To think that Slimming World just doesn't work

Ok, so I have been following SW for a week and have lost nothing! Exactly the same weight as last week. What am I doing wrong or does SW not suit everyone. Here is a typical SW day for me:-

Breakfast: 3 eggs scrambled in Frylight, tomatoes and mushrooms fried in Frylight, slice of wholemeal bread from a small loaf (HexB), cup of tea with milk from allowance (HexA)

Lunch: Batchelors Pasta N Sauce Cheese & Broccoli made with water (2.5 syns), jacket potato and a huge salad (lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, beetroot, onions) balsamic vinegar

Dinner: Either syn free Quorn lasagne with HexA 30g cheddar cheese, salad and maybe syn free chips cooked in Airfryer or syn free Quorn curry and rice, or jacket potato with salad, or roast Quorn dinner with Frylight potatoes and loads of steamed vegetables

Snacks: Fruit, syn free homemade soup made with loads of speed veg, sometimes homemade crisps in AirFryer, Fage yoghurt with frozen fruit

Help! 😩

@VioletGrace

Slimming World is not a 'con'. I lost 4 stone on the plan very easily and have kept it off for over 5 years. Most people at the group I went to, me included, had huge losses on the first week. Are you eating too many syns without realising it perhaps? I'd recommend eating your evening meal as a SW SP style meal with no carbs.
Definitely just stuck to the free food apart from the pasta and sauce on two days and 2 rich tea biscuits most evenings. No alcohol at all.

OP if you like a plan that is defined and more restrictive, do the Blood Sugar Diet/or updated Fast 800. It works, fast, and it’s very clear what the rules are. There’s a great thread in the Fasting Diets section here. I did it as a vegetarian so it’s entirely possible. It’s partly down to the calorie restriction but getting into Keto works too. It will certainly change your mindset on what size portions you actually need to feel satisfied.

@user1471530109

As everyone else is saying.

Also, you say your using an airfryer? Are you sure that's allowed? When I did it years ago it was a few sprays of frylight on your cut up potato to make chips.

Can anyone confirm that an air fryer is allowed please.

Doggodogington · 07/07/2020 09:47

One third of your plate should be speed (veg/salad) then one portion of protein (lean meat or quorn ) and one portion of carbs.
Chips are not a snack and should be synned if eaten as a snack.
Soup is not a snack.
Change snacks to veg sticks or a piece of fruit or a yoghurt or a boiled egg.
Your breakfast is fine.
Free food doesn’t mean eat all you want of it.

insomniasucks · 07/07/2020 09:47

@PermanentCobOn

I don't do SW but I find that when I follow my diet I don't lose anything week 1 as my body is like WTF? and then week 2 I drop a few kilos.
Ooh that's interesting. Maybe I should give it another week.
OP posts:
Doggodogington · 07/07/2020 09:47

Air fryer is fine.

insomniasucks · 07/07/2020 09:48

@Backbackandforth

Slimming world is utter nonsense.

There is no such thing as “free food” calories are calories and your body doesn’t follow whatever “syn” value slimming world decide to make it that week, depending on what branded product they’re trying to sell. People only lose on SW because they’re in a calorie deficit then 95pc spend years going up and down because they eat as much pasta as they want but are trained to see mashed banana as the devil. You’re clearly not in a calorie deficit so won't lose.

Follow “rebel fit” on Facebook and you’ll see how utter nonsense SW is.

Track your calories, cut that, and if after a couple weeks you lose nothing cut them further.

I think you may well be right.

@Chewbecca

It doesn’t work for me.

I don’t think it works for very short or very hungry people & I am both.

I can’t be told you can have unlimited potatoes for example & that I need to self regulate when I am full. I love spuds. 🥔

I could have written this! Grin

The thing is everyone is different and the key is finding what works for you. My fitness pal didn’t work for me but SW does. Others are the complete opposite.

Don’t look for quick fixes, you need to find a new way of eating which is sustainable for you long term.

strawberry2017 · 07/07/2020 09:49

For those of you saying it's only been a week- the first week of a new diet such as slimming world or weight watchers you usually have a larger then normal weight loss because of the changes you have made.
I've never done SW but in the past on WW the first week was always the week I would loose at least 3ibs and it would then be more realistic the following weeks.
So I can understand why OP expected something. Don't think it's the diet for you OP.
Good luck with your slimming journey though.
I'm about to embark on one myself after having my second baby and having at least 4 stone to loose. X

tabulahrasa · 07/07/2020 09:50

The air fryer is fine as long as you use a free spray oil or count oil... ignoring the bits of the plan you don’t like and everyone pointing out that you’re not in fact doing SW as it’s supposed to be... not so much.

stressedhousebuyer · 07/07/2020 09:50

You definitely can eat as much as you want, I did and still lost weight, however you won't lose weight at the same speed as if you also did portion control.

That said if you want to maintain it long term I wouldn't portion control as then you'll stick to it longer, I think you need to give it a chance, see where you are in about 5 or 6 weeks

insomniasucks · 07/07/2020 09:50

@Scrumpyjacks

SW was great while I was really 'on it' but I've never been bigger than when I stopped doing it. It's not sustainable and it's not healthy. Calorie deficit and excersise is the only healthy way. One thing I did take from SW was learning what they call 'speed foods' which are the things I now go to first for a snack if I want to loose weight.
Yes I love all the speed foods. The problem is I love ALL food. Confused

@Coulddowithanap

So you've tried it for a week and decided it doesn't work! You can't expect instant results with diet and exercise.
I only wanted to lose a pound. That's all.
OP posts:
insomniasucks · 07/07/2020 09:51

@PenelopePitstop49

I'd be in a diabetic coma with all those carbs!

I did SW years ago (the green plan) and put 4lbs on the first week from eating way too much free food.

It's far easier to do intermittent fasting (I do 16:8), and go lower carb (not low, it's too restrictive). I have one serving per day of starchy carbs ie seeded bread, a pitta bread or wholegrain rice. The rest of my food intake is protein and veggies. Keeps my diabetes well under control and I reliably lose 2/3 lb a week.

Yes I always worry about diabetes.
OP posts:
insomniasucks · 07/07/2020 09:52

@PermanentCobOn

P.s. That is loads of food.

Lasagna AND chips Shock That is not a diet.

Exactly, it's mental.
OP posts:
Brieminewine · 07/07/2020 09:53

I think your taking the free food too literally, all it means is that you can have it without sinning it not that you should eat mountains of it. You are eating far too much, those portions are huge! People tend to have a big loss in the first week so I don’t think this diet is going to work for you. Look into calorie counting if you prefer rigid guidelines. I’m team no carb but if portion control is your downfall this wouldn’t work for you either.

insomniasucks · 07/07/2020 09:53

@Clearyweary

Thats a massive amount of food! Much more than I would eat even when I wasnt watching my weight. I’m not surprised you havent lost weight if thats your daily food intake.

As others have said, even if its ‘free’ food it still has calories in it

But then it shouldn't be advertised as free food surely Confused

insomniasucks · 07/07/2020 09:54

@Cuppaand2biscuits

It is indeed a con OP. Slimming World is a business, if it gave good advice and everyone lost weight and kept it off. Then you wouldn't be paying them every week. They want you to be struggling and frustrated so you will still attend the weekly meetings looking for the answers.
This is so sad but I think you're right.

Haven't RTFT but OMG that's a lot of food!

insomniasucks · 07/07/2020 09:55

@Awwlookatmybabyspider

I can’t believe the amount of people telling you you’re eating too much. I was told not only is it free food, but You also need to eat more to get your metabolism going. It’s not a 1 stick of celery a day diet. Sadly, like every weight loss plan it doesn’t work for everyone though. I was talking to someone who wasn’t losing weight on it, after weeks and weeks and even her consultant said. She didn’t think it was working for her. Yet one women lost 20lbs in one week!!!. Speaking from personal experience my mum lost a good few stone with SW and kept it off.
Yes, I was told the more you eat the more you lose.
OP posts:
Ploughingthrough · 07/07/2020 09:57

Yes, I was told the more you eat the more you lose

What science is this? It can help to stoke the metabolism now and again by eating a little more than usual (like a couple of hundred calories) but it's hardly a case of the more you eat the more you lose. That literally goes against science.

insomniasucks · 07/07/2020 09:57

@Luaa

I've never found slimming world works for me. That does seem like loads of food.

I've found the only diet that really works for me is calorie counting, with about 1350 calories a day and exercise to burn 100-400 calories extra a day (depends on the day) and then one weekend day I have an eat what I want day but still track it (in my fitness Pal) and stay under 2000.

The problem for me with slimming world is being able to eat as much as you like of some things - if I had a good idea of when to stop eating or portion sizes I wouldn't be so overweight would I!

I've definitely eaten far more food this past week than I normally would. I have definitely had more energy though and my skin looks a lot more healthier. Like you say, if everyone knew how to control portion sizes we wouldn't have an obesity crisis.
OP posts:
insomniasucks · 07/07/2020 09:58

@MrsEvil

You don't need to eat processed crap on slimming world. I didn't before and I certainly don't now. Everything is cooked from scratch. Not brought from there food range.
Me too, apart from the pasta and sauce. It's so time consuming though. I've only been able to cook from scratch as I'm furloughed.
OP posts:
milveycrohn · 07/07/2020 09:58

First, you need to know what sort of diet (good and bad foods, etc) SW promotes.
From what I understand, it is a low fat diet. ie, it's not the Jacket Potato, but the butter you have with it).
This diet often does not work, because one buys foods such as low fat meals, in which the fat has been replaced by sugar!.
Secondly, in my experience, it takes at least 2 weeks for any diet to start working!
