To ask if there are *ANY* facemasks that don't steam up glasses?

Can anybody recommend facemasks that can be worn with specs? Both the shell type ones and the paper ones just steam up my glasses within 3 seconds. The cloth one I tried is even worse.

My home made one is ok. I followed the instructions on .gov and it came out a bit baggy so so I had it on over my mouth and nose on the train last weekend to follow the rules but I think being a little loose meant the breath did all go directly to my glasses.

Doctor friend of mine said they stick the bridge of the nose down with a plaster and that stops that effect. Have you tried that?

BertieBotts · 04/07/2020 15:08

You need to have one properly fitted around your nose. So one with a mouldable piece of wire in there would do the trick.

Grumpbum123 · 04/07/2020 15:08

Fold a piece of tissue over the top of the mask and tuck it in against your nose. Works for me

BertieBotts · 04/07/2020 15:09

I also push my glasses a little down my nose and this is better.

FredaFox · 04/07/2020 15:11

Oh my god I need this! Just done my first train journey and I had to take my glasses off
I’ve a few masks and it happens on all of them

Milbo · 04/07/2020 15:13

Rub a little bit of hand wash on the lens and wipe off, it should stop steaming up. Don’t use anything with moisturisers or anything very scented in

LivingDeadGirlUK · 04/07/2020 15:15

Best ive found so far are disposable ones with a mouldable strip around the nose. 18 quid for 50 on Amazon.

LesbianMummies · 04/07/2020 15:20

If it’s steaming up your glasses it’s a poor fit. I’ve found the FFP3 works well with my glasses but I was professionally fit tested for that with work with I appreciate isn’t easily done.

TheFallenMadonna · 04/07/2020 15:21

I use these in the masks I make, but they are self adhesive, so you could put one over the top of an existing mask to flatten it against your nose. My masks are quite large, as are my glasses Grin, and it stops them steaming up.

SmallPinkBear · 04/07/2020 15:21

Also try twisting the straps so they cross over, that really helps

ComeOnGordon · 04/07/2020 15:23

Actually the ones that are more sewn to the shape of a face are a nightmare for my glasses. Agree that a metal strip helps and then tuck them under the glasses also helps me

Juo · 04/07/2020 15:24

You need to bend the nose wire quite firmly round your nose.
Rub liquid soap or shampoo on your glasses then allow to dry without rinsing. Buff with a cloth when dry. Same trick works on a bathroom mirror- stops them steaming up.

MotherMorph · 04/07/2020 15:25

I'm not sure if I'm doing this wrong as the only time I had an issue with the mask was when I wasnt wearing glasses. I've tried cloth and disposable ones and found them too loose without glasses but since seeing an nhs worker cross the elastic in front of the ears (IYSWIM) I tried that and it made it a much better fit. My glasses havent steamed up at all.

ChristinaRussell · 04/07/2020 15:26

I make my own and I put wire over the nose bridge. As long as it's firmly moulded over my nose my glasses don't steam up. The slightest gap though, and they do! It's definitely a Problem...

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 04/07/2020 15:26

I wear glasses with a large frame and find the rim almost touches the tops of my cheeks and helps pin the mask down so my glasses don't get steamed up - it was a pleasant surprise! Grin

Not helpful if you have small rims but hopefully helpful for anyone looking to buy new frames.

Sportsnight · 04/07/2020 15:31

I think, if you have some, that tit tape stuff would hold it down. I tuck mine under my glasses semi-successfully (mask not tits).

Cookies2523 · 04/07/2020 15:32

My sister's friend told her to put shaving foam on glasses, then wash/wipe off with soft cloth. My sister thought her friend was winding her up BUT she tried it & said it really does work. Her glasses don't steam up anymore when she has her face mask on.

Theforest · 04/07/2020 15:33

Get one with nose wire

Pinniped · 04/07/2020 15:36

I found it better by wearing the mask really high so that the bottom of my glasses were below the top of the mask. Not perfect but much better. Possibly a similar effect to @thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter by sort of pinning it down. And using a mask with one of the nose wire things. My glasses are quite small frames.
The washing up liquid didn't work for me.

UncleShady · 04/07/2020 15:37

If I pull the mask higher up my nose and glasses down a bit - so the nose bridge of the glasses rests on the cloth not my actual nose skin it works far better.

Rockbird · 04/07/2020 15:56

I bought some face masks from Asda George and they're the only ones I've found that don't steam up. No matter how hard I try all the others do. I ended up walking round Homebase pinching my nose like there was a bad smell Grin. The Asda ones are fab.

AngryAngel · 04/07/2020 16:01

Oh, and while I'm here, am I the only person who can't get the elastic bits to stay around the ears? Maybe I have an enormous head and floppy ears, but they just pop off. Tempted to just get one of those glass bowls like Sandy has in Spongebob.

I don’t have any tips to stop steaming up, but I would strongly advise against putting things like shaving foam, washing up liquid etc on the lenses of glasses.

This especially applies if you have expensive lenses with anti-reflection coatings. Lots of chemicals ruin the coatings of lenses, making them very difficult to see through. Washing up liquid definitely does this. You don’t want to have to replace a £500 pair of lenses due to putting shaving foam on them because someone online suggested it!

misskatamari · 04/07/2020 16:09

I've made some of these and they are really well fitted around the nose.
