To think hairdressers are CF?

Passing on PPE charge to customers.

Angry

Have been going 30 years to this chain.

In the last 10 since going grey, I've visited every 17 days damn you fast growing hair currently £58 per visit. Then hair cut every 3 months at approx another £50.

AIBU to think they should absorb this cost?

Salons can do about half the amount of customers a day due to the rules in place plus pay for visors and screens and masks.
They don't make a huge amount of profit anyway-average is 15%.
They are going to be making losses as it is. More places will close.

princesstiabeanie · 04/07/2020 21:08

It's a miracle you've got any hair left going every 2 and a half weeks. Christ almighty.

Also, you want to go to the hairdressers during a pandemic so you should pay extra for the precautions and the privilege. Suck it up and go grey if you don't like it, that's what many people I know have done.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 04/07/2020 21:10

Why is going to the hairdresser's a privilege? I thought it was a paid service.

AuntyBess · 04/07/2020 21:10

@BarbaraofSeville

You do have an expensive hobby, it's having your hair done. How on earth can you be arsed to go so often?

You'd probably only have to stretch it out to 19 or 20 days or horror of horrors a whole 3 weeks to absorb the cost of PPE yourself on an annual spend basis.

Thb, as I've realised that the root spray is quite effective, I've been considering trying to use that for an extra few days in this new world. That would mean I could have an appointment on a set day every 3 weeks which would certainly make life/work planning slightly easier to manage.

I'll ponder.

Just think how much you have saved in lockdown.

Massive businesses are going to administration- salons have still been paying bills for months with no income .
I only get my hair cut every 4 months so mine is fine .

My Ds who went on g tv e Saturday before lockdown has missed a couple of cuts. He is going Monday . I am happy to pay extra.

I do use ppe in my job normally the price has rocketed

DominaShantotto · 04/07/2020 21:39

For how much better I feel now my hideous roots have been done and the improvement in my self esteem - I view the extra cost of today’s appointment as a good investment.

Yeah I could have embraced the shitty mouse in my case and fine hair that gets lank as hell with any length on it - but my hairdresser is a miracle worker who has me, for the first period in my entire life, with a haircut that works for my awful natural hair type, looks good and is manageable. It’s high maintenance how I have it - bleached and toned almost white blonde and very asymmetrical sharply cut - but that’s a decision I’m fine with - only drawback is it’s fucking dreadful if you get caught in a lockdown for months and months!

I’ve had so many haircuts that I couldn’t maintain at home - this woman is amazing!

ZezetteEpouseX · 04/07/2020 21:51

Why the insistence on berating the OP for having her roots done so regularly? That is completely her choice how often she goes and how much she pays each time.

Of course it's her choice, as is mine to spend a small fortune with my own hairdresser because I judge it worth it.

It doesn't stop hairdresser from being a luxury option, that you don't need to stay smart and have an immaculate appearance. Hair salons are free to charge anything they like as long as it is clearly advertised and known in advance. You are free to go somewhere else.

whichteaareyou · 04/07/2020 21:54

PPE is Massive additional cost! If you don't want to pay it don't go and give your app slot to someone who will pay it! CF!

Fifthtimelucky · 04/07/2020 21:54

My hairdresser is adding on £6.50 per appointment. I haven't booked yet. Haven't been since Christmas so I'm definitely overdue a cut but I'm retired so thought I'd let those who are working get in first. I don't go very often anyway. I usually have it cut 4 times a year, with highlights every other visit to cover the grey.

My husband went today. Old fashioned barber that doesn't make appointments. Barber was wearing a visor and husband was given a face mask and asked to wear it. No extra cost. Barber wouldn't use hairdryer or razor.

I LOVE my grey hair
I genuinely do not understand people who are so scared of their life lived that they hide it

louise055 · 04/07/2020 21:56

£5 is reasonable, mines adding a 20% COVID charge and they don't want me using my voucher I received as a present before lockdown, they want "real" payment over the phone before I've even stepped in the salon!

Alsohuman · 04/07/2020 21:59

Your hair sounds amazing @DominaShantotto. Bet it was exhilarating to be restored to your real self.

Clumsyvolcano · 04/07/2020 22:00

No, they’re not cheeky at all. They haven’t been able to earn a living for the last 3 months and a lot of hairdressers are self employed, they could do without the cost of PPE as well as the loss of earnings they’ve already suffered. It’s a luxury service, don’t go if you’re not not happy. Hmm

transformandriseup · 04/07/2020 22:03

PPE is expensive so I don't think they should be forced to absorb the cost if they don't want to.

ZezetteEpouseX · 04/07/2020 22:04

grey hair make me look old and tired, borderline haggard. I look a million time better with artificial colours on my hair 🤷

You can see how much better some actresses look with darker hair than blond of very light. It's not about hiding, it's about boosting your looks.

RainbowMum11 · 04/07/2020 22:17

It's not your PPE that they have to cover - they need extra time between clients, face shields, disposable gowns, disinfect & barbecued between every client etc etc - on top on not having an income for weeks but still having to pay rent etc.

MUM2019MARVEL · 04/07/2020 22:21

Oh wow..I'm a hair stylist. Just wow, please tell me this is a joke?..Your a bit of a CF yourself aren't you?! You seem like the type of person to sit in my chair complaining about the brunt the NHS have taken with people not listening to the government guidelines or not wearing masks in public..only to book an appointment the DAY the salons open and complain that they want to protect themselves for servicing you!! (at a minimal cost they are very upfront about) rather than sneakily charging extra and not telling people why..I mean it's positively abhorrent considering the current climate and them not wanting to take a virus home to their kids/partner Hmm ..just to add (you have your own business??..like you can't afford the surcharge FFS!) You make me want to take up a new vocation..which i might just do Wink

AuntyBess · 04/07/2020 22:31

MUM2019

Please point where I've said I've booked to go on day 1 Hmm

OP posts:
mrsBtheparker · 04/07/2020 23:09

If the increase is because of PPE can we expect prices to go back to normal when it's no longer needed? What's the rate of increase, mine is around 50%!

MUM2019MARVEL · 04/07/2020 23:10

  • you firstly mentioned"Passing on PPE charge to customers"/ so you have more than likely called and asked for an appointment or they wouldn't have told you there was an extra charge on each appointment Passing on PPE charge to customers.

  • I've visited every 17 days... Then hair cut every 3 months at approx/ if you went this regularly and are that anal about your hair you'd be the type to have made one.

*Also just for the record, can you point to where I say you HAVE booked an appointment, yeah I didn't think so.. I said 'you seem like the type' so let's read it again slowly this time..

AIBU to think they should absorb this cost..yes you are being unreasonable :D
P.s if your going to tag me in a post confronting me defending my job atleast actually tag me in it..or from others p.o.v it would look like I have just accepted your bullshit, thank you. Grin

RedToothBrush · 04/07/2020 23:16

Just think how much you have saved in lockdown.

That'll be £360.30 according to the OPs figures.

And she still objects to a fiver for PPE surcharge. Tight fisted or what?

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 04/07/2020 23:24

I find it really unfair and sexist how cheap men’s hair is to cut in comparison to women’s!

I usually go to an amazing gender neutral barbers that's a social enterprise - you pay what you can afford, and choose the duration you want for your appointment.

I usually pay the average hourly rate that they publicise from time to time, but will probably be upping it a bit when I return

Sadly they're not open yet, and won't be until I'm away on holiday, so my first haircut will be at another hairdressers because I'd like it cut before I go away next week.
