. For 3 of us in a terraced house it’s £30 a month, that’s including daily washing and tumble dryer, max it has ever been is £45 with heating on all winter

Rosieeknight997 · 07/07/2020 18:27

I pay around £80 a month in a 2 bed flat that only has electricity, theres 2 adults & 1 toddler

sanityisamyth · 07/07/2020 19:02

2 bed flat. 1 adult, 1 6 year old. Was originally £58 a month. Now £129 a month as I underestimated the cost of the electric heaters. I'm now £200 in credit which I hope gets refunded. Never using the electric heaters again (will survive under the duvet!) and my actual monthly usage is £40 a month according to the smart meter.

Youcunnyfunt · 07/07/2020 19:11

Mine is £40 a month at the moment, with Bulb.

2 of us, adults, and we’ve only just started working outside the house again, so that’s cost on furlough, spending all our time at home.
Cooker is gas, shower is electric (combi boiler), have 2x fridges and a freezer, we don’t leave many lights on, do use a microwave, don’t have a tumbledrier, don’t have a smart tv (do have a very old lcd screen), but we are on internet a LOT and have a tivo box. We’re also running several laptops and phones.
We run the dishwasher probably 3 or 4 times a week. The washing machine probably an average of once or twice a week.
So we are pretty economical which explains the low bill, we could do more (less internet and devices!) but I think we do enough!

RowboatsinDisguise · 07/07/2020 19:24

About £80-90 per month for two adults, one toddler. Toddler was, until recently, in cloth nappies; not had a bill since he fully trained. We live in small two bed cottage, with no gas. Immersion boiler only. No TV, not a lot of electronics tbh. We use electric heaters over the winter a fair bit so our last bill would have taken that into account too.

Yellredder · 07/07/2020 19:31

£124 a month for all electric house. Small, mid terrace three bed. They want to increase it to £136. I've had to turn the boiler off as it costs £3 a day to heat that up!. Currently we're spending between £1.50 and £2 a day. Nothing in standby, rarely watch TV, no tumble dryer and the washing machine doesn't use much.

Greydrapex · 07/07/2020 19:47

Family if 5, it’s £175 a month. During lockdown we’ve used 90% more than this time last year.

SoloMummy · 07/07/2020 19:54

@Lollypop4
Surely at this time of year, you could line dry rather than tumble dry? How do you manage 3-4 loads a day? I presume not full loads?

Animum2 · 07/07/2020 19:59

2 of us in 1 bed flat, only do washing at weekend and we are out all day at work but pay on key meter so it varies, usually 20 to 30 quid pm

MistyIsland · 07/07/2020 20:14

3 bed detached. With 2 adults and 2 children, All electric around £165 per month. We are very heavy on electric and run a hot tub (costs around £10 per week) we also have use the immersion heater as we found it drained the oil tank over winter really quickly! Washing machine is on 10-15 times per week, no tumble dryer most of our appliances are A/AA rated.

Need to work out how to work it (put it on a timer) as I suspect it’s costing quite a bit.

I’m in the process of changing all the light bulbs etc.

It’s gone up to £198 per month since lockdown.

Cotswoldmama · 07/07/2020 20:25

£90 for gas and electricity. There's four of us and it's a draughty old house. I used the quick wash or eco cycle on the washing machine. We don't have a tumble dryer we just use the washing line, no need to iron then either!

TERFWars · 07/07/2020 20:29

Ours is £75 a month, very large 3 bed and family of 5.

We use the tumble every other day and we have kids incapable of turning a light or TV off and we’ve all been home all day pretty much every day since March.

I thought ours was high but I’m feeling grateful now after looking at some of the figures!

40somethingJBJ · 07/07/2020 21:00

I pay £95 per month, year round, for gas and electricity combined. I always build up a surplus over the year. 3 bed semi with single glazing, so not as economical as it could be.

gamerchick · 07/07/2020 21:06

I don't think I could handle using the drier that often. Put it on and then look at the electricity wheel in the meter.

I only use mine once a week max for knickers and socks. Stick a dry bathtowel in with the laundry for a shorter drying time.

Coulddowithanap · 07/07/2020 21:07

You can't compare how much you pay with other people. You need to look at how much electricity you are actually using. Check your meter same time each day then you will get an idea.

I've been looking at this lately and we are using around 9 kwh in day and 2 over night (we have economy 7 so I should probably start putting the washing machine on over night and see if that makes a difference with our bills)

imabusybee · 07/07/2020 21:13

£70/month, family of 2 adults 2 toddlers and 2 dogs, 5 bed house. I work from home every day. Tumble drier on in the colder months but only for towels March-october. We run one electric car included in our electricity bill (get about 700 miles/month from the car)

Lollypop4 · 07/07/2020 21:16

Should've said in OP,We have oil centeral heating, we also have electric shower ( used 3x a day) the younger children have a bath, we have an electric cooker too.
I guess the 4 main appliances we have just rack up everything !
So the £140 is just electric .
Unfortunately, we can't use a washing line outside, heavy smokers either side of our house, the washing ends up stinking of cigarettes.
We just seem to have endless washing, having spoken to a few friends with same amount of people in their household, the washing seems to also be never ending with them too.
Looking at switching and I can get this down to approx £88 with bulb, I called them direct but they were the cheapest on comparrison sites, but for some reason on the comparrison site, it was £108 pm !

Thank you for all the replies, a lot of you seem to have such low electric bills, hopefully mine will now stay low with bulb
